Food / How often do you have Polish Food? [49]

Quite true, PD. I can't remember the Lithuanian name, SeanBM will know (cepeliny or sth like that).

Goulash is seen as Hungarian across most of the world. Interesting you mentioned ravioli, M-G. It is translated in the local mountaineers restaurant as such. However, it is really not the same as the only commonality is the filled nature of it. Ravioli is smaller and has different fillings. Ask PD, Scots eat ravioli from tins (Heinz?).

Gulasz, leczo and bogracz are available at standard milk bars and also in jars in supermarkets through big-name labels like £owicz and Pudliszki.

I've only met a few who think that and they think so because it is "what Poles eat", LOL. As M-G said above, there is much adaptation. I don't find Polish food much different tbh. Even flaki is eaten elsewhere as tripe.

Look at Czech knedle, very similar. Look at Chinese dim-sum, very similar to pierogi. Lithuania also have sth like it.

History / Farewell of Slavianka - who is able to understand Poles ? [48]

Lesser, don't ignore the trappings of capitalism either. NYC PR firms gladly signed up to represent the cause of the Bosniaks, spearheaded by Allah Izetbegovic. Serbia could have played that game but didn't. They stuck with the truth. America does this, they finance both sides whether it be Iran Vs Iraq, Israel Vs Palestine or IRA Vs Britain. In my view, this is worse than what socialists do.

Gumishu, liberals like Fisk will write what they see and not take allegiances. Independent journalists can present the truth without significant bias. This is what we want, even if it yields 'undesirable results'. This is the opposite of the herding effect. It just leads to more questioning people who will pursue the truth.

Good point, Dice. Things which Poles consider to be solely Polish are, in fact, not. Potatoes are as much Irish+British as they are Polish. Soups are legendary in Scotland too. Bigos is hunter's stew, we have similar concoctions in Scotland. I guess in Ireland too. I had stuffed cabbage rolls (gołąbki) as cheap primary school canteen food. It isn't considered as a culinary delight by a far stretch in Scotland.

As for bogracz, leczo and Hungarian pancakes, well, they are not Polish. Pierogi/pyzy and barszcz are northern Slavic in general.

Then they are ignorant feckers. I saw only part of the devastation in Belgrade as major parts have been rebuilt.

I find it hard to believe that such BS could be written. What motives did those Polish journalists have to paint only one side of things? I don't get this. Then again, who are they in bed with? Those warmongers, the US and Britain.

You are getting into linguistics but in a foolish way, CK. He was born in Azerbaijan, not Russia. Georgia is not Russia. Chechnya is not Russia. Ukraine is not Russia. Start checking out maps, CK.

Food / Condensed Milk [13]

I loved sipping at that stuff. It has such a rich taste. I generally loved Nestle tinned cream when I was a kid. I didn't gain weight like I do now :)

Tesco should have sth good. The dairy section here in Gliwice is quite big. I think they may have what you are after.

Very similar but I'm not sure if there's any connection. What brand did you use back home, Cardno?

Food / Condensed Milk [13]

The good thing is that you can eliminate some of them like 'do kawy' or do 'do zupy'. Have a look round the delis, Cardno, they seem to have a few options. The evaporated stuff is a decent plan B.

Oh, also, look for Winiary products as they are an offshoot of Nestle here in Poland.

Look at prominent 'Russians', CK. Kasparov, an Azerbaijani by birth but with Armenian-Jewish roots. Jozef Dzhindhashvili, a Georgian and Fyodor Emelianenko, born in Ukraine :)

Should I be rummaging through the archives for some Baltic Russians? LOL ;)

History / The most influencial socialists leaders in Polish lands? [26]

I completely agree, lesser. It is merely licence for the government to carry out their wicked agendas to whatever degree they deem necessary. Constant intervention :(

Cynical is a compliment ;) ;) :)

CK is quite the character, ascribing new meanings to this and that ;)

I speak Scottish dialect and understand basic Gaelic greetings. However, we weren't given the option of Gaelic in school and I'm from the east coast where it isn't really spoken.

There is no widespread effort to suppress it. I don't think many Poles are that hard to understand.

Well, what would you say is in the Polish national interest, lesser? According to your conception of that term of course.

Collective security was 10 years ago and that's why, rightly or wrongly, Poland joined NATO. The rationale of the EU was also compelling but the national interest is really put to the sword in supranational institutions.

Sroka in Polish would be sb who steals from others. If an object is left lying, they will swipe it. That's what my Polish wife told me she understands by magpie.

Yes, and we have Great Britain and the United Kingdom :) You don't even have the Soviet Union, just Russia.

Your mighty country couldn't even take on tiny Chechnya, LOL. What's wrong with trade btw?

News / Poland's place in changing world order? [74]

That's nonsense, southern! Many Brits are not proud of the imperialistic pursuits of their forefathers. Don't confuse the gluttonous actions of rabid politicians with those that lived under them.

Poles have the same feelings in some measure but that doesn't reflect in the current government.

Not at all, CK. I believe that when you make profound statements, you should put some more flesh on the bones. Magpie? (sroka?) What do you mean? They have a skewed concept of virtues?

Always excessive? I know many moderate Poles. Shallow? In what way?

Don't expect them to be like us Scots ;) ;) ;)

That's him, I remember now. He inherited a bad situation. Surely Piłsudski would have passed on his fears for his beloved nation!? Surely he would have been monitoring the current affairs of the day and may well have averted disaster. By 1935, it wasn't really too late though it would've been an uphill struggle.

The big problem is that there was a lack of emphasis on modernisation. The question arises, was that complacence or lack of prioritisation on it?

Food / How often do you have Polish Food? [49]

Being in Poland, I have it fairly often but there is universal food which is the type I tend to eat, i.e potatoes and soups

However, Polish food is more suited towards winter so I will be eating more in the coming months.

Food / Condensed Milk [13]

The most famous brand is the blue one. One side is written in English and the other in Polish. It is evaporated, though, and that's the problem.

Try Gaa's suggestion.

Zagęszczone mleko I think. I bought some the other day for putting into coffee. It gives it a lovely texture.

Love / Help with a Polish girl -How do I know if she is "interested"? [41]

The question is, if she is indeed interested, then how long will she be interested for? Modern life sees people hopping from thing to thing and rarely do they stick to traditional hobbies like in the old days. Also, people are more upwardly mobile and you don't want to be just a fleeting moment in the life of sb, unless you like casual flings that is.

UK, Ireland / Polish Education Grading and Uk Edu. Grading? [73]

I think many people would struggle with CPE unless they have been exposed to living English. A lot of it is slang, idiomatic and replete with figurative expressions. It cannot be worked out by logic that often, sometimes you either know or you don't.

FCE and CAE show dedication and, in today's rat race, seeing out the course with a B is quite respectable and shows your staying power.
