Love / do polish women make good wives as opposed to their western counter part? [29]

Did too much.
That's why he divorced me.

My mom is like that. So is wifey. She works too hard. I'm keeping her :)

I get ticked off when I am not allowed to do some of the housework (because supposedly "you don't know how to wash clothes in a washing machine"!). I'm only allowed to cook, wash the dishes and do the so called man stuff around the house.

Study / Polish Universities - are there any entrance exams? [6]

I guess for medicine is not that difficult to enter cause doctors in Poland make less money than lawyers, economists etc.

Things may have changed but in my time there was about 20 to 1 ratio of candidates vs. available spots, so it was very competetive. At that time doctors made even less, in relation to other professions.

History / Should Germany claim to be the victims in Poland? [510]

The other FACT is after the Poles startet to rule in Silesia they made the Germans leaving

It's not a fact. It's your perception.
Soviets made the rules and the western allies either sat silent or OK'ed it all. Poles were not the decision makers in their own country.

There lived once MILLIONS of Germans beside the Poles and in some regions they were the clear majority...where are they now?

Look for them in what is now Germany. Unlike millions of Poles, Jews, Russians and others they were not incinerated or burried in collective graves.

Love / Polish-Islam Relationship Union [450]

I think that you totally disagree with the statement that woman should belong to one man (her husband)

I totally disagree a human being should belong to anyone. In my cultrue a woman is a human being. A woman is not a dog, a goat, or a sheep. She is a human being. If a woman is not willing then man's dick belongs in his pants, and if he cannot control it the it should be cut off. People's limbs are cut off in your "culture" if they steal, aren't they? Instead of punishing women for being raped, as it is practiced in your ridiculous laws, the attackers should be severely punished.

I never had illusions that islam was a huggable movement, but until I read your posts I didn't realize how perverted it is. And you even try to rationalize and justify rape. Unfvckingbelievable!

Love / Polish-Islam Relationship Union [450]

Everything that females use (make up, earings, parfume etc) is just for ONE aim, to draw attention of men, although it's considered now in cocial aspects. Again - this is human nature, evolution needed that. But when you're try to do everything to get men's attention and finally is being chased by drunk machos - who your going to blame for that? They are just what they are - but women are responsible - 'cause seducing (even when you didn't intend doing that) is VERY awful thing - you shove the other one into this and that's what true muslim women is scared - open view of her legs could be the reason why the guy can find himself in a very bad situation one day. (and I'm not talking about bieng stoned to death).

So to Islamists, a woman puts a makeup and it's a signal to them she should be raped. And where the fvck is your allah to stop them from that? What kind of goat herding culture is that?

In a way your statements could be used to defend American insterest in ME oil: "You wrap your heads with towels and wear long dresses so you can't be serious and therefore we'll take your oil from you".

Appaling views, appaling religion for appaling men.

Travel / Is Wroclaw the best city in Poland? [30]

Wroclaw used to be considered the city that was most "enthusiastic" in the 1980's fight against communism. The enthusiasm was known well enough to have found its way into even JP II's speeches during his visits to Poland.

I left a lot of good memories there.

History / Roman Catholic Poland, how did this happen - why not Orthodox? [19]

during the reformation most Poles ended up Protestant, only to come back to Roman Catholicism after the Swedish invasions in the 17th century.

I don't think this is true.
There were protestants in Poland as Poland was probably the most culturally diverse country in Europe. All kinds of dissidents flocked to the country in various waves because of the lack of freedoms in their own, but they were never a force sufficient enough to justify the statement that "most Poles ended up Protestant" at any time in Poland's history.

As a matter of fact, the defence of Jasna Gora and its military and symbolic role in Poland's history may give you some clues.

The first king of Poland then used Christianity as a unifying element (first little link between religion and politics) to bring all the tribes together and make one strong nation – this was officially done in 966 with the Baptism of Poland

That is definitely true, although I'd argue that Poland's native (Slavic) religion could have been enough of a unifying force. As a matter of fact, Christianity was not welcomed by Poles with open arms, and as late as 15 century, in some areas of Poland they still had some basics to cover. Hugo Kollataj, when he received the parish of Krzyzanowice at the end of the 18th century, still complained about pagan customs and resistance to Christianity in the area which is a locaation of some of the oldest chirches in all of Poland. Surprisingly large number of even little villages have little historic treasures dating back to 12th century and before..

There remains another element that seemed of critical importance in the decision to accept Chrsitianity. The western lands were inhabited by Germanic tribes, which by then were Christian, just like much of Europe to the west and south of Poland. Christianity, by the 10th century became a power to recon with. Poland simply stood no chance against Germany (and the rest of Christian Europe ready to help them) in their quest to "legaly" conquer new lands to convert pagans. For the glory of god, of course. Mieszko was smart and did the right thing. Just look how Prussians did. They rejected christianity.

Mieszko was wise to consider neighboring German power. This was an important factor in selecting which nation Poland would turn to in order to recieve baptism. Politically, Czechs, as weaker and less aggressive towards Poland than Germans were a logical choice. That helped Poland find itself outside the formal dependence of the German church (and thus politics).

In a way, and very roughly, think about Poland's acceptance of Christianity as politically similar to Poland's membership in EU. End there was resistance and dissatisfaction with both :)

News / Polish-German Relations in the Present [697]

In saying this you somehow seem to know the personal beliefs and their allegiances of every parent who "got what they deserved".

I never wrote "every parent". Read my post again and debate my comments, not the comments you think are mine.

