Life / do polish girls get pregnant while in school? [28]

choose whether to work or stay on benefits,

I see your point. There are definitely a large amount of teenage single mothers who remain on benefits because they think its their 'entitlement'. I know a girl who had a baby, gets all the benefits and basically never sees her child, she's always off out, her kid knows her aunts/uncles/cousins better than she knows her Mother.

Yes there are single Mothers who remain on benefits simply because for to work, it would cost them money in child care etc and therefore there is no real point in working.

Amathyst - an old friend of mine (I rarely see her now) had a baby when she was sixteen to a guy she thought would stick around - he didn't. I thought she might go down the benefits route and for a while she did - the coucil house etc. Then she changed her mind, moved her and her daughter into a room in her parents house and worked her rear end off getting her nursing degree. She bought a house a couple of years ago with her new husband and her daughter and is a respected member of the maternity team at the local hospital. Although she lived with her parents they didn't pander to her.

UK, Ireland / Flooding in Northern England [74]

I spoke on another thread about a similar situation here in Wroclaw ten years ago.

I remember you talking about it. I think here we've all just had a major jolt because now its not just flooding, its beginning to be about people not having water to drink or food to eat in some places. There's 6 flood warnings still in place in England so its not easing off any. There just doesn't seem to be an end to it at the moment.

no running water and are relying on bottled water..and they are worried about raw sewage and the problems that can cause.

Its a grim nightmare Amathyst. If you've not read it already then see bbc.co.uk news site there's a lot on there for reading.

Travel / The best city/town in Poland for: A) holidays B) living [18]

but lets lay off Michal, he is entitled to his opinion.
And lets no overreact, he didn't say he hated Poland, he just said that he finds it boring

he sure is entitled to his opinion but if you read over his many, many posts then you'll see that he does seem to dislike Poland (despite visiting it often) and Polish people. He posts upsetting things often and then argues with people who disagree with him. Its like a hobby.

As for yourself. You don't seem over impressed with Poland either. You maybe should have made the effort to get to Gdansk as nothing else has apparently tickled your pickle!

hate-filled creature hates Poland for the fact that there are concrete bridges and billboards in the country, then it should hate practically every other European country.

exactly. I live in Scotland and can't help but see concrete bridges and billboards. I'm pretty much stumped as to what he expects bridges to be built of actually? Straws? Polystyrene?

what have I done by coming back here again?

Then why go??? Save your money and go somewhere you like! I can assure you - Poland can do without you!

Whats the best city/town in Poland for A)holidays B)living

I don't know about living but for holidays it obviously depends on what you're looking for. Warsaw is probably good for a first time visit but then again, there's so much in all the cities...I would pick somewhere in the Tricity because I am a girl who likes the ocean and likes to be near it!

Love / Foreigners in relationships with Poles - do your in-laws accept you? [66]

My parents have never put restrictions on me either. I have never met on/off's parents and probably wouldn't want to unless things become more serious (although if they were over here visiting I wouldn't avoid them). His friends accept me though and this is okay for me for now.

My parents used to hippies so for them - anything goes - lol :-)

Love / Which is better? Being single or being in a relationship? [92]

Do you think that some people are in relationships just because they are afraid of being single?

Yeah I think this is true. I know people who flit from relationship to relationship and spend the minimum of time as a single person! Its wrong. How can you know what you want if you never have time to be with yourself? They say they can't be single!

Does anyone else feel this pressure?

Yes. I have talked about this on Justyna's topic 'what a girl wants'. I know people who have married young/early so that they not be alone but I cannot understand this.

Being single is cool. No worrying about anyone, no obligations and best of all, no heartaches. But you know what? If you will never get your heart broken, you will never learn to love.

Where did you get this Pingwin? Its so very true!

UK, Ireland / Trying to find out what Poles like to do in the UK [35]

the TV doesnt say say what he says.

Sorry, I meant that he doesn't have any first hand knowledge of what Polish people like or do - its all secondary knowledge or stuff that he has made up! Sorry, should have explained myself better - I am tired :-)

But not breakfast TV.

True. Actually, I don't know where he gets what he says. Its not from Polish people anyway.

My guess is that he is completely guessing. He doesn't like Polish people, doesn't integrate with them himself and therefore has absolutely no idea what it is that Polish people like to do. He takes his knowledge from TV I think.

UK, Ireland / Trying to find out what Poles like to do in the UK [35]

I with you on that one Lady In Red. I get up at 5.15 most mornings for work and I make a cup of tea, get something to eat and I sit down and find out the news headlines on Ceefax and then get the news on BBC News 24 at 5.30. I have never thought this odd at any time. Quite honestly, I think a huge majority of people do this in the morning with television of some kind, kids programmes or just for general noise in the background.

I might add, when I am getting ready for work I have the radio on the background.

I need a temperature.

Okay, today its supposed to be the middle of Summer but our temp here in Edinburgh is maximum 13 degrees celsius (55 in farhenheit). So its not warm. You can go to bbc.co.uk/weather/ and get temps and forecasts for Britain and Europe.

In lots of places SG. However, if you come to Britain you can come any time of the year! Its always bloody freezing! ;-)

AvJoeUK

I read your post. I live in Edinburgh which is a much smaller city and getting around is still a nightmare whether you drive a car or take the bus. At rush hour buses are packed and people just barge to the front of queues and bash into you when you're on them. Some people say sorry, others do not and its very frustrating to me because I always apologise if I bash someone by mistake!

Its traffic lights that drive me nuts in Edinburgh, there are so many of them!!!

Life / Will Poland become like the UK ? [93]

English people have been doing this for years, I just wondered why he felt the need.

Oh I know but I feel that its good to get a better accent etc but to want to lose everything about him that is Polish...its sad but maybe he has his reasons for wanting to do this. I don't know the guy, I just felt sad because I would not want to lose my 'Scottishness' or 'Britishness' should I move elsewhere.

I am sad to read this. :-(

that i see begging or make the probs are not originally from the UK

In Edinburgh the greatest amount of beggers are from the city itself. Although, I don't deny there are foreigners begging on the streets but the majority are from Edinburgh or Britain at least.

Has it never occurred to you that the Poles do not really want to integrate much with the English as they have very little in common.

This may be true for some Polish people but I can assure you, the Polish people I am friends have a lot in common with myself and other Brits that are part of our group.

This statement of yours that I have quoted is another example of you grouping all Polish people into one - a sure sign that you have no intention of welcoming any Polish people to Britain.

And what would a bunch of Brits do if the situation was in reverse? They'd stick together at first.

exactly!!! Its taken ages for my Polish friends to start integrating with a wider circle of friends who include some Brits. Its probably also the reason why my on/off b/f is exactly that!
