Life / City heating system, any ideas on how it works? [15]

even when not used? that makes 0 sense.

The opposite does apply, as you say, it is fully on when we don't want it on, to that degree.
The first thing is to change the windows to double glazed, then insulate the apartment block.
I had double glazes windows put into flats a few years ago and there were no thermostats, i.e. you could not regulate the temperature.

So in the midst of winter, about minus 15, I would have to open the windows because it was too hot!, the mind boggles.
The almighty administration has since put regulating thermostats on each rad, this is now common practice and should have been done with this gentleman's apartment, built in 2000.

There is a field covered in snow outside the front of my block, where you could clearly see where the hot water was coming from because it was not well insulated and melted the snow in a line.

It is wise to have a back up heating system, solar or a fire place.
Electric heating is obviously quite expensive, so solar can pay off in the long run.
Or a gas combi-boiler, if you have gas.

Life / City heating system, any ideas on how it works? [15]

some strange digital box bolted to the middle of it.

I don't know what that is.
Unless you have floor heating? in the bathroom for example, that could be electric and it heats and dries clothes very well.
But if it is city heating as you say, it is off.
Take a hot shower and have a nice hot cup of tea, it's your best bet tonight and in the morning buy an electric heater and a hot water bottle.

The state will provide you with what you need not with what you want.

Yes.

People think it is great but I don't, as your predicament shows.
And in winter it will get too hot, so you'll have to open up the windows.
Although I should not really say that, it does depend on what year your apartment was built?
Do you have thermostats on each radiator and do you have a clock showing how much heating you use for just your apartment?. If you do it should be near where you can see the pipes coming in.

Any ideas how this system works?

Heating season is over.

Buy an electric radiator, have a hot shower and a hot cup of tee.

You have to insert a coin...

I have never heard about for heating? electricity ok but not heating.

Travel / Paris to Lublin [6]

The fastest cheapest way, is to fly both ways.
Sometimes a return ticket can be cheaper than a one-way ticket but usually they are the same price (believe it or not).
But I like traveling by train, but it takes a long time and obviously time is issue.

News / Does Poland count in Europe or is it ignored? [427]

I don't like the non-unified (E.U.) way we are when dealing with Russian Gas.

You would never walk into a company wanting to buy something and them to start fighting amongst themselves.

But I remember when Ireland joined the E.U., it did not make much of an impact until we changed to Euro currency and it became part of daily life, then came the huge amount of road works and other infrastructure being built and we knew something was happening.

Look around Poland, huge changes are happening with E.U. aid and it is fantastic for the country.
Poland has been fighting for basic freedom for a long time, I don't think it should stop but perhaps calm down a bit?.

News / EU elections in Poland: excuses for not voting please [43]

bit late for that now.

Yes it is.

only 303 of us foreigners bothered to even register....

And how many understand Polish well enough to comprehend what the parties are doing?.
My Polish is no where near that good, although I am learning.

So Harry, just so I never get it wrong again, which nationality do you affiliate yourself with, if any?.

News / EU elections in Poland: excuses for not voting please [43]

regardless of what the bigots at the current affairs forum here say, I'm not Australian

As an Australian citizen (although not one who would describe himself as Australian, my having Australian citizenship is purely an accident of birth)

Sorry, I thought you were but you are only a citizen of that nation, an accident of birth.

Did you vote?

No I did not.
In Ireland the voting was yesterday.
I don't understand political issues here and my country has changed too much for me to know what direction it should be headed in.

We were talking about this on another thread.

he's black, gay & not Catholic

Is that why you voted for him?.
It strikes me that of all the possible things you could have informed us about the guy, his great leadership qualities, his impeccable moral code or his programs.

It is this you write about, him being black, gay & not Catholic that you chose to tell us about.

Love / Whose Life is it? Polish girlfriend under family "house arrest" [224]

I suggest you go over there and knock 10 bails of **** out of him for being such a provactive,

Then you become the provocator, no better than him.

The lights are on but nobody's home

That comes across loud and clear from what you have written.

He trys to provoke a reaction from me.

Obviously.
Some severe mental deficiency on his behalf.

We will wait as long as it takes for the dust to settle. Not easy but we will be together.

Good for you and best of luck.

I didn't mean to pry, I was just looking through threads, catching up and got a bit curious.

Travel / Information Needed About Holocaust Related Travel: Krakow, Lublin, Warsaw [25]

most high school kids go on a trip to Poland in grade 11 or 12

I never knew that, I mean I have seen groups of young Jewish tourists around Krakow but I did not know that it was most kids who came here.

going to see historic poland from a jewish perspective not modern poland.

