Language / (part 2) Polish Language Pronunciation - Sample Words and Phrases [311]

Is it a rule of thumb that in every word the W is pronounced phonetically as V (vee)? Eg Wisla (veesla) or piwo (peevo)? Thanks in advance for your help :)

Thats the general rule. As lowfunk said, it can take on the 'f' sound, however it is the 'V' most of the time.

Love / Polish girls and this age thing? [173]

That depends on the man and the woman. My dad is only 3 years older than my mom and people always think that he is much older than she is. When we moved in to our current property, a neighbor told my mom that she thought my parents were a 'may -december relationship'. My mom often gets mistaken for being my older sister. My grandmother is approaching 70 and still has her natural black hair. She has less grays than her 40something son. It all depends on genetics.

ETA:

communication is the most important.

I completely agree with you Miranda!.

I used to play the flute when I was in gr 6-8 :)

Forget it, unless you're really ugly, because she insists you have to be really f*cking ugly before she thinks you're actually hot..

having a guitar helps too!

Love / Polish girls and this age thing? [173]

Ok... so i visited Poland a few weeks ago and saw a lot of things most of them beautiful if you know what i mean;-) but one of the strange things i saw was that a lot of young polish girls seemed to be with older guys... when i say older i mean around 10 years older or so, maybe a little less but always atleast 5 years older. This is weird, you never see this in england... never! So why is this cos there has to be some reason and i cant think why?

You never see this in England? Someone used Heather Mills as an example, and I doubt that she's the only young woman in England dating an old geezer (sorry beatles fans).

In my opinion, there are two main reasons why this happens:
1. Old man + money + young woman = perfect match in patriarchy
2. Women (sometimes) tend to mature faster than men. Personally, I wouldn't mind dating a guy that is 10-15 years older than me. I am 22 (23 in April!) and see nothing wrong with dating a guy that is close to 30. I've always liked men to be a bit older, and not because they might have money (sugar daddy = a feminist's nightmare). Guys my age (22-23) just don't interest me.....unless they're really hot :)

UK, Ireland / New British Based Points System [30]

In Canada the points based system has its problems but overall it seems to be working okay. I think it would be a good idea for the EU to do this. A nation can only be so open.

This is true, but the US took the industry and turned it into more than just face reconstruction. It is home to the trout pout :) Surely thats something to be proud of?

USA, Canada / Polish ladies beauty secrets from the USA [30]

Sorry!!

you were close!

Dentistry is the main reason for people travelling to Poland from the UK - I had veneers done last time I was in Warsaw and am more than happy with them, but I've read that that the number of cosmetic surgery patients travelling to Poland is on the increase.

I guess that I don't see dentistry as cosmetic even though it can be.
I don't know, it just seems weird to me that people would be going to Poland to get their boobs done. Oh well, at least Poland is getting some industry :)

Canada.

I wouldn't trust it. I've heard of people in the US going to Mexico for cosmetic surgeries because its supposed to be so much cheaper but it often ends up being a botched job. Poland probably has better equipment but I doubt that there are enough surgeons with experience and expertise in this arena.

But then, I'm cynical of any kind of cosmetic surgery, anywhere :S

USA, Canada / Polish ladies beauty secrets from the USA [30]

but there are plenty of good cosmetic surgeons in Poland....

I doubt that lol! If I ever elected to do plastic surgery (and I wouldn't because it makes people look creepy) I definitely wouldn't get it done in Poland. I don't think that there's a big market for it, so I doubt most of the surgeons would be all that experienced. Where would the Polkas get the money to do it?

I think that cosmetic surgery is overall more prevalent in the US (esp LA) than it is pretty much anywhere in Europe....although I have read an article that women in Italy were getting new hymens sown back on before getting married. Still, I doubt that many women actually did it.

UK, Ireland / Poles in UK turn to fast food [29]

i see so many poles resorting to fasst food in UK i was at this place in ilford near london and they have taken the polish pound very seriously, menus in polish and even the staff saying pleasse and thank you.

My grandmother would die if she saw that. She is completely against restaurants because she sees them as a waste of money. If we wanted fries (chips) she'd cook them herself. Unfortunately, she did not batter anything and cut the fat out of everything lol.

