USA, Canada / Gas prices in America [127]

A LOT of people take public transportation particularly to go to work in Manhattan because there is heavy traffic and it takes like twice as long!!

True. I knew a whole bunch of people from Great Neck, L.I. The all took train to Manhattan. Hardly any bums among them if about the cheapest house in the village was about $500,000 in late 80's.

Love / HELP: Getting married in Poland not in a Catholic Church [12]

After getting married things will change and her good English will make it even harder for you to hold on to her when the time comes.

It looks like you need this sex dolls instead of a woman.

Eastern European people are very adaptable, that is one reason why they are such a scurdge on society wherever they go.

You can't judge all Eastern Europeans by your own behavior.

USA, Canada / Diffrence between the Usa and Canada [32]

An Studio Apt. is about $900(1BR), 1 room only would be like $600. There are always nice/decent studios in NYC, you must take your time searching for the best that fits your standards.

in the 212 area code and below 100th Street or so?

Language / Difference between Polish Ł and English W [23]

In most cases Polish £ sounds much like English W in water.
On occasion you will hear a different version of the sound, and that would be similar to English dark L in whole. That sounds seems to by vanishing in standard Polish. It is used mostly by older people all over Poland with their roots in Eastern Poland/Western Ukraine, or by some younger ones in the Eastern borders areas.

I wouldn't worry about the latter version.

USA, Canada / Diffrence between the Usa and Canada [32]

Truth is, you cant find anything under $700 (suburbs) NYC

I wrote NY State, not NYC.
In NYC I don't think you'll find anything worth looking at for under $2000K/mo

Study / Does Poland offer Polish Lessons for Free? [16]

In general, I am against any kind of free language lessons for immigrants. The country accepts a person, allows a new start, offers new opportunities. Isn't that enough?

USA, Canada / Diffrence between the Usa and Canada [32]

is it so easy to find a job like in nj or ny?

NY is a large State. You can get a 1BR apartment for anywhere from $400 to $4000 per month.

how about rent let say 1 bedroom apt how much it can cost(close to toronto)

In general Toronto is not a nice place too live unless you're awash in money. A decent 1BR apartment will start around $1000 per month. There is a very low vacancy rate (under 1%) so it a landlord's, not a renter's city.

I know already that alcochol is expensive(sucks:))

If you buy and drink enough alcohol you can get very affordable accommodation. Just make sure that in winter you set your card boxes over the subway vents, as it may get real chilly.

Life / Would this be viewed as okay for most Polish families? [38]

I DON'T LIVE AT HOME!!! Its called a dormroom u moron. U know when u go to a univ u live on campus to maximize study time? =)

That's a lie. If you were serious abiut your studies you wouldn't be posting some of the most idiotic comments on this forum.

Dude u can't talk ur a railway operator!!! wat a joke!!! =) talk to me when ur in a more highly esteemed profession!

He is making a living the way he can or wants. And that is admirable.
You on the other hand have no profession at all, and your intellectual level is certainly below that of the railway operator. You have a long way to go before you can catch up with Glim.

Language / What does "czy" mean? [37]

be careful not to mix up the Polish word czy and czyli meaning 'that is to say'.

Tricky, since in Polish there is "czy li" which would be prefectly OK to use in a question instead of "czy" alone. "czy li" is not the same as "czyli"

Love / For all the hot Polish guys out there [73]

But, well.. I guess everyone needs loving....

A rather more appropriate statement would be an old Polish adage:

kazda potwora znajdzie swego amatora

Life / Would this be viewed as okay for most Polish families? [38]

After WW2, living with parents in Poland (more often than not) had its reasons outside people's personalities. There simply weren't enough places to live on one's own. Whatever was available for rent was either way too expensive or too crappy to consider for a young family. Those who could afford it, or wighted pros and cons, lived on their own fairly soon. I moved out of my family home when I was 18 and change.

As for the fella described in the first post, he's just an a$$hole. I would have a problem seeing his behavior as a common trait among Polish males. Quite to the contrary, where I come from it is considered a shame for a man to be unable to maintain a family, or at least to equally contribute to its well being, daily duties and chores.

Language / Capital Letters at the start of Polish words. [26]

Polish and polish are pronounced differently. What other English word is pronounce differently when capitalized?

This has nothing to do with capitalization:

Polish those shoes using shoe polish.

