Szarlotka - the same - I don't even want to go onto details with this guy. He probably secretly knitts socks for his eastern european trips.

I've been sussed out. Be nice to me newbies and I'll knit some for you - all in lime green with vivid pink bunny rabbits on

UK, Ireland / Travelling to Sopot, via London....anyone want to get together? [83]

I would be pleased to meet up for a small cocktail or two. I'm away myself when you arrive in London but should be around when you are on the way back from PL. Course this depends on my work schedule in Ukraine but I am back at weekends, have to spend Mondays at the old job here and can always extend time in UK to include at least Tuesdays

UK, Ireland / Flooding in Northern England [74]

A month's worth of rain in a day. At least three dead. Threat of a 35 acre reservior bursting through a suspect dam. Huge destruction of property. It's quite serious. The only good news is that Sheffield may have to be knocked down and rebuilt.... (Yes I'm being facetious but it is a dump)

Bad news is one of the flooded properties is soon to be occupied by one of the SZ clan when he goes back to uni next term

Travel / Changing Poland [75]

It is being built with british money being pumped into the polish economy by polish immigrants in the uk.

I know of one shopping mall/ office complex that was built in Warsaw that was paid for in cash in Deutchmarks just before the Euro was introduced. Not that I'm suggesting there was anything suspicious about this of course.

Yep, us Brits are paying for everything in Poland, either in used ten pound notes or indirectly via subsidising the EU. Have a look at the inward investment figures published by the IMF to find out who really is paying mate and stop feeling sorry for yourself.

Travel / WhizAir - is it a good airline (Katowice-London)? [16]

The reason I ask is because the prices seem to good to be true. Anyone who has used WizzAir! or knows someone who has that might be able to give me some info, it would be appreciated.

Wizzair is a low cost, no frills airline. Like all of them the earlier you book the cheaper the prices. I've used them a number of times and never had a problem. I think at the moment they have no plans to charge for hold baggage unlike companies like RyanAir who are doing so, As with all low cost airlines the chance you take is the realtive lack of aircraft and their aggressive turn round times. If a plane has a technical fault you will run the risk of heavy delays.

Travel / Polish Airports and Air industry are pathetic [32]

Oh come on guys, Warsaw airport is not that bad. For the best part of fifteen years San Francisco airport was a tip as the city authorities fought over the funding of its redevelopment. I haven't been there for four or five years so it may still be a tip.

Warsaw is moving in the right direction, just give it some time.

News / Secret CIA Prisons in Poland [54]

I think he is just misunderstood. He probably had a hard time with US Immigration at JFK once. Really he loves all Americans and drives a Cadillac. Just hope he doesn't eat apple pie

UK, Ireland / Reasonable to move from Leeds to London? [10]

As a rough rule of thumb you are going to need your gross salary to go up around 30% to make the move to London worthwhile. (this assumes you don't plan to buy a place to live down here or that you want to rent a place of your own in the centre. If you do then 30% isn't going to be enough) On the plus side the opportunities to move jobs quickly to progress further are probably greater in London. Obviously this depends upon the sort of work that you do so it's a bit of a generalisation.

UK, Ireland / Telephone Help - trouble making a call from Poland to the UK [5]

No problem. Thinking about your second question I had assumed you meant Poilsh mobile to Polish mobile. Obvioulsy if you were dialling an international mobile you would still need to use the international prefix eg +44 if you were dialling a UK mobile

UK, Ireland / Telephone Help - trouble making a call from Poland to the UK [5]

The question is, what are the codes used to make international call to the UK from Poland? that is from a land line.

The international dialling code is 0044. You must also drop the leading 0 from the town code of the Uk number. So to call a number that is 01908 777777 in the Uk you would dial 00441908 777777 from Poland.

Next, when I go to Poland later this year, do I need to use any prefixes before the number to call mobile to mobile ?

No

UK, Ireland / Heading to London.Whats there to see? [45]

i could only imagine what something like football jersey

They retail at around £40 for the bigger clubs.

I have a New York State driver license, will i be able to drive with this in London if i was to rent a car?

Yes. but to be honest I wouldn't bother driving in London. Public transport is still pretty good and the roads in London are very busy. Not to mention that parking costs are very high too. If you plan to stay only in London, don't bother with a car.

Life / Can I transfer my current mobile number to a local Polish provider? [6]

It's impossible to transfer a number from one country to another.

Correct. Also the fact that different countries use different options for implementation of Mobile Number Portability (there are actually four different techncial methods) means it will likely never happen. Also the take up of MNP is actually very low within even the most developed mobile markets. I know you can have your 'old' number calls diverted to you new number but it is expensive as you have two contracts to pay for and the 'old' number calls get hammered by roaming charges which as we all know are very high indeed. Bottom line - get a new local number and transfer all the names.

UK, Ireland / How expensive is living in UK/London for one person? [23]

Hi - the web site linked beow provides basic cost of living guidelines for London. I presume you have looked into our tax system and know roughly how much of your proposed salary will be taken away from you. If not let me know and I can work the numbers for you. IT market in the UK is pretty good at the moment so if you have the right skills you should be fine. Best of luck

UK, Ireland / Anybody knows how to watch Polish channels in UK? [36]

HELP!!!!!!!!

Get satellite and watch Polish programmes or find some of them on the web. Have to agree with you on the decline in quality of UK TV though. Still there is an off button and there are always DVDs, music and reading.....

Life / Jaywalking in Poland ? [38]

I got fined for jaywalking across an empty road within 2 days of arriving in Warsaw. I didn't know it was illegal. Never seen a fine processed so fast. 200ZL handed over, no receipt and a friendly wave goodbye from the policeman. Not that I'm suspicious....

Law / What do Poles think of Chinese products? [49]

What's wrong with that?

How about a lot of corporate firewalls blocking the use of hotmail to stop their employees spending all day nattering to their mates. Maybe not where you are but in a lot of UK comapnies you cannot get out! Plus it's not perceived as being vet professional over here.

Tally Ho old bean. No fun really. All you have to do is leave a cheap 9 carat gold bracelet on the pavement and hide around the corner with a shotgun to get a full bag in minutes.

News / Some Poles burning American flag [299]

THEY DO IN ENGLAND

But mainly for big sporting occasions, like the world cups for football or rugby, which is a bit different. And it's not the Union flag but the Cross of St George. (ie English flag and not British). It's only in the last 6 or 7 years that this has happened. All of a sudden it's started to become fashionable to be proud to be English again. Maybe it was a reaction to the increasing independence of Scotland & Wales. Anyway we don't getting many people displaying the flag all of the time like in the US.
