Life / Buying a laptop in Poland with English O/S [11]

However all laptops on sale in Poland seem to be with Polish Windows

The netbook I'm using came with a choice of English or Polish.

I imagine that that is because it is a mobile unit. Some laptops may be similar. You should be able to check what each model offers by doing a google.

I'm sure you'll find something.

Genealogy / Daughter, 30, disappeared August 25th Warsaw. Stayed in hotel Warszawa Chopin. [21]

Can somebody help us or advise anything?

When was the last time you spoke to her ?

She must have checked out in the morning, yes/no

What time was her flight ?

Did she take a cab ? if so, did the hotel order it ?

Does she have a mobile phone ? The phone company might be able to trace the signal.

Law / Business setup in Poland [36]

Poland is an emerging market and as in life change is slow,

Food / Ham stringbean green bean soup [5]

once popular in the peasant cookery of the Wielkopolska region. Is that where your ancestors are from?

What are you trying to say ?

Travel / The most overrated or disappointing places to visit in Poland? [13]

I've got to say that I found the Mazurian Lake District very disappointing. It is totally beyond me how this place ended up on a list of the world's best places.

Why ? Because when one is sailing the only thing one can see is water, more boats and the tree lined shore. When sailing with a good wind or enjoying the sun it may appear beautiful, but in that case so would the Havel Lakes in Berlin or anywhere else.

Admittedly, on my last visit I kept off the boat as much as possible and walked as much as 30km a day... from port to port. Then I could admire the countryside, farms, large houses and forests, but I still don't consider the area to be of outstanding natural beauty.

The Lake District in England seems to offer much more, at least in the way of colour and diversity of landscape.

To sum up:
The Mazurian Lake District is a great place to go. Good sailing, nice little bars, various activities on offer. It just doesn't live up to it's reputation as 'the best'.

Life / Deadly Roads - "Are polish roads really THAT dangerous?" [139]

whats the deal with zebra crossings here? I gotta say I dont feel so safe when using them.

there was a time when Polish cars never stopped. if a car did stop you could be sure that it was german registered. now the law has changed, but of course it only applies to a minority of drivers... most seem exempt.

I shouldn't complain too much... after all, only two members of my family have been hit while crossing at a zebra crossing.

Genealogy / DNA Test Poland [29]

as long as i am paying maintenance to her

As I understand things:
Under Polish law this means that you have accepted responsibility for the child.
And that means it will be difficult to activate the 'get out clause'
The one who requests the test... pays for it.
Two or three years ago it was 1500zl.

Love / Polish woman and children [14]

please advise, thank you

There are plenty Polish folk in second marriages or partnerships... and of those there are a good percentage with kids from the former marriage.
I agree with all the above posts too.

Life / Taking action against landlords / landladies [10]

Which is the easiest and most effective way of reporting them to the authorities for tax evasion, and land them in the schnizzle?

make sure that you have a knowledgeable person with you in case things backfire.

News / WHY DOES POLAND, EU PERMIT FLOOD OF CHINA JUNK? [40]

junk produced through child labour and grossly underpaid labour.

link please.

The Chinese have entered the automotive age and within a year or two will be flooding markets with underpriced cars,

Then it is up to the European Union to do better... and compete.

Life / More Polish supermarket griping...this time about customers [29]

I am not an American but I am also surprised that people in Poland never offer to give up their place in a queue even if you have 1 item in a shop.

I find that it is only men who might let someone ahead of them.

Women seem to have a God given right. The supermarket is the only place in Poland where I will not give way to any female.

Life / Deadly Roads - "Are polish roads really THAT dangerous?" [139]

So in answer to the OPs question Polish roads themselves aren't that dangerous but the incompetent barely qualified egotistical clueless morons that use them are.

I'd add that it is a statistical fact that most Polish drivers are colour blind. This is evidenced by the fact that a traffic light at red or amber has little or no meaning.

Love / Polish Girls Reputation [231]

Read my post #37

post number 1:

I'm a little concerned about some negative comments I get from people back home (UK) about Polish girls, or having a Polish girlfriend.

You're getting some negative comments because your original post implies that you are British.
English can be a strange language.

Genealogy / Do Polish cemetaries have records [10]

We were surprised to learn that many of the births in Poland several years ago, happened to be illegitimate. Born to single mothers, out of wedlock.

It's the same with UK genealogy. Very often the first born seemed to be the reason for getting married, or at least hurried up the marriage.

Life / U2 and Sabaton in Poland - Polish Music chat (no video clips please) [4]

I guess now I -have- to go see Sabaton later on, to make up for it!

Are they coming to Poland ? Tell me why I should see them.

New Year's Day.
from wikipedia: The lyric had its origins in a love song from Bono to his wife, but then was reshaped and inspired by the Polish Solidarity movement.

What is it about U2 and this song ? How is it that this song has a greater effect on the Polish people than any written by a Polish national ?

Life / U2 and Sabaton in Poland - Polish Music chat (no video clips please) [4]

I am bothered by the fact that we have music video threads, but never discuss the actual song.

In this thread I would like to know more about seeing bands, being there, the buzz that you get and also something about Polish venues: clubs, open-air, stadium gigs.

Also, who are the top DJ's and where do they play ?

How about getting there, cost of travel, distance, advertising/promotion of various gigs.

Let's talk. No clips, just words. If the topic strays from one idea to another it shouldn't be too much of a problem to create a new thread out of the original.

All we have to do to keep it Polish is talk about bands visiting Poland and Polish bands playing anywhere.

Snow Patrol and U2: who went, what was it like, what did they play. From what I've read it was the best gig in Poland... EVER !
