History / Identify medal from Austrian area of Poland [36]

I can see some sort of ghost image... the numbers 1 and 2 on the left hand-side of the medal.

Scan the picture again, but this time change the contrast. It might bring out hidden details. Do one brighter and one darker.

History / Identify medal from Austrian area of Poland [36]

check: Austrian Franz Joseph I [medal]

A good place to look is E-bay. But be careful what you put in the search box or it will take forever

History / Identify medal from Austrian area of Poland [36]

You might narrow it down by checking the guys badges of rank and then find out what that particular rank qualified for.

When you find out what medal it is... check when it was issued and that will help you determine the age of the person. If you have other details too.

The ribbon might be white, but I think it's more likely yellow.

Find out what actions took place... in the time frame.

It might not be Austrian... so double check.

Not all medals were for valour. It might be simply to recognize the new Emperor.

Lots to think about. The full photo might reveal more clues.

News / Earth Hour - possible in Poland? [62]

maybe because people think about that same as you .... maybe if they'd think it's a good idea and actually got involved, we'd see some effects in the future...

And maybe I'm already aware. It's this particular idea that I think is ridiculous.

Genealogy / Death Certificates best bet for genealogy search?? [10]

I have been ordering death certificates for ancestors in order to gain information on whom their parents were.

I don't know what is listed on a Polish death certifcate. But you will not find parents listed on an English death certificate.

Find a web-site or book that explains exactly what is recorded on a birth, marriage, death certificate.

Remember that over the years the format of these certificates may have changed.

Also, keep in mind that certificates, for example, in England have only been in use for about 150 years. Certified copies from a church book are different.

Church records. In which country ?

Travel / Good places (romantic too) to go in Wroclaw [14]

Ostrów Tumski is the park around or next to the cathedral?

Ostrow Tumski was an island. The cathedral and a few other churches are lit up at night. It does look quite nice.

Love / what is reasonable - he does not want me to go back to poland [55]

dont care any more-if he is and i decide to visit him when i am in poland-then if he is guess he has a lot of explaining to do to his misses-about his english friend!

He doesn't have to explain anything. He will probably slam the door in your face.
If his 'girlfriend' answers the door, he will stand by her. He will lose face in front of his family otherwise.
If you make an appointment to meet him. He probably won't turn up. If he does, he'll be full of shite.

Most of us have told you exactly what would happen. And for the most part we were right.
Why do you continue to make life difficult for yourself ?
We understand your plight and want the best for you. Please, understand this and forget him.

UK, Ireland / The best place to buy a house in the UK [120]

Well the moderator is still banging on about some property website or other, so you could be right.

Sometimes the mods let posters dig a hole for themselves before burying them.

However, 'Arise' is talking about a community, not particularly himself.

Feedback / CLOSING THE TRANSLATION THREADS [55]

Thanks for the suggestion, but it would be like opening a Pandora box.

Admin, you are finding problems where there aren't any. All you have to do is help posters understand who to trust. None of those 'translators' would have moderator function.

UK, Ireland / The best place to buy a house in the UK [120]

I need some advices and opinions. Where can I start look for place for my own?

As a simple guide: London and the south are expensive.

North and north-east cheaper.

Take a look at the: Best county in UK thread.

Feedback / CLOSING THE TRANSLATION THREADS [55]

since we are having a lot of arguments in translation threads, why not close them once the translation is done????

Yes, but no.

Admin should name the translators he trusts and give those members a tag.

All he has to do is write 'Translator' under the date, on the right-hand side.

Then the OP shouldn't have any complaint and the forum keeps its reputation.

Australia / Polish postal services - parcel delay sent from Australia [13]

When the Polish postal staff see a foreign parcel with foreign stamps it might make them think of redelivering it to themselves! Sadly, it does happen.

I'm convinced it does. And a little too often for my liking.

Travel / Autokary from London (Heathrow) to Krakow or Rzeszow [12]

I was considering taking a coach bus as an alternative cheaper form of transportation, in addition to seeing Europe by road.

It's not worth it. You won't even notice which country you're in. Plus, it's a thirty hour trip, and a good deal of it will be at night.

If you do take the coach. Stops are every four hours... for about 15mins.
The last thing you want to do is lug luggage across London, wait for a bus and then put up with a cramped seat.
Don't forget: there is no left luggage office in London. So it might be a struggle.
Let the airline transfer you and your luggage.

Check: Naturalization Records

After this length of time, check death records.

It's possible that he moved to the USA.

He must be at least 70 years old. yes/no

Check with all other, known, living relatives.

Love / Polish-Islam Relationship Union [450]

lol I think this is texting type writing because alot of people have cell phones

No, it's because they don't wish to conform. Most phones have T9 predictive text, which is quicker than SMS text.

Travel / Tips for driving in Polish cities [29]

Will be in Wroclaw again in April and this time hiring a car.

Friday is not a Good day for cars in Wroclaw. I think it's because of students going home for the weekend. Mornings 8 - 10am not good. 2 - 4pm not good.

There are constant roadworks in Wroclaw and sometimes you will find that a road that was open yesterday is closed today.

In the city be careful with people changing lanes.

Plan your route and you'll be OK.

Most important. Be on the lookout for trams. If you hit one it will be your fault [usually] And make sure you stop, if you are in the inside lane and the tram stops at a tram stop,

Travel / Poland is becoming too expensive to visit. It is a nice country, but [46]

Rubbish! A return train ticket from Warsaw to Krakow is 99zl if you use the cheapest PKP option which can be bought at the time of travel. That's a superb deal. Try taking a three hour train ride in the UK and see what it costs you.

The price might be low because of competition. On some routes it's quicker to take the bus.

A three hour train journey in the UK would take me twice the distance as a three hour journey in Poland. [On particular services]
