the local government finally decided to shut off all the office light at night but that's because they were wasting millions on light bill and there is a huge shortage of tax moneys. i don't care how they arrived at this decision but i am v. glad they finally did.

yes, for the most part it's too cold, especially the winters. grapes have a hard time but they do grow maybe just not the wine varieties.

they have wineries in Canada but it's in the southernmost part of the ON.

Life / To all of you who are Polish - where did you learn English? [64]

i learned English in middle school. i was immersed in it as nobody spoke my language there. everybody in the class was from a different place in this world so we all had to swim.

i think reading and looking up every single word i didn't know expanded my understanding and vocabulary. i've always took pride in trying to pronounce words in the natives' way. most people think i am from canada or one of the northern states. nobody ever guesses PL. lol.. untill the hear my name, that is. :D

ń - has a more 'en' sound before the actual n consonant sound comes out.

reads good. :) i'd say the 'en' part is close but may not be exactly so if 'ń' is in the middle of the word or at the end.. it will depend on what's just before it.

I see Shawn's point. There was sb who was the first translater of a soup who, for a laugh, translated it as vagina soup. In Polish of course so the questioner had no idea

right, but others chimed right in about it.

My favorite that I can't buy in the state is black current.

any polish store should carry them. i see all of the shoppes in chicago have it amongst all the other varieties.

kompot (compote)
and eveclear infusions are very popular in PL

if you want to find out about food, there is at least one thread about traditional meals in PL somewhere around here.
