UK, Ireland / Are the Poles in England hated? [450]

I found a Polish delicatessen today, so I went in and greeted the lady in Polish.
She started talking, but I didn't understand her, so...

I started laughing at her, calling her various 'adjectives', smashed the place up with one of their own kielbasas, then left... still laughing.

UK, Ireland / Boris Johnson has been declared the Mayor of London [25]

London being a very skewed version of Englishness/Britishness

I think London is like a different country. It's something for the rest of Britain to admire in some ways, but to look down on in others.

95% of voting is AGAINST something

That is kind of correct. Parties don't win elections, it is the other party that loses the election.
The majority of voters just vote for the party for whom they've always voted.

Is this in his list of pledges?
Big, white, foppish mops on heads for all.

UK, Ireland / Boris Johnson has been declared the Mayor of London [25]

As if London doesn't already have one of the highest levels of CCTV intrusion already.
Encouraging recycling - the usual stuff these days. Just don't delegate this responsibility to Tesco.
Affordable housing - in London - right!
More people in uniforms on public transport? Mmmm - uniforms! I know where he's coming from.
Overspending in government? A typical thing for a new incumbent to say they'll do. It'll never happen.

English society has always been brilliant at its top end and s-h-i-t-e at the bottom end

What does that mean? Bottom end? Top end? Where's Boris in that?

UK, Ireland / Poles returning to Poland from UK [21]

Plumbing as a job? I thought it was something to do as a hobby.

Reading stuff about Britain relying / not relying on Polish people has just reminded me - the rent money is four days late. I rely on that money.

I can't say that I prefer Poles over workers from the other A8 countries (is that what they're called?) but putting them all together, the quality and quantity of work is usually far better than I've seen from any other temporary workers I've seen in the 10 years I've been in horticulture.

But that's about temporary workers. This Monday, we employed a new woman full-time, who lasted one day. Probably a work-dodger who enjoys living on the dole and takes a job for a day every so often to keep them from taking her benefits away. Just a wild guess, that. Most of the British people I work with work very hard.

UK, Ireland / BBC article on Polish food in the UK [22]

My local council won't take certain kinds of recyclable materials because Tescos already do it, and they reward club card points. Tescos already get involved with schools, so they have started on education. When I need an operation and get sent to Tescos for it, I think I'd rather suffer whatever adverse consequences might ensue rather than be as guilty as so many others are in this erosion of democracy.

If I want Polish food, I either:

1. Go to Poland.
2. Get the lodger to cook something (he has to phone his cousin for recipes).
3. Have something out of a jar bought at the local Costcutter.
4. Go without.

Has anyone ever seen these in the UK?

Me niether.

big supermarket

By the way, Tesco will steal your souls. All of your souls. They will soon provide every service we rely on government for, including health, education and the military. They will own all the land, and they will even own the very air that we breathe. The omniscient, the omnipresent, the onmnipotent. The all-giving, the all-good. Look out Venus! Look out Mars! Look out Saturn! They will even own Polishforums.

UK, Ireland / Man found guilty of the kidnap and murder of his former Polish girlfriend [23]

yeah, whats that all about?

That might be referring to the £1000 she had asked off him so she wouldn't press charges against him for a previous incident.

Despite how sick this individual looks from what you read at the top of this thread, it gets worse. He even planned to have his aunt shot when his uncle decided to give evidence.

sick fuk

Well said. I hope he rots in his cell.

Life / Where would you rather live in Poland? [54]

I've just written the definitive Baltic sea-shanty:

Volvo yeah yeah yeah in the Baltic yeah yeah yeah
Saab Saab Saab yeah, all on the baltic sea bed.
Volkswagen, Audi, Mercedes, they all pay the price.
But there's a Maluch, a Maluch, a Maluch on the ice
Of the Baltic, the Baltic, the Baltic, yeah yeah baby!
I got a Maluch on the Baltic and I'm sailing, sailing, baby!

If you think that people who are friendly to you to your face and nasty behind your back are all or the majority of people, that says more about your view of the world than anything about the reality of the world.

femal species

Feral species?
Female species?

Only one of the two makes any sense.

In the higher divisions of the animal kingdom (that includes 99.8% of the members of this forum), species is usually defined by the ability of male and female members to be able to succesfully create an offspring thart is in turn, able to succesfully reproduce. Donkeys mate with donkeys to make more donkeys (phoarr!). Pairs of horses make yet more horses. But mules (half donkey, half horse), are sterile and can't make babies (ahhh! Poor things! ... Oh, but they can try!)

Crewe

Too many people calling this place Tsreve?

UK, Ireland / UK is Poles apart from home [39]

Some of us natives don't live in palaces.

a dead-end job

Will there be suddenly no demand for van drivers?
How do you know this job might not lead to a better one?

Life / Poles' tolerance towards other Races [190]

white (of which English 83.6%, Scottish 8.6%, Welsh 4.9%, Northern Irish 2.9%)

This doesn't make sense. The English, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish add up to 100%. Does that mean southern Irish, French, German, Polish, etc. are all non-white?

If anyone asks me, my answer depends on how the question is put or who is doing the asking.
For one thing, I am not Caucasian. Caucasians come from the Caucasus. I come from Britain.

UK, Ireland / The Independent about Poles in the UK: "Poles are under attack." [83]

It seems that you can be more rude, more insulting and more derogatory to those who are more similar to yourself. That doesn't mean you'll get away with it though. Anne Robinson (whoever she is) said something nasty about the Welsh. She was forced to apologise, no doubt in part because Wales and the Welsh have enough say in things to make such a demand.

I think there may have been another thread on the subject - the complaint made against the Daily Hate Mail by the Federation of Poles in Great Britain. I vaguely remember the Daily Fascist reacting, not only by raising one or two tiny little concerns that may almost have some relevence, but also by banging on about things such as illegal immigrants and terrorism that have as much to do with Polish workers as Anne Robinson has to do with the words 'Cymru am byth!'

Love / Is it possible to be friends with girls in Poland? [59]

trashy, cheap gold clothes

It's amazing how difficult it is trying to find a gold lame shirt on the internet.
Should I ask for a translation into Polish, or would I only find ladies clothes in this colour?

History / Stolen heritage of Kievian Rus'. [22]

Caesar - head of hair (Latin)
Julius Caesar - I imagine he had quite a coiffure.
Caesar (in various different forms) - title bestowed upon various princes, especially in the east after the fall of the Byzantine Empire
Tsar / Czar, etc - The East Slavic / Russian form of this name / title.

It was one of those Russian myths that helped to make them think they were great - a kind of third and final stage in a historical trinity, Rome - Byzantium - Moscow.

Countries build themselves not only on realirty, but on myths, from which they form or try to form their reality.

The title Kaiser is another offspring of the name Caesar.
I could also mention Caesar salad, caesarian section, drugs tsar and Zsa Zsa Gabor, but I won't.

UK, Ireland / Survey of Poles in the UK [24]

I thought that if I posted it here, someone would find out more about it, like:

it was carried out in September 2006

I couldn't find anything saying that, but then it probably says it in bold capital letters right at the top of the page, then again half way through, then at the end... and in the URL... and in a few other places as well.
