Food / AMERICANO COFFEE IN POLAND? [14]

I don't know what do you mean by "Americano" coffe but here in the States we have a few different styles and ways to brew coffee.

Drip coffee - probably most popular, medium roasted, usually brewed with a "drip coffee maker". Is this what you mean by "Americano" coffee Polonus? BTW, a cup of drip coffee hes 2 times more caffeine then a shot of espresso.

Espresso - (not "expresso") - dark roasted, 2 oz. shots, popular in warmer weather states. You make latte out of espresso.

French press - Uses same type of coffee as in drip coffee, but uses a press system for brewing.

In some Arabic and Turkish restaurants you can buy Turkish Coffee, which is not filtered at all, light roast and fine grain. (nasty stuff!)

My kids don't speak any Polish, but that's mainly because my wife doesn't speak it. If they want to, they can learn it later, I don't care. The important luanguages to learn now are Spanish and Chinese.

The national currency of Poland is the litre (litr). It is produced in denominations of 100mL, 200mL, 355mL, 500mL, 1L and 0,7L. Unlike most other countries, polish money is not minted from metal or printed on paper, but rather is distributed in the form of the transparent liquid, described below. An exchange rate of roughly 8 euros for 1 litre is typically available. Litres are produced by many privately licensed foundries which are owned and strictly controlled by the aristocracy. Counterfeiting is rampant (particularly outside the major cities and in student dormitories) in Poland since litres can be distilled from rain or illegally drawn from rivers.

Well, unless I come across an opportunity (= a bigger and newer home) that is too good to pass, that is... :)

This is exactly what we decided to do. We moved from a house that was 1200 ft2 (~130 m2) into a newer house, 2300 ft2 (~250 m2) in a better neighborhood.

Right now, if you hunt around, you can find some dirt cheap prices, too good to pass.

For now I am not selling my old house though. Instead we decided to rent it out. I think I want to wait and see what happens in a couple of years, I may sell it then.

The other thing is, with the US Economy dependant on consumers, and so many of those consumers have lost their employment, it will take a while for the consumers to open the pocket books again. Everybody seems to be hell bent on debt reduction, not consumption.

Hey we are talking about the Good Ole' USA here, consumption is THE way of life here, Besides, we tend to have short memory too. I'm sorry what were we talking about? I forgot.

I wonder about your thoughts on the current real estate crisis, how does it effect traditional Polish neighborhoods, Polish Banks and other businesses etc.

I know a lot of "old" Polish neighborhoods were located in the blue-collar sections of towns, and I think they are especially badly hit by the crisis. I hear of people dumping their houses, simply walking away from them.

What do you do when the value of your house goes down by 25, 50, or even 75%? Wait it out? Dump the house? Or use it us a golden opportunity for an investment and buy, buy, buy?

Love / Why are Polish girls constantly ill? [166]

IMO it is a part of the Polish feminine culture to be slightly hypochondriac. Polish women are feminine in the "old fashion" way, and for many that means they have to pretend they are always sick (or they think they are).

By the "old fashion" feminine culture I mean Anna Karenina type of women, as opposed to the "new" Western feminine culture, like Charlies Angels type of women.

Also, being a hypochondriac is giving them a great excuse to constantly complain about something, also a part of the "old" Polish culture.

The crab sticks are from the Czech Republic.

I'm almost afraid to ask, but what type of crabs are we talking about here? Isn't Czech Republic a land-locked country? If it's not sea crabs, is it pu$$y crabs then?

Are you kidding? They already have potato pierogies in Polish cuisine, so sweet potato pierogies and yam pierogies only make sense. As a matter of fact, IMO sweet potato and yam pierogies would taste way better then regular potato.

Food / Is there any other Polish seafood exept herring and carp? [30]

Maybe I should explain first what I am trying to do here; I want to make a series of dishes which would combine both American and Polish cuisines. Just for shits and giggles. Maybe I would take some pictures and post'em here, maybe make a website. It could be fun, cooking is one of my hobbies anyways.

For now I have some Ideas:

polish ham and kielbasa jambalaya,
stuffed cabbage burger
a New England Chowder with polish seafood,
a Manhattan clam chowder with polish seafood,
Polish cutlet enchiladas
Sweet potato pierogies
Polish crapes with honey squash and pumpkin

Back to my "Polish/New England" chowder recipe.
I've been googling it a little bit and it looks like cod is pretty popular in Poland, which is great because I can easily get it in any grocery store in the US.

Salmon ?
An international salmon angling contest is regularly held on the Słupia river between Słupsk and Ustka.

I can also easily get salmon, and it tastes great in a clam chowder, but I don't think salmon is that popular in Poland. Or am I mistaken?

I'm thinking of cooking something similar to a New England chowder, but instead of clams I wanted to use some kind of a popular polish seafood. What should I use? I hate both herring and carp, they are truly disgusting. What other "Polish" seafood can I use in my chowder, any ideas?

Are clams a popular seafood in Poland?

Three Brothers in Plymouth MI, (commonly known as "Tree Brovers"). Not much of an "atmosphere" (don't expect candle lights or waiters in tuxedos). But DO expect some fantastic food, family friendly service with very affordable prices.

One bad thing about Three Brothers: sometimes you have to wait a little bit to get a seat, there maybe a line, the parking lot maybe full. But it's well worth the wait, that's for sure.

American light lagers (Miller Lite) have ~ 3.5% ABV
american lagers (Budweiser) ~ 4.5% ABV
american ales (Blue Moon, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale) ~5.5% ABV
barley wines (Bigfoot Ale, Olde School) ~ 9-12% ABV.

For comparison, Polish Lagers have about 4% ABV, up to 6% ABV with Baltic Porters.

Life / What is the nature of Polish people's hygiene? [76]

IMO personal hygiene has a lot to do with the standard of living. It's easy for me to take two showers a day if I have three bathrooms in my house. I also have a laundry room with a washer, a dryer etc, so it's easy for me two change my clothes at least once-twice a day.

From what I understand an average Polish family has one bathroom, in which they usually keep a mini-size washer, dryers are very rare.

So no wonder they don't take as many showers as we do and don't change their clothes as often. Isn't it pretty much the case with all the Europeans that they sort of slack in the hygiene department compared to the North Americans? Although I heard that Brits are way better in this then the French who are notorious for a bad personal hygiene (see Pepe Le Pew) :)

Merged: Pagan beliefs in ancient Poland

I've been reading a little bit lately about ancient believes in pre-Christian Europe, it's really fascinating stuff and to be honest some of those beliefs often make more sense then the dogma of Christianity. I'm talking here Celtic believes, Viking believes etc.

Unfortunately I can't find much info about the ancient Pagan believes in pre-Christian Poland. I mean, usually there is some mention of pre- Christian beliefs in the Slavic mythology and such, but not much and not in too many details.

What kind of a Pagan religion and mythology did ancient Poles use to believe in? And are there any books specifically on this subject?

I tried Sobieski, it was pretty good but it gave me a headache the next day. It's pretty cheap too, somethnig like $8 for a fifth. I think it's a rye vodka. On the label it said "Distilled Enough" LOL
