Language / what is the difference between prosze and poprosze? [39]

Dannyboy!
Don't wish to appear rude, but the borsht (sorry, proper Polish "barszczt..")-belt humor is rather out of place, plus, your remarks essentially teach us nothing.

Guess I seem the proverbial sour-pickle puss, but, the last part particularly rubbed me the wrong way.

Marek

Marek, I strongly disagree, but your entitled to your opinion and I take note.

I was demonstrating the use of first person and third person, or snobbery as some people like to call it ;-) , (I would, One would) in what I considered to be a humorous manner.

This construction doesn't really exist in Polish from what I've been taught.

I'm sorry you didn't find it humorous, I'm going off for a good cry now!

Travel / The best city/town in Poland for: A) holidays B) living [18]

Thanks for replies everyone, but lets lay off Michal, he is entitled to his opinion.
And lets no overreact, he didn't say he hated Poland, he just said that he finds it boring.

My fiancee and sister went to Gdansk yesterday, I would have liked to go but I couldn't get holidays from work.
I found Poland very exciting the first time I went, the 2nd time I went to Zakopane which was good for a number of days but I think we stayed too long as I was bored after a few days. Skiing and mountains aren't really that exciting for me to do it for a week.

The third time, we just went to my girlfriends town for XMAS, it was very boring because the gym had gone bankrupt and moved to poznan and there wasn't much for me to do, although her dad tried hard in fairness to him, took me to see the gigantic cathedral and a few other things. Not as impressive as Rome, but still very impressive.

I don't really want to go back to visit my girlfriends family home so much, there are other places I would like to see like Spain, Greece, Egypt.

I can think of some interesting things I would like to do in Poland such as visit Auschwitz etc., but its not really a possibility due to her family obligations. I coudln't even really get a chance to explore Warsaw, I'm sure ye know why.

So after xmas, I decided to stop visiting Poland for a while.
But we will get married there next year so it won't be for too long :-)

Puzzler, I'm not sure if your 1st or 2nd generation Polish, what city would you recommend for a non-native if he decided he would like to move to Poland in the future?

Language / what is the difference between prosze and poprosze? [39]

Hi,

think of it as the difference between how the queen would speak and you would speak

you would say, I would like x,y,z (prosze)
the queen would say, one would like x,y,z (poprosze)

you would say, go f*ck yourself
the queen would say, would one go f*ck one's self
hitler would say, f*cken sie bitte

Language / affectionate term in Polish [59]

It translates roughly to "Listen to me, you bloody wagon", but its soft, its not a hard insult, more of a joke.

3. Here, have some money, I don't want it
4. Here, you have the remote control, lets watch Strongman/Boxing/Porno
5. Would you like me to strip?
6. I'm Sorry
7. It was my fault
8. You were right
9. Would you like your ice-creams?
10. Wanna play with my boobs for a while?

Life / How do young Polish couples cope with financial issues? [11]

I've noticed that Polish people get married and have children very early compared to people in Ireland.
Even the Polish people who live and work in Ireland are getting married and having children in their early 20s. While I don't criticise their decision and agree that perhaps it makes more sense to have children when you are younger and healthier, I do wonder how these people cope with financial issues etc.?

Most young people in Ireland cannot dream of buying a house, not to mention getting married and starting a family. Despite the fact that I've seen the Polish economy improve significantly over the last 3 years I've been visiting, I am still amazed at how people can afford to have children. How do they manage?

Most people in Ireland tend to wait until late 20's (29,29,30) to marry and start a family.
For me, its out of necessity, not out of choice.

News / Are there any other countries that Polish immigrants are going to? [70]

Those numbers are way out, those are the census numbers iirc, hardly accurate.

I met a certain civil servant recently who reckons the number of Polish in Ireland is closer to 400k than 200k. The UK also have a lot of 'unregistered' Poles.

There are also a huge amount of Chinese in Ireland, but they are not as visible as Poles obviously.

I believe Iberia relaxed their laws with regard to immigrants last summer (summer '06) or at least since that document was published.

There are other reasons that people are ignoring why Ireland/UK are so favoured, for example:

Economic - The growth of the economy relative to the population, favourable ratio
Social Welfare - Strong social welfare system in UK, moderate in IRL
Language - 1st language in IRL/UK is English, majority of French/Spanish often refuse to speak English
Previous Immigrants - UK is overrun by immigrants already, but they fail to take any responsible action. Ireland never had much of an immigrant population before aside from a few thousand nigerian and romanian.

Life / Is there anything worse than Polish rap? [148]

English rap isn't always so bad, is it? I don't think so.
Danny you from Ireland, are there any Irish rap groups you'd like to recommend?
(Hope its not that "Spiral" guy from Big Brother LOL! )

LOL :)

Sorry I've nothing to recommend, I lost touch with the rap scene a few years ago at this stage, more into Global Underground these days,

Life / Is there anything worse than Polish rap? [148]

US Rap of 1987 to 1997 is the golden era.
Modern American rap music can't even be used for torture in AbuGharaib, its just pathetic.

As someone who used to be an avid fan of all rap music, its obvious and fair to say French and Polish rap have been carrying the torch for quite a while now.The American stuff has degenerated into utter shite.

The rap worse than the US stuff is the English rap. Thats so bad its not even funny.

