News / Should Poland send volunteers to Georgia ? [100]

Why does someone always mention Kosovo in these kinds of discussions?

Because the present conflict in georgia is very similar to what happened in kosovo!

USA, Canada / Citizenship for Lwow [3]

You'll definetly need some documents.

I suggest you start with your birth certificate. Birth certificate's have the names of the child's parents so maybe you can look into your parent's history and their parents' history etc for a link to "polish blood." Try contacting the church or maybe look into getting some help from a genealogist. Remember, you only have to prove that at least one of your grandparents was a polish citizen.

Edit: Wow polish-lith state?? That's like an american asking for british citizenship. Good luck.

Life / Which area in Wroclaw (Krzyki, Psie Pole, Fabryczna, Srodmiescie..)? [5]

There is no shortage of flats in wroclaw so i suggest you find yourself a place close to the rynek (marketplace) for convenience. Unfortunately as a foreigner you'll be subject to higher rent so it may be beneficial for you to find a Pole (seems like your g/f is polish) to "do the talking" when looking for a place to live. My aunt rents a very nice 1 bedroom flat in a fairly new building near the tesco on ul. dluga (~15min walk NW from the rynek) and charges only 600zl (soon to be 800zl).

Life / Applying for EU passport... [51]

i hope to be in poland very soon-dad was born in chelmno i dont have a copy of his birth certificate-do i go through the embassy here or best to go to poland?

When I lost my birth certificate I just sent a letter to the church where i was baptised with $20 asking for a new certificate. It came in the mail the following week:) Mind you this was some 5-6 years ago, maybe things have changed since then. You could try the same.

Life / Applying for EU passport... [51]

Is Polish citezenship equivalent to having a Polish (or EU) passport? I'm confused about the advice.......

Yes it is. See below.

You must prove citizenship before you can get a passport. To prove citizenship you must get your residency.

Your bf's mother is still polish even after her passport expires. If your US passport expires, do you lose your american citizenship?? She only needs to go the embassy with the expired passport and some ID in order to get a new one.

People, it is very simple: You are Polish if your parents are Polish.

If you were born in poland or outside of poland to Polish parents, you automatically qualify for a polish passport because you ARE POLISH. The Polish government considers such people as Polish citizens. Just bring proof of your parents' Polish citizenship and basically all possible ID documentation you and your parents have (you never know they'll want - polish bureaucracy is nuts) to a polish embassy/consulate and within 6 months you will get your passport. Actually, you may even qualify for a polish passort if only one of your grandaparents is/was polish, but i'm not 100% sure about this last part. However, if your parents renounced their polish citizenship then you're out of luck.

I (born in PL) had no problems getting my Polish passport nor did my canadian born siblings.

As for work, you'll need the Polish equivalent to a SIN # (sorry i forget what it's called) which i believe comes with your "dowod osobisty"...

I was charching some 20 $ / hour for Math so you can double for German now
I think.

What?? Learning German as a second language is no longer popular in poland. My aunt is a german teacher and every year she finds it more and more difficult to find students looking for german lessons. English is number 1, followed by Russian.

Polonia / German nation - degradation or just deviation? Your opinions? [66]

These crimes can happen anywhere. Fritzl's crime went on for 24 years, and who knows there could be other underground chamber's holding people like Fritzl did.

However, Fritzl did burn one of his "kids" in an oven. That got my mind to wander a bit. *cough* ww2 death camps *cough*

UK, Ireland / The Independent about Poles in the UK: "Poles are under attack." [83]

Britain should deport the ~2 million poles who migrated to the UK after Poland's entry into the EU. Then, since your government has decided that the UK needs immigrants, they should immediately replace the poles with 2 million pakis.

I wonder who the Brits would prefer...

Travel / TAXI FARE BETWEEN WARSAW AIRPORT AND OLD TOWN ? [16]

My cousin and I paid ~50zl (together) for a taxi from "praga south" to the airport. I don't remember exactly where in that part of town we were coming from but it was probably 2-4km east of the river. Your fare should be less than that.

News / Peres: Poland one of Israel's greatest EU allies [30]

Most of Polish people don't see it in this way.

I know very well that most poles don't think this way. Fortunately the government doesn't have the same medieval mentality.

Of couse you are Canada citizen ...

I am! However, I also have Polish citizenship:)
Although I don't live in Poland, I do have family there whom I keep in touch with and visit often, so I have a pretty good idea of what poles think.

News / Wojtek Cejrowski gives up his Polish citizenship! [19]

This is sad how unattractive Poland (and Europe) is for people who has some clue.

So life in Ecudaor is better than the EU? Why don't you move there than?

EUCCP? Wow, I don't even know what to say.

News / Peres: Poland one of Israel's greatest EU allies [30]

And Poland benefits from this how?????

It's just good to be friends with the jews. Afterall, they hold many prominent and powerful positions all over the globe. Maybe this friendship will result in more economic investments from israel and help the overall ecomomic situation in poland. And yes, as previously stated, they will no longer label Poles as anti-semetic. :)

Most of the Zionist political movements were founded in Poland, said Peres. In the first Knesset that was elected during the War of Independence, 61 of 120 members were of Polish origin, and in the first interim government headed by Ben-Gurion, six of 13 ministers were of Polish birth.