I have to say for myself personally I did it the other way round.
I wanted to see modern Poland and only now am I looking into it's deep and sometimes very dark history.
I still have never been to Auschwitz, for example.
I have been to other such horrendous places in other countries but not here, not yet.

There's a Poland-Israel cultural event going on this year,

You must let us know if you go.

USA, Canada / WIKIPEDIA'S POLISH-AMERICAN ENTRY [10]

Good choice of topic.
It will be interesting to hear what our American cousins think.

Lopata (1976) argues that Poles differed from most ethnics in America, in several ways. First, they did not plan to remain permanently and become "Americanized." Instead, they came temporarily, to earn money, invest, and wait for the right opportunity to return. Their intention was to ensure for themselves a desirable social status in the old world. However, many of the temporary migrants had decided to become permanent Americans.

I think this was the case with many other immigrants, longing for a chance to return home.

In a somewhat related theme Polish American Journal.

If you focus only on the camps, your trip will be very depressing and you will be burnt out after a few days. If you're interested in the Poland that your Jewish ancestors emigrated from

Excellent suggestion!.

Thanks for the sarcasm.

this is the internet, expect smart arses

so I can come to grips with some emotions and lingering feelings I have had.

What emotions and feelings are they?.

Do you know what I think would be really interesting.
If you were to keep a journal on here about your trip.
To start it now, about what you think and how you feel about what you have learnt and what you have heard.
And about your concerns and rapacious interest about what you expect.
I know you suggested coming back to this forum upon your return with a report about your travels but it would be more interesting if we could go on this trip with you, if you know what I mean?.

I get the impression that history has been a little rewritten in the U.S. about the holocaust, of course i could be wrong, so it would be good if we could dispel some myths.

Travel / Information Needed About Holocaust Related Travel: Krakow, Lublin, Warsaw [25]

What are driving conditions like? How are the roads? Are petrol stations easily available? Any tips I should know about? How is driving after dark? Are the roads around Lublin OK?

I don't know about Lublin but most main roads throughout Poland are under construction, E.U. gives a lot of money towards infrastructure.

Are supermarkets widely available?

Yes

I am diabetic

I cannot honestly help you there.

walk with a cane

No problems there, as far as I know.

I collect militaria. Is there any place (shop, flea market, etc) that you can recommend where I can find older military items?

"Antyki", Antique shops are you best bet, you will love some of the really interesting stuff they have here, it is paradise for someone who likes it.

am asking for clues how to travel, stay, eat, etc cheaply.

Try to stay just outside cities, it is cheaper to stay in the country and you should be able to drive in to the city if needs be.

Buy your food from the farmers market or green grocers, not the supermarkets.
It is cheaper and better quility from the farmers themselves.
These can be found in all towns.

I fully expect to come back to my students with rapacious stories of Poland and would love to have assistance in that.

I live near Krakow, here you have schindler's factory, the Jewish quarter, the Jewish Getto and of course Auschwitz.
When you come here I would be happy to help you out, if I can.
It is very important for people to know what happened, so it never repeats.
This will be an experience you will never forget.

Could you give me specific tips about these places? Places to stay, eat, shop for food, etc?

If you like I have a house 35km south of Krakow, you can stay for free.

Love / THE TYPICAL POLISH WOMAN? [148]

Unfortunately the anecdote stopped short of saying what would have been done in England, Ireland, Germany and elsewhere.

If there was only one orange

The Irish would think they were finally over the famine.
And would keep it thinking it would last forever,
and it would rot before anyone even had a chance to eat it.

Unfortunately the anecdote stopped short of saying what would have been done in England, Ireland, Germany and elsewhere.

The English and the Germans would take all the oranges from all of the other countries.

Love / Polish guy broke this black womans heart, now he wants me back....what do I do?? [27]

We had great S.E.X at the beg ....but about 4 mths later basically he couldn't "get it up"..

Jeez after having an erection for four months, it's no wonder he needed a break.

Is this the typical behaivour of polish guys

Absolutely
I heard of a fella here who had an erection for 7 years.

I am I being too hard on him, shld I forget him, was he using me, do you think he really loves me now, does he have an angenda, do you think it would have worked out?

You have already made up your mind, you think you might be too hard on him but that is called breaking up.
You think he was using you and that is enough.
I don't know if he loves you, I am not sure you love him?.
You think he has an agenda, trust is important in any relationship and money seems to be an issue for both of you.
It did not work, so you have answered that one yourself.

best of luck in your future love.
