Life / 'The Pianist' - the movie. What's your opinion? Polanski [59]

It's a sing of compassion, opposed to encouraging kids to risk their lives in order to write some sign on a wall.

That is actually a big part of Polish history - trying to survive as a nation with its own culture and language. Polish language and culture were systematically destroyed for most the last 200+ years and you have a nerve to make such a comment?

I find your comment surprising, if not repulsive, especially that you appear to be a Pole, and you chose a nick-name that is a part of culture that was destined to be completely destroyed. Why don't you pick a nick such as Holda or Maria Morevna.

Those writings on the wall were more important in the survival of that culture than, it appears, you will ever be able to understand.

Language / Madralo - is it insulting? [16]

Also.. it can be used but not well educated person who just doesn't know that it should be 'anglik'.

Angol was used on a daily basis by English Philology students in Poland. Hardly uneducated people.

Work / praca magisterska (master's degree) - any impact on career in Poland [13]

Most Polish qualifications are not recognized in the West except for Kraków University and the Politechnic of Waszawa.

I studied in Wroclaw and Zielona Gora. I was admitted to Vanderbilt (personal invitation of the then Chair of the English Department). I was also admitted to a Canadian University solely based on my Polish academic curriculum. In a way you are right though. I didn't have my M.A. then. I was a 3rd year student of English in Wroclaw.

When I studied computer science in Canada, two of my profs were Poles, with very thick accent actually. One was from U of Warsaw, the other from Silesian University. Both highly regarded, and both taught the toughest of the courses and were the most demanding among the staff.

A friend of mine (U of Wroclaw) was admitted to doctoral studies at Fordham University. He teaches English lit. at UCLA.

Another buddy of mine (U of Wroclaw) didn't suffer any rejections because of his M.A. being from a Polish university.

I also knew two American citizens who studied medicine in the Wroclaw Medical Academy. One is a family doctor in L.A., CA, the other is a surgeon in Chicago, IL.

There is more, but that would reveal too much about myself.

In England there are loads of so called educated Poles who are sweeping the streets.

Interesting.
This friend of mine (M.A. from U of Warsaw) teaches advanced topic in Japanese language semmantics in a British University.

In other words, irishborn, go ahead. Poland's academic standards may vary, but based on what I read from Michal, they are much higher than what he experienced in Moscow.

News / "EU Politicians Angered By Polish Chemical Castration Plan" [45]

Unfortunately the tracking idea would need a big change of law in Poland, due to very strong privacy laws.

Change would not have to be big. We're talking only about pedophiles here.

Newspapers can't even print the surnames of people convicted - they can only say, for example Jan K, or ks Piotr Z.

Really? So who is Andrzej Samson or Wojciech Krollop?

History / Responsibility for Murder of Catholic Poles during WWII ? [172]

In this case, this is not important what you think. This is important how they considered themselves.

Most considered themselves Jewish, not Polish. As per Czeslaw Milosz's memoirs most Jews in Poland didn't even speak Polish.

News / Why the American economy is not going to fail - take a lesson from Poland [48]

hy do you say Americans are greedy, they give per capital more than almost any other country.

No, they don't.
Per capita, among the so called rich countries, the US is close to the bottom of the list. Only Italy and Spain give less. Denmark gives about 5 times as much as the US, Norway nearly 8 times more.

News / Why the American economy is not going to fail - take a lesson from Poland [48]

Dunno about everybody, but to me the failure is clear. The much touted "free market economy" and the slogan that governments should stay out of economy as it will (allegedly) take care of itself, is pretty much gone down the tubes. Those who are usually first to make such claims are exactly the ones who now want the government to intervene, and subsidize failed policies and decisions of some big corporations.

In short, the failure appears to be in the basic premise and principles of the so called free market economy followed by the US. It is not working. It needs subsidies.

Life / 'The Pianist' - the movie. What's your opinion? Polanski [59]

Except for the woman on the stairs, it didn't show anti-semites. So you came out looking pretty good.

i would rather see Jews fighting in the ghetto uprising.

That "looking good" thing happens all the time. It also happened in the Warsaw Ghetto where the Jewish elite did not look good. Not good at all. While indeed, Germans created the Ghetto, the direct impulse for the uprising where the attorcities of some Jewish elders within the Ghetto against their own people.

So when you would like to see a movie about the Jewish uprising, watch what you wish for. It might, just might, be made by someone wishing to show the truth - brother against brother.

News / Eat fish you idiot! (EU massive media campaign in Poland) [54]

No.It is not the same condition.Too much water leads to hyponatremia and brain herniation.Too few water leads to hypernatremia and pontine myelinolysis.

True my statement was not precise. All these conditions are caused by electrolytes disturbances. Just like in hyperhydration, even though the actual chemical and physical processes may be different, and they may be slight difference in symptoms.

Bottom line, neither too much water nor too little is good.

News / Eat fish you idiot! (EU massive media campaign in Poland) [54]

Also Polish institute of Adam Smith published some time ago some report (?) that we have four time more bureaucrats than in 1989.

That's great news. Four times more jobs in the sector than before!

