Language / 'w' - difference between accusative+locative [18]

How exactly do you pronounce "w" though? Is it similiar to how you would pronounce "w" the letter in lower case of the english alphabet?

"w" is pronounced more like "v" in Violet or Victor

News / A Pole to start the HIV AIDS epidemic? [52]

"However, studies have failed to find evidence of AIDS in millions of other people who received these vaccines. Samples of the vaccine have tested negative for HIV. The HIV strain identified in those early African cases is now classified as belonging to group M; the strain that came from Haiti to the United States during the late 1960's, and later became the most common strain in the world, is known as subtype B. The two are not closely related. Scientists also say that the virus carried by chimpanzees in trial sites does not resemble HIV. (For more on the non-linked facts, I recommend reading "The Hunt for the Origin of AIDS," published in The Atlantic in October 2000.)"

Life / Polish dentists - good and cheap? [84]

It is interesting that you say 'stick with her answer' yet interestingly she is in England and is not in Poland at all. .....

Still, she knows more about Poland than you do. JustysiaS may not remember well, or at all, how it was in Poland during the 70-80’s, but unfortunately for you I do.

UK, Ireland / If I was to move to Poland from Ireland... [92]

Polish women are very hard indeed and know exactly what they want in life. .........................
If you are like me, i.e.weak

That explains everything.

Life / Polish dentists - good and cheap? [84]

Is that true of all Polish patients then?

must be only true in your case because it is a standard procedure to have an injection prior to any treatment that will involve pain.

Stick with JustysiaS's answer....

One word of warning if you go to a Polish dentist, they do not have injections to numb the pain.

Its easy to explain why. No dentist will ever use a pain killer when they figure out that they have an a**hole for a patient.

UK, Ireland / British Airways cancels Heathrow to Warsaw flights ! [23]

And that’s why you did not recommend using LOT?
If you have done your research you would know that Russian aircrafts are not used by LOT for awhile now, and that overall safety record of Polish Airlines is very good.

Besides, most people interested in Poland ask questions about present situation in the country and not how it was in 1980's, so your answers are at least misleading.

If you must respond, at least have the decency to start you sentences with: When I visited Poland in 1986....

UK, Ireland / British Airways cancels Heathrow to Warsaw flights ! [23]

have heard that LOT flights as well as the food is supposed to be better than on British Airways flights anyway. I am not so sure about flying from America to Poland via a LOT plane. Many years ago I was in Gdansk when a Polish LOT flight was coming in to Warsaw when it simply blew up and destroyed two kilometers of forest in its path. Not to be recommended!

Michal, all your statements about Poland are based on the past. Please make yourself a favour, stop living in 1980's! Things can change in over 20 years....

Food / Polish Spirytus Recipes [14]

1 kg cherries (3/4 kg pitted and ¼kg not)
½kg - 1 kg sugar
1L spirytus

Place cherries in a jar and add spirytus. Close the jar and leave it for 2-3 months.
Transfer the liquid (A) to another jar and close it. The remaining cherries cover with sugar and leave for 2-3 months. After this time separate the juice (B) from cherries.

Combine liquids A and B, preferably in one jar. Taste it. If too strong add water (boiled and cooled down to room temp). To make the liquor clear you may want to filter it. Transfer to bottles and you are done.

You can replace cherries with black currant (I highly recommend).

Life / Arriving Gniew - Few Questions [5]

Gniew is a small town. The history of it you can find on Wikipedia.
The website for Gniew is:
gniew.pl
I did check it out and unfortunately its in Polish only. There is 15 restaurants, so you should have plenty of opportunities to eat out. I am sure that there are supermarkets and medical facilities as well.

There is a number of bigger cities around Gniew, like Pelplin, Starogard Gdanski, Tczew and (approx. 1-1.5 hour by train) TriCity (Gdansk, Sopot, Gdynia)

Language / Can anyone help with spelling of Grandmother [53]

Babcia, Babunia and Babusia are commonly used in Poland
It is common in North America to make names shorter. So Busia is simply a shorter version of Babusia

Genealogy / Rostki - Rostkach [4]

Does this mean born in Rostki, Province of Bialystok

Yes it does.

I imagine you want (or need) to write to “Urząd Stanu Cywilnego w £omży”. If so, it should be like this:

Urząd Stanu Cywilnego w £omży
xx-xxx £omża
Województwo białostockie
Poland

where xx-xxx stands for postal code (have no idea what it is though)

Ok, found it. The full address is:
