Language / Accent marks in Polish language [22]

thanks. That's the one I have, where I can't find the majority of Polish special letters. missing.
Where is the s, c with the thing on top, or a, e with the thing on the bottom... etc?

How do I find the codes for those: ĄąĆćĘę£łŃńÓóŚś-źŻż?

Life / What should I name my female child? [44]

Don't do Flow! It's a euphimism for woman's period.
In the old Polish tradition, pick a name that has a patron saint. I'm not that religious, but that's kinda quaint. On the day of her birth check out the Polish calendar to see if the name of a female patron saint for that day is not totally hideous. You might be in luck.

Life / Do Poles Lack in Social Skills and Etiquette? [74]

Some people prefer to hang out with family and friends at their own home, rather than pay through the nose to be among strangers, and wait among the 'great unwashed'..

Some people spend so much time and effort on their home, that they would like to enjoy it during the precious time they're not traveling or working.

Some people's homes (like mine!) are more desirable places to go to than any club. Being a member of tight-knit group of friends is much more fun in private, rather than public place.

And who still goes to the movies?!? That's just silly.

Love / Are Polish women too controlling? [106]

I know a few controlling Polish women, but they got that way because they are dealing with alcoholic men on daily bases.

Life / Consider going back to Poland? [90]

I would love to go back to Poland, but, I'm ashamed to admit, I cannot give up the warm Florida weather. It's that simple. I prefer Polish people to Americans on almost every level, but every time I go north, the weather depresses the sh!t out of me.

News / British ambassador to Poland accused of "ignorance" for supporting gay rights [70]

This whole thread is hilarious! Gives some credence to that "50 years behind West" discussion.
Costantine, wondering if your priest is top or bottom has nothing to do with him being gay or straight, but it does say something about you. Shame, shame, shame.

And, gnaw each other! LOL!

Life / Consider going back to Poland? [90]

One of the things I miss the most is Polish hospitality. Sure I have many friends here, but God forbid I inadvertently show up during their dinner time! In Poland, it's almost better to visit then, save the hostess having to drag all the food back to the table. Is it still like that?

Food / Hello! Need help with a Polish recipe (quick, and easy to prepare) [8]

I would try to think of something cold, first course...
How about : a big Polish ham, sliced, ćwikla for condiment (grated beets with horseradish, basically), some rye bread, butter and ... vodka, of course.
I love my mother's potato/vegetable salad: cooked carrots, eggs, cooked potatos, peas, apples, onion, who knows what else... all sliced into little cubes, then mixed with mayo, mustard, little lemon, salt, papper and ... vodka, of course.

Makoviec is always a big hit for me, especially after I tell my guests after they eat it that they will probably fail their pi$$ test if called to take one. It's a dessert roll with dough and thick poppyseed paste.

Then there is Polish sushi - marinated herring (sledzie), Polish style, with vinegar, not wine, and ... vodka, of course.
Seriously though, stuffed cabbage would not be too bad. Pierogi, for 30 people would be madness.
Or borszcz - a big bowl of beet soup?

Food / Hello! Need help with a Polish recipe (quick, and easy to prepare) [8]

That is a great idea! it is a bit time consuming because you have to make sure the potatoes are fully cooked, but entirely doable. Also, grating potatoes for minimum 30 pancakes - food processor is a must. But, I would not use onion powder. Grate one real onion for every 5 or 6 potatoes. I don't even use flour. Just an egg to bind it a little, but either one will work. Garlic is optional as well.

Mmm... I want some!

I just read your reply... no heat.

Do you have Publix supermarket in your neck of the woods? Call around and ask if they have Krakus Polish ham. It's in a huge can, about $30. One of the popular appetizers in Poland is a plate of cold cuts, bread, butter, condiments. Add some head cheese (it's not cheese, it's called polędwica), above mentioned ćwikla, mustard, bread butter..

For 20% grade, she would have to have some good stories to go with it...
Or, if she wants to make it a bit humorous, just boil a bunch of potatoes, and sprinkle them with bacon bits - that was a very popular dinner during the communist times, when meat was very hard to come by. Plain thin yogurt to drink... I forget what they call it here..

oh, and sliced polish sausage on the cold cuts plate, of course. If you can find a Polish store, they'll probably have some kabanosy - thin dried smoked sausage.

