Love / Eastern European Girls Common Characteristics [40]

Money is like fire or water. If there is too much, you lose control over it and then it controls you.
Finding and Loving This One and Only person in life, your "True Love" is the most important reason to live. But you have to find him or her.

If you make money your first priority in life, you loose. Money is very important in life, but you cannot make it your "God". It does bring happiness, and it's not the root of all evil. It all depends on your ability to control it.

Life / How to Survive on a Minimum Wage in Poland? [45]

My aunt, cousins and other family members live in Warsaw. I used to live in Żoliborz. I was just there with a visit and couldn't believe the prices they were asking for rental units! That's how much they pay in the US to rent! With the Polish wages, I don't know who can afford it. But some must have good jobs.

The restaurants I found cheaper than in the US.
But for example, you order steak. In Poland the menu quotes you one price and then when the bill comes, it's higher. Because they charge you not by the steak order, but by how much it weighs.

And they still charge for using the toilets. I guess the old "babas" need to make money somehow too...

Love / Eastern European Girls Common Characteristics [40]

Somebody I know went to Poland to meet a girl and since he was from the US, she was only after his money.
Some girls are like that, and in the US it's the same thing. They look for the wrong thing in a man. They want the guy to be rich, good-looking and that's not what happiness is all about. It sure helps to have money, but that shouldn't be the number one reason to be with somebody. True love speaks from your heart. A person may be poor and ugly but when you love him, it doesn't bother you.

You can still find girls in Poland that don't think like that. Keep looking!

Language / expressing the present tense - grammar question [20]

Brat in America is
a). a spoiled rotten kid or
b). A type of a big, fat hot-dog.
It's pronounced differently. But since you don't have brats where you come from, I will disregard this.

OK. The polish word: Spotkam - meet
I am meeting - Ja się spotykam
I will be meeting - Ja się spotkam
I will meet somebody - Ja spotkam kogoś
I will meet with.. - ja się spotkam z...

Language / expressing the present tense - grammar question [20]

plg, the easy thing in the Polish language is that how you see it, that's how you say it.
When I teach English to Poles, they have a hard time reading because they tend to read it how they see it.
Ex: "Brat" sometimes it's pronounced "brat" other times "brot". try to explain the difference to them.
"Read" is the same as present and passed.
"to" and "too"
and the list goes on and on.... If you mastered English, Polish should be easy..(hahahaha)

Language / expressing the present tense - grammar question [20]

Playing - bawię się - (as in playing with a toy or yourself,)
Playing the piano - gram na pianinie
Playing with the piano - bawię się pianinem
Playing on top of the piano - bawię się na pianinie

Got it? Good. I'm glad you're not confused anymore.

UK, Ireland / Another Polish Girl Dead in Glasgow [17]

Once they get to know you, they are very friendly to you. They don't like the outsiders because they want to keep away from the outside world. They don't believe in electricity, don't have TV's, radios, running water, cars etc. But some are slowly accepting the outside world because they need help from "outsiders" to give them a ride to a store or hospital. The women make beautiful quilts which they sell at auctions to make money.

I know a lot about the Amish because they're my friends and once they gave me a chicken.

UK, Ireland / Another Polish Girl Dead in Glasgow [17]

I know a lot of Amish people here in the US, and they are very nice, mild, agreeable, people. They don't believe in fights, wars, they just want to live in peace, in a non-violent world. The little girls that guy killed were shot execution style, right in the head. The 7-year old died today.

Small, innocent children, they didn't hurt anyone....

Language / expressing the present tense - grammar question [20]

Are you talking about just "playing" or playing an instrument?
Just "Playing":
Ja się bawię - cont. present
Ja się bawię - simple present
Ja się bawię - emph. present

Playing an instrument:
Ja gram
Ja gram
Ja gram
So as you can see, it's the same as in french.

Love / Dating a Polish girl - need some advice [45]

I think she better think what she's doing, because if she ever gets married to her bf, and doesn't love him, then I smell a divorce in the future.

But then again it's a hard decission for her to make, because she shares a house, a car and other expenses with him and she doesn't have to worry about that.

But, if there is no love, the relationship won't last.
Love is what holds everything together and sometimes it's worth it to be poor. And when you love that one person in your life, nothing else matters.

Does she really love you or is it just a passing thing?
Sometimes you have to wait, get to know each other better and things will work out.

Life / Poland: The Things That Make Foreigners Lift a Brow [123]

5. Lots of girls would wear clothes and use make up only prostitutes would in USA

I think they do use a little bit too much in Poland. There used to be a fad like that in America about 40 years ago, but now the use of make-up is so minimal, you look good but you cannot tell you're wearing it. that's the trick.

Life / Cigarette Smoking in Poland [146]

I take it you don't smoke, Anja?

I don't either.
Most restaurants in America ban smoking, some still have a smoking or non-smoking section. I remember when flying, they would ask you if you want smoking or non-smoking seats. In the 60's there were all kinds of commercials advertising cigs., but now there aren't any. I used to go play Bingo in church about 10 years ago, and everybody smoked. Mostly old ladies. And the room was packed, didn't win much. Now they banned smoking, and there are less people and the chances of winning are better. (But I don't go anyway, I have more fun on this forum).

So things are changing, but will that stop smokers??????