News / Polish-German Relations in the Present [697]

I'm talking about families (mostly women and children) that had to flee because they were on the wrong side of a border (any border) when their governments went to war. I can absolutely relate to the idea of having your life torn apart about by governments that don't really care about their people.

True that governments mostly don't care. But you need to remember that most Germans were happilly marching east to take over someone else's lands, gladly accepted slave workers from Poland, cattle, manufactured goods and the promise of the 1000 Year Reich.

Sure, some were in disagreement, but I can;t imagine that only a small group of Germans was all it took to support the biggest slaugher in human history.

The only true German vistims were small kids. The parents got what they desrved, and thus they are, in my mind, ultimately responsible fot the suffering of their own offspring.

News / Polish-German Relations in the Present [697]

That would be absurd. How can anyone say that one person's suffering is more or less meaningful than another person' suffering?

I think what we're comparing here is the suffering of a an attacker and that of his victim.

Think of it as feeling sorrow for either someone who was killed, or for his killer who broke his hand while killing his victim.

History / Should Germany claim to be the victims in Poland? [510]

So even today most Germans have a good idea (and the evidence) where they come from.
If they mixed with Poles, or Jews...or if they were "arisch".

You know that inbreeding is not good, don't you? :)

Language / List of Polish consonants [8]

so s and z are hard because they don't have one of the aove three influences?

true.
And also verify that the middle part of the tongue does not travel towards the hard palate as it is the case with ś or ź

Language / List of Polish consonants [8]

not sure if I'd call all of them soft consonats.
Softening is added by the influence of "i" sound. So of the list I'd say these are soft:

ć, dź, j, ń, ś, ź, dzi

However, in linguistics soft consonants in modern Polish are defined as those whose pronunciation requires the middle part of the tongue to be lifted towards the hard palate. Therefore, the list should be supplemented by: k', g', l' j

(apostrophe denotes softening of the consonnat by the "i" sound)

c, ch, cz,dz, dź, rz, sz are frontal, so they are not soft, but occurence of "i" following some them may produce a soft consonant (for instance chiński)

polish consonants?

Yup, final touches show zeal for mastery :)

These skyscrapers look intersting, but having watched Superbad last week I think some ideas from the movie would be great!
I'm sure tourism in Warsaw would skyrocket :)

word 'dziewka"

Two meanings I know about:

- a young girl who works as a servant for a farmer
- a morally unscrupulous woman. OK, a wh.ore :)

I'm unaware of the usage of the word in Polish that would mean "girl", although its diminutive form (dzieweczka) has no pejorative undertones and it means "young girl".

History / Zaolzie – The Polish – Czech conflict [9]

Annexation of Zaolzie by Poland is often described as a nearly barbaric act, opportunism and such and out of historic context. It wasn't barbaric. The number of victims was 0 (that's zero). It was opportunistic though.

The historic context is also imprtant. The area was first taken away from Poland by Czechs (1919 I believe). The takeover was hostile and opportunistic, as Poland was involved in a war in the East and all her forces were kinda busy at the time.

The takeover by the Czechs was illegal so the European big shots protested, as usual without any concrete steps to support the protest. In 1920 or 1921, Poland and Czechoslovakia agreed to hold a poll among the population of the territory in question to decide who's gonna rule Zaolzie. They poll never took place. Eventually, Poland did what Czechs had done to Poland some 20 years earlier.

So the bottom line for this conflict was simple: what goes around comes around.

Language / Polish Sentence With The Letter S Lots Of Times [13]

showing off to the chicks

popisuje sie laską z satysfakcją

This is where the problem is. You probably meant "laskom" which is plural (not laską), but the correct form is : "popisuje sie przed laskami".

"Popisuje sie laską" means that the chick (singular) the object of his pride.

6 Mill dead Poles later....good deal won't you agree?

If you consider the need Germans had for Turkish and Yugoslav workers because of shortage of men then the deal was mutual.

Hey! Aren't you perhaps half Turkish? Just a thought. You know, all those muslims in germany. You never know, eh?

History / Should Germany claim to be the victims in Poland? [510]

You know Poland didn't even exist for awhile...swarming with Germans...could very well be...

Lands all the way to Berlin were swarming with Slavs. Berlin itself isn't even a German name. Could it be that you are a closet Slav?

Where do you think the millions of people from you did expell came from???

Wrong address buddy. Write the complaints to comrade Stalin, Sir Winston Churchill and Mr Prez if the US of A. You may also file a complaint with the Nazi government for signing the agreement, and then a few subsequent German leaders for keeping it alive.

The next chapter in the city's colourful history began in 1741 when King Frederick the Great II seized Lower Silesia and brought it under Prussian rule. It was he who officially gave the city its German name of Breslau

An even more colorful times for Wroclaw began a couple of decades ago. Other areas regained form Germans experienced similar revival and return home. If you want a piece of those, you have to pay.

My grandparents did marry here...as Germans!

Oh well. People have to marry somewhere, don't they. Yours married in Poland.
Gotcha :)

USA, Canada / Americans who call themselves Polish - how do you feel about that? [112]

if you have Polish blood you're Polish. That's just the law. To me, you're truly Polish if you're born in Poland, other wise you're just an American with a Polish background.

My daughter was born in the US. We moved to Canada when she was 2. Both her parents are Poles, born in Poland. She speaks perfect Polish. She's active in Polish cultural events, clubs and such. The language at home is Polish. Strangely, by your definition she is American.

To me, a person who feels Polish is Polish.