Yes and the most common language (maybe even official) in parliament was Polish. Sorry no sources; i remember reading it in a book sometime ago.

UK, Ireland / Life in the UK for some Poles (sad article) [124]

Ok, i have some questions for the ladies on this forum who are completely against abortion. Let's say you just got raped. Would you actually keep the baby??? If so, why? Morals? Would you ever tell your child in the future?

UK, Ireland / Life in the UK for some Poles (sad article) [124]

ahh,boo fookin hoo....what about the hardships of people actaully born here? If its so hard,go home and stop p issing and moaning. Thats one thing the Poles and Brits have in comen. Its a national pass time to moan and complain but we also both cant stand other people who moan and complain.

Nobody is complaining, they're just talking about the situation in the UK. When poland joined the UK some polish journalists followed the lives of migrants working in the UK. People are curious.

Maybe they should have been more careful.

Sex education in poland is, pardon my language, P.I.S.S. POOR. From what i see girls (and guys) don't know much about "safe sex" and are probably not aware of how STDs are spread. They're never taught about contraceptives in schools and the topic is taboo at home. Well, it is a catholic country. There's a similar problem in the USA where they teach "abstinence."

But maybe, like the article speculates, polish women from poland are coming to the UK to have this done as it is legal and free in the UK (thanks to tax payers like NO IMMIGRATION :) )

I am sorry to say this, as I am Polish myself and feel embarrassed by the truth, but this article talks not about "hardships" Poles go through, but describes the utmost stupidity of those who won't even register at a GP "because they can't speak (the language)" and then go on to buy some disgusting mixture of herbs (?) from a suspicious individual to abort a child that was conceived by accident, even though Family Planning Clinics hand out free contraceptives and Polish interpreters are readily available

I understand the way you feel. As i wrote above, i think it's all about the lack of sex-ed in poland (well stupidity too). People in poland still believe in the "save it until marriage" concept. Our world has become highly sexualized and this is quickly dieing out.

@ polishcanuck:
I'm not that good with Polish yet i'm afraid, is there an English version of that site? or a translation somewhere i could read perhaps?

No sorry, as far as i know it's only available on gazeta.pl. Maybe you could try an online translator.

ps admin, why do you like to change the topic titles? Bored?

UK, Ireland / Life in the UK for some Poles (sad article) [124]

kobieta.gazeta.pl/wysokie-obcasy/1,53662,5072871.html

Sad article. It talks about the hardships poles go through in the UK and most shocking, 10k polish women in the UK get abortions. It's possible that they go the UK to have it done because it's illegal in poland.

History / What Happened in the Danzig Corridor 1939? Poles Slaughtering Germans? [133]

Kraut, poland was the victim in ww2 and "slaughters" are quite common in war. Exterminations of ethnic groups, like the one your grandfather participated in, on the other hand, are not normal. Go read some non-nazi books.

Educate yourself, kraut, visit this url: www . auschwitz . org . pl , also google nurnberg trials.

Life / Dogs and taxes in Poland - who is responsible? [7]

In canada there are no taxes for dogs. I take my dog to get rabies shots, but i don't think that's a law. Also dogs have to be on a leash and muzzled if they're aggressive so you don't get savagely attacked by a lawyer in case your dog bites someone. You have to pick up your dogs shite as many cities have bylaws for that - it's also respectful. If only poles would do this...

Pitbulls are banned in my province.

News / Earth Hour - possible in Poland? [62]

Did everyone here participate in earth hour?
Personally i don't understand the concept. Why don't we have a no-SUV day? Or take public transportation to work day? Or carpool day? Do the organizers of this event actually think that people will start conserving energy? No way! We're living in a "i want/need everything" society. Why don't we focus on pressuring our governments into building more clean energy power plants like nuclear, wind, fusion etc. What about green cars? My province recently shutdown a couple of coal power plants and are in talks to build a new nuclear plant. 80% of Frances energy comes from nuclear plants!

I boycotted the event and left all the lights on in my house (and i'm always keep the lights off or to a minimum).

Life / When to greet strangers in Poland or not.. [30]

In Poland, it's also customary to say "dzien dobry" to strangers when you're hiking in the mountains. Also i've noticed that people greet strangers/friends in this way in small villages.

But getting back to your question, i would think that poles don't say dzien dobry in the streets simply because there are too many people. Can you imagine saying hi to everyone you come across in a rynek? It's just impractical.

a bunch of blokes on their lunch break are standing on the street having a fag and say good morning to me when i'm walking o work.

Maybe they think you're attractive ... :)

Travel / Will my rented car be stolen or broken into when in Poland? [24]

Just find yourself a "parking strzezony" (guarded parking as you say) and you'll be fine. That's what i did in the past - it wasnt too expensive. When you do rent the car, make sure it's not fully loaded and it will be helpful if the radio is removable. Car thefts in poland have gone down in recent years, but it still happens.

Personally i prefer public transport. With the lack of highways and adequate roads in poland, it's often faster or just as fast to take the train/bus/taxi. It's dirt cheap too.