These are homographs, words with the same spelling but different meaning and/or pronounciation. Some examples:

tear, console, minute, wind, present, contract, refuse, lead, sewer, number, desert, does, dove, produce.

Who do you think sat in the Sejm all these decades and made it possible? Russians???
Take the blinkers away...it wasn't marsians!

Wasn't the same true about GDR?

Or perhaps it didn;t really matter who sa t in this parliament or another, but rather how many Soviet troops were stationed around it?

USA, Canada / 2008 U.S. Presidential Election according to Polish and foreign people [90]

there is the issue of an extra-marital blowjob

What exactly is the problem with that? Are blow jobs or extra marital affairs illegal in the US?

$40 mil wasted investigating someone's sexual pleasures, while only $600K on 9/11 Commission. Go figure. Americans and their priorities.

USA, Canada / The 2nd Amendment (USA), the right to own guns [261]

The 2nd Amendment (USA), the right to own guns

There is no such ammendment in all of the American Constitution.
2nd ammendment allows people to bear arms. Nothing original. People had that right since time immemorial, and still do. Except some middle eastern cultures where they professed the rule of "eye for an eye, arm for an arm"

Language / What does "czy" mean? [37]

Polish "czy" is used when asking whether some thing will occur or not. There isn't a direct equivalent of the word in English since English uses syntax and (sometimes) auxilary words to construct questions, but some examples may explain this a little more.

Do you like sex? Czy lubisz seks?
Are you having dinner? Czy jesz obiad"
Is he taking a nap? Czy on drzemie?
Will it do? Czy to wystarczy?
Has he had dinner yet? Czy on juz zjadl obiad?

It should be also noted than questions starting with the word "czy" can be answered with Yes or No.

I really hate it when I see a man totally dominated by a bloody woman!

At least your wife goes to Poland once in a while so you can breathe a little easier at times.

UK, Ireland / Some EXAMPLES of salaries of Poles working and living in the UK. [49]

Today in Poland, it is very rare indeed to find man living so long.

You don't know todays Poland.

Sixty five is the max.

We already discussed it here and sources were quoted proving you wrong. Are all katsaps that thick skulled, or is it just you?

The smell is dreadful and God only knows what they are breathing in.

Seems like yesterday huh? But you left 20 yeras ago and your stench is long gone too.

but, that is an entirely different thing to discusing what you earn with others.

I have seen a lot of posts here by Brits teaching English in Poland. Didn't you?

Having said that, I must agree, Poles will discuss their sallaries and it pisses me off when some of them ask me how much I make, like it's any of their fvking business.

Love / I'm daying a Polish Guy and I wanna know... [55]

It is a well known fact that children from foreign families have a big disadvantage in school. End of story.

It is not a well know at all. All the research done in this regards is pretty much as valuable as arguning whose god is better and more powerful. In a word: useless.

My daughter is perfectly bilingual. Along with other perfectly bilingual kids from her class (mostly Spanish/English) she received over a dozen of full scholarship proposals from the best universities. These were not sports scholarship offers either. On the other hand, most native Canadian kids ended up in lower grade schools at best. More than a few landed on McDonald's kind of jobs, a few are leaching the welfare system.

What you write is an urban legend that is based on some flawed research which considers only linguistic backgrounds without giving much attention to social aspects. Immigrant children are often the children of, for a lack of a better expression, blue collar class. Frequently, they lack academic aspirations because they do not have examples to follow. But even that is not a rule, as many families do see the benefits they, and their kids may have not had in their original countries.

Language is not just a bunch of words and rules of grammar. Another language helps people achieve this additional angle of view on pretty much all aspects of life. The multitude of meanings of words, and the multitide of ways to understand words, concepts and reality, which speaking more than one language affords, allows them to have more flexible and original minds. That, however, is only a potential, not a guarantee.

After all there are also examples of people who learn and achieve a degree of proficiency in languages other than their native ones, and yet they are utter fools who cannot see beyond the ends of their noses, or outside their 5 bedroom houses. These people are commonly known as home grown philosophers.

History / Poland-Russia: never-ending story? [1341]

Both Russia and Poland achiveded success, there was no compromises and all Polish Russians media talk about success. Interesting.

This is actually alarming. During communism every single day was a fvcking success. Every single day our communist heroes in cooperation with the Soviet communist heroes did nothing but achieved success. It was great and we were all heading towards a heaven on earth.

And then the whole thing collapsed.
