History / Polish Constitution Day on May 3rd [14]

Ah memories of Glastonbury Festival....

I spent three weekends at gigs last year and it pi$$ed down at each of them.

By the way. Whoever is playing across the road sound good. If I don't like the music I just close the window.

Never been to Glastonbury, I'm a Knebworth man.

You KNOW how much I LOVE them!

I'll wave to them, and that wave will be from you, OK.

I saw them last year and it rained so much that some people left early. I was hiding under an umbrella with about six other blokes. Don't you just love open-air gigs.

History / Polish Constitution Day on May 3rd [14]

Not sure who's playing. It might be Kult or Dzem or Hey. I'm really not sure.

I'll be seeing Myslovitz tomorrow.

I'm at home because the family are out. Someone has to mind the dogs.

Feedback / how can i log out??? [19]

Admin,

OK. I just thought that it might be one or two clicks quicker, that's all.

Yes, in this part it would be quicker - but on the other hand logging in takes more time (plus remembering the password :). Admin

News / A friend murdered in Poland; what the Polish police can do? [69]

I've noticed that people in Poznan are a lot richer than those who live out in the countryside

This is normal for some areas of the country. It's a little different where new-builds are concerned.

Re: Murder.
You will find it very difficult to find a witness to a crime in Poland. Even in a crowded street.

Real Estate / Advice on what Polish city to invest in.... [101]

Wroclaw would be an excellent choice.

Be careful with Wroclaw. Because of EURO 2012 the shape of the city will change. New airport/larger airport, new stadium. It is already changing with new roads and shopping centres. For max profit do some research with someone who knows the city. A choice property now could be in the wrong location in the next five to ten years.

Language / Why don't you have only one past tense in English? [14]

It's all in the teaching.

There are two tenses: Present and Past.

The future is formed by using Present tenses. Example: I'm meeting John next week.

Think of Grammar this way:
Present.
Part A ..........Present Simple.
Part B...........Present Continuous.
etc.

Genealogy / Maludzinska [29]

Iremal,

If you look at the Genealogy threads you will see that they are not filled with cr*p about other subjects. If you want help. Stay on topic.

Real Estate / Foreigners: Please don't buy Polish Land! [823]

We have no idea if the locals really will get frustrated. However, at some point there is bound to be some problems. It's in the nature of some people to blame others for their problems and foreign folk will make an easy target. Maybe.

Real Estate / Foreigners: Please don't buy Polish Land! [823]

My two cents worth.

Buying property in a city is one thing, but buying up the countryside is another. Remember that most Polish people live in the country not cities and when foreign folk start buying up whole tracts of land someone is going to get a little pi$$ed off.

On the other hand there are strict building regulations being put in place to stop, for example, the building of mansions with swimming pools and other excessive designs.

If it doesn't fit the existing pattern/style it won't get built.

A major problem you face is resentment/envy and all that comes with it.

We will see.

Genealogy / Has anyone taken Genealogy DNA tests? [87]

Many people taking a DNA test might find an influence from an unexpected source, but it won't prove who your G-G-Grandparents were because you'd need their DNA for a match.

Another problem with Genealogy is that you can almost never prove who the father of a child is. I'm talking about in the past.

Genealogy for most people is a paper trail of what others said was true at the time.

If you take a DNA test you might find out too much too soon. It would be heartbreaking to find that someone as close as a parent or sibling is actually not related to you.

If you take the test. Make sure that they only give you the results which are relevant to your original question.

Life / Polish Girl Fashion - "less is more"? [108]

The first thing I check when meeting peopl for the first time is the watch and their shoes.

My gran told me years ago that the way to judge a person was by their footwear.

Not everyone wears a watch. They usually check the time on their mobile

Life / Polish Girl Fashion - "less is more"? [108]

miranda,

Maybe the problem is not what they wear, but what is available.

I was chatting to some young folk about fashion a couple of weeks ago. It was agreed that it would be a brave person who dared to be different. Something I found out about when I moved to Poland. I still get looks from people because I wear so many earrings.

Work / Non-Polish Speaker in Poland. Teaching sports? [13]

Jason,

If you are used to site work then look for something like shuttering/formwork. On the big sites the site-engineer should speak English and if you work with others and can read a plan you should be OK. Also, you will learn Polish relevant to the job.

On smaller jobs. Fitting windows....... you work in a team and like any other building work you speak during your breaks and to receive instructions.

Be brave. Go for it. [just keep an eye on your tools]

Life / Polish Girl Fashion - "less is more"? [108]

Earrings came into fashion here, for young men, about 15 yrs ago. They don't wear them now. But I do.
Highlights.... not a good idea here. And it wouldn't work anyway as most young men have very short hair.
Black socks........most socks come in plain colours. I wear grey or black. Coz that's whats in the local shop.
Polish people are generally useless when it comes to fashion. [maybe not a wise thing to say on here, but true nevertheless.]