I found Jaruzelski website with his speech where he claim that we have three times more bureaucrats than in 1989 and those additional are parasites.

Jaruzelski made a lot of speeches. I wouldn't put much weight on what he has to say. This particular parasite is history.

Paper is much cheaper than intensive TV and radio adverts.

No difference in PRL.
The point is that fishy stuff was there before EU and therefore nagging against EU based on some fishy stories is funny. A lot of nagging against it can be justified without resorting to the same stinky food that commies advertised as fgood for you.

Btw. even though I do not eat a lot of fish, it is in fact good for you, whether there are 4 times as many bureaucrats or not.

Well guess what, too much water is very bad for you.

True. Too much of anything is bad for you.

Some woman here in UK went on this 2.5 litres of water a day diet just to end up being brain damaged

2.5 liters?
Urban myth.
2.7 is an average daily requirement published by the US government agencies.
2.5 liters of water a day is about the minimum for a woman who weighs 100 puonds (45 kg), does not exercise and lives in a cool climate.

she collapsed cos it flushed out minerals from her body or something.

The conditon is called hyperhydration and it flushes no vitamins or minerals. It disturbs the balance of electrolytes. The same condition may occur if a person drinks too little water.

When drinking water, hyperhydration may occur when a person drinks in excess of 8 liters of water in a matter of minutes. The same 8 liters spread over an entire day will cause no adverse effects in an otherwise healthy adult. OK, maybe one adverse effect. But beer causes that too and it is no secret that many drink way more than 2.5 liters of beer (mostly water) in an evening.

I care less what was practiced in the past.

but the past shows things can get fishy with or without EU.

If you wanted to proof that bureaucracy in communist Poland was much smaller, indeed this is true, statistics don't lie.

show me the stats then

If you wanted to proof that commies wasted less taxpayer money on the same cause then indeed this is true.

I'm not sure what you tried to say here.

News / Eat fish you idiot! (EU massive media campaign in Poland) [54]

I'm really tired with the EU massive media campaign telling us to eat fish...

I must write that this campaign is supposed to be the EU help to fishery.

This is clearly disgusting propaganda which have nothing to do with the EU role in this industry. People are targeted from all directions how great and helpful EU-bureaucrats are but they never provide any details. What is irritating, this farce is sponsored by European taxpayers.

I think you're looking for a problem where there isn't one.

In the 70's, long before even the bravest minds would dream about Poland in EU, Polish ministries of health and education distributed free bookmarks distributed to all kids. The Bookmarks had a picture if fish on it and the writing said:

"Masz klopoty z matematyka?
Jedz ryby!"

"Problems with math?
Eat fish!"

Poland wasn't any less catholic then, than it is now.

Love / Polish men vs German men: Who is hotter? [513]

Polish men vs german men:Who is hotter?

The easiest way to establish that is to get the stats on the use of antiperspirants per capita in both countries. The use of air conditioning and other cooling devices as well as consumption of ice cream might be also good indicators.

USA, Canada / Why are the tickets to Poland from the US so expensive? [7]

No matter when I looked the tickets are $1,000 I need to go but can't afford the ticket!

Depending on where in Poland your destination is, you may fly to Berlin or Prague. Much cheaper and less border control hassle. I never fly to Warsaw

News / Anti-missiles in Poland only 5km from the city [3]

Tomash Hypki, in turn, has informed that the decision to place base anti-missiles all in 5 km from the city of Slupska where live nearby 100 thousand people, is erroneous

There were Soviet installations in and around Wroclaw, Szczecin and Zielona Gora. The combined population of these areas was roughly 1 million. I wonder if Mr Hypki made comments about it then.

When Poland was a slave member of the Warsaw Pact, which was supposedly to its benefit, the Pact's plan to defend itself from any possible attack by NATO was to nuke Poland on the Vistula line. This would have contaminated the soil, water and air with nuclear pollution, killing some 10 to 15 million Poles in the process. That's how safe Poland was without US missiles in Poland.

"Anywhere in the world objects of such type have no near to settlements. Americans have placed them with themselves on Alaska and in desert", — has emphasized Hypki.

Europe is not anywhere in the world. Population density is simply higher than in Alaska.

News / Has there ever been gold found in Poland? [21]

There are a few places of interest and museums around Zlotoryja which have to do with mining gold (the region is sometimes referred to as Kotlina Klodzka).

An interesting detail they told us in a gold mine museum was that the miners practiced a peculiar kind of competition - they ate arsenic.

It turns out arsenic usually accompanies gold deposits so miners in the old times, having no breathing protection of any kind, had been exposed to it in the form of molecules they breathed in with air. Eventually they acquired various degrees of tolerance to arsenic so they could actually swallow small quantities without being poisoned to death. Small by their standards but many times more that it would take to kill any of us. The usual quantity of arsenic the competitors ate was about the size of a large table spoon. This quantity would be probably enough to kill all active and some inactive members of PF ;)

News / Poland boycotts German goods? [266]

I am effective, Szczecin is a German town and therefore it was a German product.

You certainly are effective in proving you have no understanding of words you use. Szczecin may be a German product, but not the soil in Szczecin, you dumbass