Lody were the only exception. mmmmmm śmietana flavoured lody :)

Life / Polish people with learning difficulties? [42]

I add Poland to my list of countries where, well,to be blunt, you just dont see disabled people around and about and when you do there tends to be lots of pointing and smirking........Lets hope its not bulgaria mkII.

There's a family in the area that I'm originally from that had 2 out of 4 kids with learning disabilities. One of them never attended school of any kind and his parents recieve money every month to take care of him . His sister is less 'disabled' than he is and went to school for a few years but she ended up failing almost all of her classes so she was eventually taken out of the school system. However, she doesn't get gov't cheques because she is able to function relatively normally (ie hold a job) while her brother isn't. This taking out of school business occurred during the communist times so I honestly don't know how it is dealt with now. Also, they were treated 'normally' (not pointed at) around there because just about everyone in the area was used to them. Basically, they are treated like young children by people.

History / Where do Polands non Jewish victims go? [64]

yeah I found it odd also. "Reveling in victimhood" is a great way to put it.

I'm not a big fan of talking about history or trying to glorify nations but to pretend that one group of people were solely victimized while the others were nothing more than incidental casualties of the war is simply irresponsible.

As I stated I do not hate Jewish and will always consider them my equal, just not better. Carol

Well said Carol.

Love / 5 ways how to pick up (cute Polish) guys? [146]

I'm sitting on the train/subway and next to me there is a woman with fake nails exactly like it shows in the picture you posted. Then she drops her metrocard, and tries to pick it up and goes "can you pick it up for me, my nails won't let me" Hahaahah Okay I gave it to her. I bended over, touched the dirty train's floor with my finger tips, just to give her a metrocard. I'm way too nice Lol !!

LOL You know its bad when you can't do things for yourself :)

My place is safer , more peaceful , less noise and I can go to the city any time I want.

And probably less polluted!

Sunsets in the country are incomparable to any in the city. Still, I love the city for its own purposes :)

I can argue that patriarchy exists almost everywhere. Women are oppressed in both the global South as well as the North.

I'm perfectly happy living in Canada. However, I'm not going to pretend that Canada doesn't have an ugly history. Canada has been doing especially well since deciding to update the Charter in 1982. :)

You have to remember that Canada, the US and Australia are exceptions to colonial pasts where they were able to bounce back economically. (Also Japan which was a US colony for a short period of time)

yep, you sound like women and gender or equity studies woman:)

I'm a Polis Sci/English Lit double major. Although some gender studies classes have been known to happen :)
Are you in school too?

I simply must visit this country soon. What a difference in work ethic there must be there.

The only problem is that many young people want to move to the city instead of working on a farm, simply because it is such hard work.

Life / Culture & Women [80]

yes,my point on the friggin nose,Britain hasnt been "in charge" in india since 1947,so complaing that sati goes on today is hardly the "fault" of Britain is it??

umm....you are a very confused person. You need to learn to read in chronological order.
1. I said in response to another post about 'backwards' traditions in Japan that there is widow burning in some parts of India.
2. You said that there isn't because the British Empire got rid of all that savagery.
3. I argued with you that the Empire did not do away with the savagery because colonialism itself is a form of savagery.
4. You argued that because the British outlawed it a long time ago that it stopped under British rule and crept back when the Brits left. (btw, what happened to Westphalia, self-determination and all that jazz?)

And so on..

you know that you argument lucks legs to stand on. There is no excuse for colonization and coming up with "we saved the savages from themselves" excuse or rather justification, is something no one belives anymore.

Thanks Miranda for being the voice of logic!

Love / 5 ways how to pick up (cute Polish) guys? [146]

Thats because you haven't been to a Polish farm. I have some cousins that live on farms in Poland and I've been there to visit and some of the women are simply beautiful. Its almost impossible for a young able-bodied female to get fat working on a farm because the job is so physically demanding. Another bonus: they usually have teeth too :)

I think make up could hide the real/natural beauty of a woman. And I do not think it attracts men unless you're wearing clown's makeup hahah

Completely agree with you here. Looking like a birthday cake will attract no one lol.

Of course I'm a girl :/ I'm just informing you what I think and what my experience with boys is telling me. I fully agree with myself (lol) and partially with you.