Language / A Native American or a Native Pole: Who is better into which language? [116]

Good post by the original poster.

whoever said Polish grammar takes a year to learn, lay off the drugs, I'm at it nearly 3 years now and still have only a bare grasp of it.

Out of all the languages I've learned Polish is the most difficult.
There is close to no standardisation, exteremly difficult for outsiders to follow.

English on the other hand is one of the easiest languages, highly standardised.
Followed closely by Spanish, then French, then German (only because German has 4 cases), then Gaelic languages such as Irish.

Polish is in the top 5most difficult languages in the world, anyone who thinks otherwise either grew up speaking the language or just doesn't have a clue

And by the way, half the polish people I meet can't even speak Polish that well either, don't get me started on spelling.

Says something.

News / Poland's Contribution to the E.U. [56]

Polish exports:

Coal - major contributor
Educated Workforce
Some of the best bodybuilders and strongmen in the world, pudzianowski, dymek
Top athlethes e.g soccer players, snow sports and equestrian events in particular.
Some of the most beautiful women
Polish beer - zywiec, lech, warka, okiciem (mocne preferably ;-)

High quality natural food, free from preservatives and chemicals unlike a lot of the food available in the UK & Ireland, over processed, high GI, sugar laden, salt laden gunk.

Academics - this field is just opening up but the standard of education is very high in Poland (due to communisim and lack of jobs historically). Poland has the second oldest university in Europe, Jagellonian in Krakow with the Czech one being the oldest if i recall correctly.

One of the hardest languages in the world ;-)

High quality clothes and fashion. In my experience, there is more variety in a shop in a small Polish town than in an entire shopping centre in Ireland.

Politics - Poles have been instrumental in progress of Eastern Europe and solidarity against Russian influence on both the baltic countries and the EU as a whole.

Non-export:
Poland is regarded as one of the top tourist destinations in the world, competing with places like Rome and Madrid

Love / Sad :( I feel i have lost something very special [32]

Typical, the women offer sympathy and support, but what do the men do?

Thats the difference between men and women my dear girl.

Women like to gather round and have a good cry, men need to let off steam with a few jokes.

News / Secret CIA Prisons in Poland [54]

LOL, if you think this is the worst they have, you live in a fantasy land.

They have a submarine base off the west coast of Ireland among other things.
They have been accussed of transporting prisoners through Shannon Airport which could technically render our neutrality defunct even though we don't participate.

News / EU or America - which country is better to work now? [56]

Quoting: dannyboy
A lot of americans are coming to the EU now looking for jobs because they have a massive problem with illegal immigrants from Mexico.

That's nonsense. Mexicans take menial jobs mostly - like working 16 hrs a day on farms in California (100 degrees) or doing maintinance/gardening jobs for $6-8 an hour. I don't see how Americans would take such jobs.

Sorry but you obviously don't have a clue.

Mexicans are not uneducated bums as you seem to believe just are the Polish are not.

Mexicans are highly educated and frequently occupy positions in Construction, Mechanics, Agriculture, Landscaping, Trades such as carpentry or plumbing and various manual positions such as factories etc..

In a similar format, they often live many people to a single house (no rent costs) and avoid paying certain taxes (vehicle tax for example).

They can therefore undercut the native population.

News / Nazism in Poland - A recipe for mass suicide? [176]

50 years ago, the Nazis were chasing after other Europeans and Jews.

Nowadays they are after the non-whites e.g Turks, Africans etc.

Russia has the most neo-nazis in the world

News / The Impact of Poland joining the EU [64]

HAHAHA, I'm laughing at the dummies who think Poland actually has a choice about joining the EU, as if you some kind of world power or something. HAHAHA!

If you dislike it so much, why don't you just leave both the EU & NATO, infact leave the UN also, then we can just leave leave Germany and Russia invade you again.

Don't want to? No, I didn't think so.

Like it or not, Poland is in the EU and here to stay.
I hope ordinary Poles are not offended by my statements, but there are of course bigots in every country including my own and sometimes you have to be blunt with these people.

Since I started going to Poland when I met my future wife 3 years ago, I hardly recognize the country today, apart from the same drastic toilets in Warsaw Train station. [:)]

I'm generally in WielkoPolska, and the improvements I've seen shock me, particularily in terms of Infrastructure, size of houses and cars.

Even Ireland didn't change that fast and Ireland has always been the EUs best pupil.

By the way, there are big changes on the way in Poland. Ireland's misfortune is Poland's fortune, we are currently losing many jobs in our IT sector to Poland.

Banta Global Turnkey and a number of big organisations have already left Ireland.
Dell will be leaving Ireland for Poland soon.
There are talks about EMC and Intel leaving Ireland within the next 12months.

The Irish IT market is going to be decimated, unless the Irish people decide to go back the the United States, you may very well find there will be a lot of Irish people working in Poland as contractors in the IT industry.

UK, Ireland / Polish economy threatens UK [17]

Quoting: asiia
goes to work to the uk/italy/germany and when they come back to poland they spend the money in poland a not in the countries they have earned the money

...and so the European Union was born.

Irish did it for a long time before the European union was even conceived.
Its not a shortcoming, the contrary in fact,

UK, Ireland / Polish economy threatens UK [17]

First, I don't believe it

Second, I don't blame the Polish workers if they decide not to take this terrible job

Third, there are plenty of Romanians and Bulgarians who would be willing to do it I'm sure.
