Life / Begging in Poland (new scam) [9]

A few weeks ago I was stopped in the street by a very polite and respectable young woman. I thought she might be a student and I listened to her problem.

She told me that she had had her wallet/purse stolen and she needed money to get the train home. As it happened I had no change and couldn't help her out.

Today, at the station my wife and I were given the same story by some young guy. He was holding and displaying how little money he had and gave the same story as the girl. My wife recorgnized him and said ''You must suffer a lot from bad luck because you asked me the same question last week''. The young man then wandered off.

So, what I'm saying is that there is a new scam going on in Poland whereby respectable looking, believable types are asking for money.

This is no ordinary scam. These people are using their good looks, respectability and a believable story.

Be careful and don't get caught out.

Life / Surviving the Polish Winter [27]

If the weather is a bad, meaning deep snow, wear some sort of boots and carry your shoes into work.
But, the authorities are pretty quick when it comes to clearing the streets of snow.
I usually wear trainers year round, unless I'm in a suit and then it's regular footwear.

You are not visiting another planet. We can deal with snow.

Life / Buying US car, Living in Poland [7]

If you do get a car in Poland and you take it back to the States. Make sure that it fits the legal requirerments. Sometimes the specifications on certain models are different.

An obvious point, but easy to overlook.

Why can't the company pay the difference. Then you can get a new car tomorrow.
After all, you do own the company.

Life / Embarassment of the egocentric use of English language in Poland! [20]

It was those native speakers who spoke SO loudly, just to try to impress people by the fact that they speak English!

I thought I noticed this with a couple of Italians the other day. But it also occured to me that the only reason I noticed was simply that they sounded different. They just stood out more. They were by no means talking in loud voices.

I'm sure that it's very much the same with most native speakers. You can pick them out because it's your native tongue.

It didn't occur to me that you might be offended.

All is well now. No problem.

News / English vs. Polish hostility [323]

There is a person on this thread using my exact words in his/her text.

If you are going to use my words or even paraphrase, it would be nice if you could acknowledge the fact.

Love / Dating age difference - my 16 yo is dating a 26 yo Polish guy [102]

They aren't having sex, and it seems that he really cares for her.

I imagine the first thing you did when you had sex was tell your folks all about it,

He cares enough about her to wait one or two months more. She'll still be sixteen and it will still be rape [as I understand your law]

I wouldn't be to happy about a relationship like this, but hell, maybe he is just helping her with her homework.

Can it be such a bad thing, if she is in charge of her emotions.

Genealogy / Polish Coat of Arms, Leliwa or Doliwa or? [20]

The daughter's name appears to be Josephine

I've had another look and can now see the tail of the letter 'p'. I can't see the name Josephine, but common sense tells me that you are probably right.

Genealogy / Polish Coat of Arms, Leliwa or Doliwa or? [20]

whats the name right above Rykowski on that census?

To me. the family name looks like Wigzenaki.

William...... head
Valeria.......wife
*raibbens...daughter.

The family name and the daughter's name are only my opinion based on a difficult text.
I'm sure other people will see something different.

There are websites that can help you with period handwriting.

Genealogy / Polish Coat of Arms, Leliwa or Doliwa or? [20]

The document is normal. Russia/ Poland just means a part of Poland controlled by Russia [or vice versa]

It's written that way for political reasons.

The document proves that the family come from eastern Poland. Or what is now a bordering country.

Travel / 7 months in Warsaw... What do i need? [8]

anybody know about taking brazilian foods and drinks on luggage? Is there any restriction?

How much are you talking about ? If you fill your suitcase with food it will be over the baggage limit.

If you mean a few tins/cans of meat/soup etc, you should be OK.

Your biggest problem is what you can put on the plane when you depart Brazil. Check with the airline.

Genealogy / TRACING AN OLD FRIEND - Darek Pomykała [3]

I would like to trace an old penfriend of mine. His name was Darek Pomykała, and from Wrocławska

If he was a penfriend, you should have his or his parent's address. If not, have you tried the phone directory for the region.

You could also try to find an internet site for the town or nearest town and then post a message on their message board. You really need someone local to help you.