LOL. I'd be worried if you didn't agree with yourself! See, when you worded it like that, I actually agreed with almost everything you said: that a girl needs to take care of herself and feel good about herself. If she wants to attract a (cute Polish) male, she's better off when she takes care of herself. However, even if she doesn't want to attract a (cute Polish) male, she should still take care of herself :)

and again, manicures/pedicures is sort of an habit around here. Many girls like to wear long fake nails lol gezz I would never wear such things! I don't find it attractive at all.

Manis/pedis are also a 'habit' in Toronto lol. You'll find one of these salons at almost every intersection. Personally, if I were to actually get it done, I'd rather do it myself. I'll buy a good quality nail polish (such as OPI) and do it myself, because sometimes even the 'classiest' joints skimp on cleaning properly because it saves them time and money.

As for fake nails....they creep me out. Have you ever been beside a woman with fake nails and she had to scratch her arm or something? I could almost hear her skin breaking from those claws.

Ok then smart arse.did the British do away with sati or not? Did they outlaw such practices or not? Sorry but you kinda prove a point I wasnt trying to make...ie that under British administration the ancient savage ways were done away with and made illegal...however since 1947 and independance those nasty habits have crept back, like sati, and dalits etc etc......

Yes they 'outlawed' it, but it hasn't stopped. I never said it was the fault of the British. You're the smart one that declared that the oh so civilized British made sure that the savagery in India stopped.

Oh,and BTW mali,if you hate colonialism so much, what the hell are you,a white girl ,doing living in Canada....surely you should kiss some native arse then toot sweet set off for europe......

Luckily, I don't live in Canada as a Native, where neo-colonialism is present.
I have nothing wrong with the British at all, but lets not go around saying that they were there to get rid of savagery in India. Colonialism is completely barbaric and savage. Do you really want me to dig up articles of what the British colonialists did in many countries that was savage? Are you really so blindly patriotic that you refuse to see the ugliness that was caused by colonialism in many countries?

Not wearing anything would make it even easier.

That would attract attention of all kinds! LOL I hope you're not talking about making a public appearance in the nude :)

I find that men like me best when I look and feel natural. I also like my men not to be too pampered either. Like you said, clean and well put together is great.

No guy that I would actually take seriously would care too much about that stuff.

UK, Ireland / My fellow brits here - are "traitors" by not dating English girls? [103]

So 35+ is old....fek me where's me zimmer frame!...Besides any woman that looks after herself will look good I dont think its a nationality thing...or maybe its the men they date that makse them look hagard.....

apparently 35 is the new 65 lol! How ridiculous!
If only men were the sex symbols that they expect women to be.

So that means, i have been and probably will be a traitor to Britain again for dating a foreign national. What sort of statement is that. I'm British so i have to date a British girl, how rediculous is that for an idea. I tell you what let's just seal up the borders and have nobody move from one country to another.

Traitor.

*shakes head in disappointment*

thanks... we are due to have a baby in 5 months time, and contrary to your beliefs, we are rock solid bud...

Congrats and Good Luck! :)

Life / Cool Polish names [133]

What about Zygfryd? Or Genowefa (Gienia ;)?

Are they really names, i thought Justysia was kidding?????

Technically, neither of them are even etymologically Polish names.
Zygfryd is the Polish version of Siegfried (as in Siegfried and Roy) and this name is originally German (be happy you didn't get this German name lol!)

Genowefa is the Polish version of Genevieve, which is originally French.

In actuality, there are very few Polish or Slavic names that are not versions of some name. The same thing with English names, very few names that are considered 'English' are actually etymologically 'Old English'. Ie Bible names such as John, Sarah,Daniel and Zack are Hebrew. Popular names such as Robert, William and Henry are actually Old German, etc. I had a friend that was obsessed with the etymology of names, so unfortunately I've been privy to way too many of these boring 'lectures' lol.

Are there really any cool Polish names that aren't versions of some other name?

Ok I just wated to present some facts, to find this pic it is enpught to goole "pijani anglicy" (drunk english) and similar sentences ...

Here's the problem. Anyone can take a pic of a stupid drunk guy and say he's British, Polish, Lithuanian etc. For the most part, there would be almost no way of telling them apart from those pics.

... some reactions really disappointed me :)

Not everyone is going to agree with you. Not all Polish people think the same as you!

Finally we have 80% increase of English mailes looking for Polish girls ... a little bit deprest British girls.

You can't pull a statistic out of your butt and expect people to take it seriously.
