Life / How do you Poles feel about the fact that so many Poles work abroad? [145]

In other words: it's those damn foreigners (the Poles perhaps?) who are guilty that Britain's educational standards have dropped down?

No. It's the ones who are coming en masse solely as students (mostly from places like southeast Asia). It brings money into the universities, but how suited they are to being accomodated in the British education system is debatable. A few Polish students is not the same subject.

Educational standards dropping - if this is the case, there are too many factors at play here, ranging from shift in mass culture towards a kind of dumbed-down "stupid is good" attitude, less parents either willing or able to instil a sense of enthusiasm in learning within their children, to a world that moves faster and leaves behind some of the old stuff we used to be taught, and neglects the things that are actually happening in the world around us. Add to that things like too many exams, not enough learning, too many targets and too many tight budgets.

Language / Any sweet Polish phrases [255]

It depends on how he reacts to different things. For example, my suggestion of naming him after the big hairy man-creature species out of Star Wars, may not be the best nickname, but you never know...

... until you try it.

Travel / Renting vehicles and maps in Poland [11]

Utter rubbish. In the last twelve hours, hovercraft sales in Poland have shot through the roof and everyone laughs at Audis.

Language / Polish Onomateopia [26]

Only today I was thinking about something I wanted to ask on this subject, but I can't remember what it was.

I was going to ask on this old thread. It's a golden oldie. polishforums.com/sound_effects_polish-18_3531_0.html#msg38714

News / Beginning dissolution of Britain. What would Polish immigrants now? [16]

You know batter then me

True.

Britain goes to oblivion, this way or another,

This story is ancient. Have you had a look at the two links I gave? It's an old lump of concrete sticking up out of the sea. Someone had the crazy idea that he could declare it to be an independent state. There have been lots of people who have tried to declare independent states around the world, many of them hippy communes or random people's living rooms or gardens. Look up the word "microstate" somewhere.

When you first came to PF, you posted the words: "Call me naive."
You, Crow, are naive.

News / Beginning dissolution of Britain. What would Polish immigrants now? [16]

Crow, tell us more. Have we lost the Isle of Wight with its cute little second-hand tube trains and cheap plastic dinosaur park?

Or is it this one:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Principality_of_Sealand
sealandgov.org

well, Brits are famous maniacs

Maniacs are not the same as eccentrics. I say we should all get into a big hovercraft whilst wearing full tweed outfits, and pelt bananas at it by means of a catapult made from elastic bands discarded by postmen.

News / Beginning dissolution of Britain. What would Polish immigrants now? [16]

I just heard on TV that one little island, declares independence from Britain.

If it's not Ireland, it's probably Sealand, a small lump of concrete dumped somewhere off the Essex coast in WWII by the military, then abandoned. Some nutter has been playing with it for years, giving himself various titles (I'm not sure if he claims to be a fully-fledged king or what). Anyway, I thought he'd put it up for sale.

UK, Ireland / Poland V's UK - staying or leaving? [11]

Can't seem to get rid of him yet. Especially when the new blonde girl is asking me for nice Polish phrases to say to him. Still, I appreciate the rent money, but I really don't understand how I'm suddenly the Polish language expert.

Poland V's UK

What is Poland V, and what is its UK? Just a wee grammatical question.

I've just had an idea - why not put an apostrophe before every letter s from now on.

I 'suppose thing's could 'start to look a bit 'silly, but 'so do 'so many 'sentence's with excec's'sive u'sage of apo'strophe's. I'm ju'st taking thing's to the logical conclu'sion.

Language / The Dative Case [62]

Billpawl, thou hast raised a very worthwhile point. But to whom? Michal himself?

Who on earth uses the ancient word "Ku" in Poland?

I don't know, but I hear a Slovakian ku quite a lot. But I am learning neither Russian nor Slovakian.

-u
-owi

When it is applied to a man's name, which is used? I have a book that states that the dative is more often used with people's names than with other nouns, but then it doesn't actually give any examples of how to use the dative with names.

Crude tool that is google, I tried it anyway.

Jurku - a small number of random results
Jurkowi - a much larger number of results, some of which looked like they were definitely in a dative context.

-owi it is then, unless anyone can give me any exceptions or corrections.

Noimmigration, read the following:

How do you Poles feel about the fact that so many Poles work abroad?

Stay on topic. If your post is not related to this thread, create a new thread or go **** yourself.

This a thread about how Polish people feel about Poles working abroad. So that could be anywhere not just the UK?

Life / The materials used for house building in PL, most popular? [10]

Concrete is like stone in many ways, but it is man-made. Bricks, again have similarities with stone. Clay, after all, is a kind of rock, albiet a very soft one, but I wouldn't call bricks stone.

Why do you ask?

Either because he's fascinated by Polish culture and the building materials of the world, or because he's a no good troll who thinks using the word "plank" is a good way of sneering at people.

Food / COFFEE BRANDS IN POLAND & ELSEWHERE? [17]

Blue Mountain from Jamiaca but it's prohibitive here in the states

Probited? So that you can't legally buy the stuff.
Or prohibitive? So it prevents you from doing various things? Like sleeping.

History / Are Germans going to pay for WW2? [180]

To be fair, Dunquerque was a retreat. A tactical one, but still a retreat.

The only reason

I don't believe it was the only reason - the straw that broke the camel's back more like.

Love / My polish g/f can be a nightmare,is it always like this [262]

all persons on this thread are in agreement

Cue huge fanfare!

WE, THE MEMBERS OF PF ARE, IN AGREEMENT - UNANIMOUSLY!

Let's all get drunk and have a wild party to celebrate.

do the right thing

Oh! On second thoughts, I'd say do the wrong thing, but this is the reason why: if he thinks he's being doing the right thing so far, if we tell him to do what he thinks is totally wrong, he might eventually get it right.

that USA, Germany, France, Britain, etc coutries of so called west (plus Arabs and Turks) decided to kill Yuga

If it hadn't been for all the sh!t that happened, I can't see why anyone would have wanted to break up Yugoslavia. It's not as though it was powerful enough to be a threat to anyone. Other than its own diverse population.

Is this a somewhat overused phrase that has to be altered slightly just to keep things interesting?

Language / Talking about the weather [22]

A link on Wikipedia yeidled this page that has an audio clip.

I'll stick to my regular pronunciation - without knowing how the same text would have sounded in standard Polish, it's not easy for a beginner like me to pick out much of what's different.

Wasn't me

You didn't type it, but maybe you thought it.

Tsar.

I'm unable to demonstrate the pronunciation in writing.

It's not one of those really shouty sort of accents that I might be able to hear from down here if you raise your voice enough?

Real Estate / Apartment purchase in Poland [226]

My kitchen must be worse. If the fitters don't turn up, I can offer my services. I'm not bad at plumbing, but occasionally make a few minor errors - kitchen sink installed upside down, forgetting to give the kitchen a floor, taking down shelves and forgetting to put them back up.