Real Estate / 15 reasons why the Polish real estate market will crash soon [258]

I also believe that the prices of real estate will fall, signifficantly, in next 3-5 years. I was reluctant to say anything because I didn't want a fight, or waste time with endless googling for the numbers and statistics... I know you guys can burry me with your facts, while I mostly have just a gut feeling and PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder). The prices went up too fast, too much, and I don't think the economy is as good as all the Polish publications I'm getting would like me to believe.

I weathered my own real estate crash pretty well here, in both Florida and in Caribbean where I own properties, probably because I am not that couragious, but I remember people calling me a fool for not taking all my equity out and reinvesting. When I would ask them what will happen if the prices go down, they would get mad, even though they could not themselves believe how much people were willing to pay.

Now, that is just my opinion, and as much as I would like to look for something to buy in Poland right now, I'll just wait a couple of years.

Real Estate / 15 reasons why the Polish real estate market will crash soon [258]

In Florida, the whole housing bubble was a crazy ride. At one time, the value of my house quadrupled, and even though I wished I sold, the reality is that I would have turned around and invested in something even more expensive and be in deep sht now. As it is, the house is still worth twice what I paid for it 10 years ago, but only because it is close to the beach.

The Caribbean property (a little lot with million dollar views) is on Eleuthera. It gives us the excuse to visit every year (the best island in the world, IMHO), prestige of island property owners and an incentive (I hoped) for my son to learn how to build a freaking hut. Ha!

The summer, especially August, is pure hell both in Florida and on Eleuthera, that's why I started looking around for something with the cooler weather for summer months. Plus, I'm getting somewhat nostalgic for Poland. I guess I have to make the trip there again soon, that will probably cure me. I don't think I can move back permanently since I hate cold weather, but maybe spending summers there is a possibility.

Real Estate / 15 reasons why the Polish real estate market will crash soon [258]

I don't have 15 reasons , but here is one: I can imagine a scenario where the masses decide that that buying a house or a piece of land is not a good idea (call me paranoid), then the market will crash. I think it's that fickle. It doesn't matter how good of a deal you got if nobody's buying.

USA, Canada / Renewing Polish Passport in US [30]

I renewed my passport this year. I contacted them by e-mail. I was told I'll have to travel to Washington, but then I got lucky: Embassy scheduled couple of trips for their consul to set up meetings in a Polish Center around Tampa. I made an appointment, traveled couple of hours, no lines, no wait, met a chatted with the young Polish council and voila! passport arrived in the mail 4 months later. European Union right on the cover! Worth it.

News / HUMANE TREATMENT FOR CHRISTMAS CARP in POLAND [55]

There is a somewhat embarrassing carp-killing story I told my coworkers one time, and now I have to repeat it every year. Short of it was that one year my father decided to take a more active role in family Christmas preparations and offered to kill the carp. Before my mother knew what was happening, my father charged into the bathroom with the shotgun and blew the carp away. Literally. He was lucky he didn't get hit by the ricochet off the steal bathtub. Needles to say, it took forever to get all the pellets out of the fish. The end.

News / HUMANE TREATMENT FOR CHRISTMAS CARP in POLAND [55]

Yup. In US it is illegal to stock carp even in your own, private pond.
Koi, which is in the same family (I think), is OK, but who wants to eat koi??
Seriously though, Polish carp is not a garbage fish like an American carp, I've been told. Szlachetny.

Nope, he does not drink at all. He is a "scientist". ;)

USA, Canada / Deportation back to Poland for DUI [4]

I have heard that permanent residents are getting deported back to Poland for DUI. My question is, does anyone know of an actual case of somebody getting deported that did not have a previous record or any other charges besides that first DUI? I know that where I live, a DUI is a second degree misdemeanor. Do people get deported for misdemeanors? What are the rules for deportation, anyway?

USA, Canada / Deportation back to Poland for DUI [4]

That's what I thought. Family in Chicago is telling me horror stories of emmigrants getting deported for single DUI, people that have left when they were children, having no family left in Poland or knowledge of language. I had a hard time believing it.

I guessed that they don't like to disclose the full criminal record or complete list of charges.
