News / Satellite Pics in Poland [11]

Here you go. Switch to satelita zoom in on the area of the city you are interested in.

Thanks, but they are pretty blurry on that one too. Lublin looks pretty good but for some reason Lubin has no decent sat pics. Thanks for going to the trouble of posting that link though. It will definitely be of help with other things.

Life / First Racial Attack for me in Poland [158]

Diazepam
To be honest in Polska you are much more likely to be killed whilst driving than stabbed or beaten to death on the street.

Glad to hear it! I hope to travel to Poland soon...............

You misunderstand. It is very likely you'll be killed whilst driving...

Life / People with Down Syndrome/Mental disability in Poland [26]

He said he found it strange that there were many people with Down Syndrome or learning disabilities in the UK and that you don't see many in Poland!

They're all working in the Visa office.

Life / Well You visited and/or lived in Poland, tell us what its like. [41]

I'm from the South. I did notice that, but for every person that gave me one of those looks there was someone else who smiled. Even my gf's parents warmed up to me.

I'd like to revise my previous answer. People that I'm formally introduced to are pretty nice. People on the street or in the shops act like I'm a potential child molester.

Customer service is non-existent and it seems like smiling is against the law (in the city).

News / Satellite Pics in Poland [11]

Hi there. Can anyone tell me where one could find decent satellite pics of Poland? Google Earth and other mapsites have terrible (blurry) coverage in the Lubin area.

Life / Opening a savings accounts in a Polish bank [27]

I assume dheva meant to withdraw money in your own country (in your currency) and to exchange that at a kantor's in Poland. As far as I have experienced, this way you get the best rate.

Thanks.

Life / Opening a savings accounts in a Polish bank [27]

I was thinking of keeping my cash in my US account. Now I'm trying to figure out the best/cheapest way to change it to zloty when I need it. Someone told me the cheapest exchange rate was through the ATM, but I don't know. Any tips?

Life / "3 Year Tattoo" in Poland? [13]

Screw temporary, what are real tat parlors like in Poland? I'm definately not done with tattoos but feel wary of getting one in a country I'm still learning about.

Life / Well You visited and/or lived in Poland, tell us what its like. [41]

I was in a small village near Lubin/Wroclaw and traveled around Lower Silesia.

Likes: Castles (Grodziec, Bolkow), mountains (Sleza & Karpacz!), beer, Czech Movie Pub in Wroclaw, the retro commie joint in Wroclaw, beer, bigos, weather, the small village I stayed in, honey vodka, the mead...

Dislikes: grafitti (used to it though), driving, that "l" with the line through it, couldn't find grits, the attitude of the cashiers at Tesco, the way gas station attendants eye-balled me...

Overall Poland rocked so much that I'm moving there next month. Need to find grits though.

I think someone from a southern state iin the united states would have a
harder time with the not so friendly folks

I'm from the South. I did notice that, but for every person that gave me one of those looks there was someone else who smiled. Even my gf's parents warmed up to me.

Travel / Mount Ślęża [3]

Thanks. Yes when I was there I definately felt the energy. It's a wonderful place indeed and I can't wait to go back. I went to Karpacz, Śnieżka, Wroclaw, Grodziec, etc. and Ślęża was my favorite. I'm looking for any information I can get on it.

Travel / Have you ever been in Poland? [111]

I've been to Poland. I love it there and would very much like to move there if I can get the visa issue sorted (and find a job). That and learning more Polish, learning the laws, customs, etc.

Travel / Mount Ślęża [3]

Hello all. I was wondering if anyone could point me to any resources about Mount Ślęża. I'm interested mostly in the history of the area, the stone bear, the pre-Christan settlement, Ptolemy description of it as Asciburgius, etc. Preferably in English but Polish is ok as well, online or in print.

Thanks in advance.

Life / Try it - move to Poland! [33]

I moved from the UK for love five years ago ( although we knew each other for longer ) and have been happily married now for four years, so it can work. My Polish still isn't great, but I've had two decent jobs and now run my own company, so it is possible !Better to try, love and lose than regret it for ever in my opinion ;-)

Steve, your words are very positive and make me feel much better about my situation. I'm currently trying to get to Poland but am coming up against the regular hurdles (finding work, visas, etc).

Thanks for this thread, it made my day a bit brighter.

Life / What do Polish people think about Americans living in Poland? [48]

If you want to read up on it, try finding the Rochester University lecture series called "Images of America: Polish Perspectives on the US" to read online, featuring Heinrich Szlajfer. If you can't get access online, request info on the speakers or their books, or ask for transcripts of their speeches from RU.

Here you go. I think it's the same one.
