Food / Polish food is making me fat [49]

Hmmm. I always end up eating more in PL, but I lose weight while I'm there:) I think it has to do with being active.

Life / Anti-spanking law in Poland? [76]

1. They teach it violence.
2. They destroy the absolute certainty of being loved that the baby needs.
3. They cause anxiety: the expectancy of the next attack.
4. They convey a lie: they pretend to be educational, but parents actually use them to vent their anger; when they strike, it's because, as children, they were struck themselves.
5. They provoke anger and a desire for revenge, which remain repressed, only to be expressed much later.
6. They program the child to accept illogical arguments (I'm hurting you for your own good) that stay stored up in their body.
7. They destroy sensitivity and compassion for others and for oneself, and hence limit the capacity to gain insight.

I don't agree with any of this. I was diciplined (not beaten) when I was a child and I grew up just fine. I'm not violent nor do i look for revenge. I'm a sensitive man with a respect for others. You also mention baby. I don't think many people hit their babies. Now this is sth that I don't condone. Just my opinion.

USA, Canada / POLISH AMERICANS AND THE 2008 US ELECTION [79]

It's the TV that I don't watch much of. I watch the debates and speeches. McCain has been right beside Bush during the "crusade on trerror" and stands by his policies. He also has the motive to again disrupt the middle east and find every way possible to wage war against Iran. "the most dangerous regime"....right. They will both continue neglect our relations with other powerful countries (CH-RU)to focus on a small desert wasteland which has little hope of becomming entirely democratic.

USA, Canada / I might be moving to Florida.... [36]

yes, but how about the costs of living?

Florida's cost of living is rediculously low. Unfortunately the salaries are the same. I live in one of the most expensive areas in the US, and I'm dying to relocate. I'm hoping to be able to take my salary with me.

Florida is awesome. I used to live in Live Oak which is in the middle of nowhere on the Suwannee River. It's a great place if you like to:

Fish, golf, eat seafood, shelling, chill on the beach, get aggrivated at the old folk, hunt, get chased down by wild boar, catch an armadillo, drive on grated roads, deal with high winds, party with the spring breakers, windsurf, kite board, water ski, swim with manatee, swim with sharks/ dolphin, catch alligator, bbq, be eaten to death by skeeters, find points (arrowheads), watch cubans fresh off the boat run through the streets, thong watch in Miami ( a little sth for everyone), visit Disney, party on pleasure island, suck down raw oysters (mniammmm), etc.

You'll have fun :)

Food / COFFEE BRANDS IN POLAND & ELSEWHERE? [17]

I've noticed there's a lot of instant coffee drinking and Jakobs seems to be pretty popular.

My favorite is El Injerto, but I'm not sure if you can get this in PL.

USA, Canada / Gas prices in America [127]

USA, Canada / Gas prices in America [127]

I'm sure you all know some of the reasons gas is so expensive:

Dubai 1990
Dubai 2003
Dubai 2007

Dubai is said to currently have 15-25% of all the world's cranes.

Gas rationing in the 80's worked even though we grumbled about it.
It might even be good for us! The Saudis are boycotting American
goods. We should return the favor.

An interesting thought is to boycott their GAS.

Every time you fill up the car, you can avoid putting more money
into the coffers of Saudi Arabia . Just buy from gas companies that
don't import their oil from the Saudis.

Nothing is more frustrating than the feeling that every time I
fill-up the tank, I am sending my money to people who fund people that are trying to kill me, my family, and my friends.

I thought it might be interesting for you to know which oil
companies are the best to buy gas from and which major companies
import Middle Eastern oil.

Life / The strangest things in Poland [468]

- supermarket shoping is better here, because you can actually put the car on the parking, and after shopping reach you car with "truck"? . In USA you can`t go with shop truck on the parking.

I'm not sure I understand. Are you referring to the trolley? In the US, you can walk your trolley home if you wish :) There's never a problem with taking it into the parking lot. It's the whole point of a trolley. Maybe I misunderstood you though.

- in Poland you don`t have to tell shop seller that you wanna use Fitting rooms and get "special key".. you just get staff and go there

In boutiques you have to do this, most department stores have open rooms in the back...similar to stores in PL malls ie. H&M

- MacDonald is better (Chessburger taste much better)

Crappy beef is crappy beef no matter what country you're in :)

Life / Well You visited and/or lived in Poland, tell us what its like. [41]

I think someone from a southern state iin the united states would have a harder time with the not so friendly folks, but I dont believe its them not being friendly, I think its more of a cautious/keep your guard up thing.. because
someone in New York has a better chance at being robbed vs someone who
lives in the woods and same in Poland only probably it doesnt matter because
they have more country, small towns so they are just cautious..

I can see this possibly being true being as I haven't had any issues in PL yet except for maybe a few drunken street encounters :)

People are not friendly towards a foreigner and generally leave you to your self.

Fortunately, I've never had this issue. I was always welcomed and treated well, even by strangers.

Medical care is way behind even a place like India.

Again...fortunately, I've never had a problem with this either. I had prompt ambulance service and treatments during the following week were hassle free and very inexpensive.

It may also have sth to do with the city. I primarily travel to Poznan, but even when travelling somewhere I don't have any issues....except for the fact that many of Polands older generation don't speak English, no problem there that why I study Polish :)

News / Eurovision Song Contest: Isis Gee to represent Poland [156]

I just watched Eurovision for the first time and I have to ask, is this a serious contest? I would be embarassed by some of these poeple representing my country if it was serious. Until then, I can assume it's a comedy thing? Nothing like the already embarassing American Idol :) 1 second you're an idiot and the next you have a multi million dollar record deal.

Life / The strangest things in Poland [468]

Last time I was visiting the Baltic coast I've decided to take a bike ride along the coast to Sarbinowo. I rode the bike with no shirt on because it was hot as hell. I travelled through a short wooded area to the town and onto the path along the beach. I noticed that I was itching all over and it was starting to freak me out, so I look down at my chest and notice that I'm covered with thousands of little flies/larvae looking things and they were biting the hell out of me. They're called Meszki . They should be around now in some areas. I'd recommend trying to steer clear of these little devils.

Love / Why english men like polish women ? [126]

We have people from all over in these forums. We're here to discuss topics, not point out everyones grammar errors. If you'd like to teach and give pointers to native Poles, maybe you can create a 'proper English' grammar thread. Until then, leave people alone if they aren't perfect.

USA, Canada / New York trip suggestions [56]

Miranda

I'm pleased that you found NY friendly and had a good time. Most people don't understand un til they get here. We're stereotypically rude and arrogant :) Most places that you go to in NY have outstanding customer service. I hope you were able to take some good pictures.

Life / Shopping for Polish brands/labels [8]

Are there any good outlet malls/stores in Poland that have some of the Polish brand stores (Reserved, CROPP, etc.)

Yes, as B woo states, these stores are in most malls. Crop town and Reserved are in just about every decent sized mall.
