UK, Ireland / Why do Poles come to England? [514]

Hearing England described as just a bailout option isn't nice. Some of my students have described it in that way. For the handouts? I don't know about that but for the salaries for sure.

If Poland is such a paradise then why are there not more smiling faces?

Food / Why did Taco Bell leave Poland? [82]

I hear ya, WB. It'd just be for a holiday so I wouldn't have enough time to grow bored of it. T-bone steak, that's worth scoping out. Yeah, I'd likely succumb to temptation too and pig out all too often.

Miami is top of the list. She's not a beach person so Sarasota and Daytona are off-limits. She just fell in love with some of the views. I hope she doesn't want an Everglades trip.

Food / Why did Taco Bell leave Poland? [82]

I'll make a mental note to get it :)

Gulf Grouper? I've never heard of that but I love seafood. Hiroshima is the seafood capital of Asia and I lived there for 15 months. Tasty! I love buffet deals too but I have to starve myself first.

I love rum though don't really drink it much. I used to drink Bacardi Spice way back in my uni days. They don't seem to have it here though they have a decent selection in bigger places.

Rum Runner, sounds good!

News / Anti-Polonism in Russian literature. [10]

Borrka, the differences between Prawosławny/Orthodox and Catholicism are not that great when cast alongside Islam and Hinduism, for example. I don't think religion played a major part. If it did, it would have been preferential treatment for one group at the expense of the other or some behind-the-scenes dealings by the Vatican.

The Russian elite saw the Polish elite as an emerging threat. That's why Katyń happened. They were singled out as those that could expose them and thus had to be dealt with.

Also, they can more freely distort history. Politicians have to be more tactful and can be hauled over the coals for tactlessness. They are much more in the public eye.

Please present some ideas and views of the abovementioned authors, Borrka. You are a well-read man so I assume that you can. What I tend to find is that Poles and Russians tend to look for messages which aren't really there. A neutral and disaffected reader won't look too much into it or for it. Some passages would be nice, thanks.

Food / Why did Taco Bell leave Poland? [82]

The Polish conception of an Italian restaurant is a pizzeria, LOL. Ah well, at least they understand 'al dente' pasta.

My wife wants to go to Florida one day so I have to save up for that. Being in the deep south, I guess they pretty much have the same stuff as in New Orleans. Is that right?

Habanero, top stuff! That'll clear your cold up, pronto! Cayenne peppers find pride of place in many culinary books. I got one for my wedding/birthday 3 weeks ago so I need to dip into it. I have food for the weekend so I'll wait for my wife to come back from her trip to Cyprus/Israel, then we can crack out the cayenne. She can make all sorts from spring rolls (sajgonki/harumaki) to nice sushi. That's just for starters!

Love / Why are Polish girls constantly ill? [166]

Polish women are the only women I know that actually pencil future illness into their diaries ;) ;) Sometimes a month in advance. The wróżki (fortune-tellers) must be good here.

I've just heard my neighbour say that she will be taking an L4 on Monday, hehehe.

Yeah, they are a big enough community for sure. The Poles have their delis back home and, I gather, do a roaring trade. I've found that many Poles think too much in terms of the exchange rate rather than real equivalent value. For example, a 6PLN jar of gołąbki will only be around 1.25 in Scotland, i.e real cheap. To me, 6PLN is more like 1.85.

Are you a fan of spicy food, sledz? I bought some samba oelek the other day. It's made in Thailand and is a very simple sauce. My wife also got hot Hungarian pepper powder in Hungary. I'd love a burrito or plate of enchiladas in which to use them :)

Ma and Pa places means local businesses I take it, right? They are often better right enough. I tried okonomiyaki from the large chain, Michan, but local places often offered better versions with more variety.

Mexicans can do much better, especially as they have all they need from US supermarkets.

Food / How often do you have Polish Food? [49]

Nah, Seanny, it's already dripping in fat but stranger things have happened. Some milk bars do pierogi that way but you can always pour it out if you don't like it.

Does NK have these options? ;)

If the cheese is stringy then I'm all for it. The meat must be good, though. No substitutes which can keep you on the toilet for the best part of a week.

That's the one, Seanny. A heart attack on a plate. They should aim it at the Scottish market, it'd go down well there ;)

RN, I can't imagine that that sausage served at footie stadiums is anything popular. If my memory serves me correctly, it was mainly hotdogs that were being served at Piast's stadium. The shorter, stubbier ones also. Do you mean parówki? I don't think you are describing frankfuterki (Frankfurters). I bought a good quality parówka once before a local footie match. Anything longer is generally classed as kiełbasy. Could you describe it more!? Almost everything is served with a chunk of bread and some mustard. Check Google Images for parówka, it is great when piping hot.

Polonia / Poles experience of india [30]

I've heard plenty experiences about Poles in India heading for the nearest toilet due to curry and sanitary conditions. The tour guide of the Baltic states+Finland tour wouldn't stop talking about her trip to India.

Love / Do not marry Polish woman [212]

The message should be, as always, choose carefully. I thought long and hard about it, or maybe my long and hard thing was thinking about it. Who knows ;)

Anyway, on a more serious note, establish the commonalities as early as possible and work on them as much as you can. Iron out the creases when you see them or, mark my words, you will see them again.

Genealogy / I'm Polish and Russian but there's drama.... [14]

You should be proud that you have a second heritage. Russian is such a cool language and being Russian is most definitely nothing to be ashamed of. The Ruskies are an interesting bunch!

UK, Ireland / Why do Poles come to England? [514]

I think the majority came for the money. What culture in England would really attract Poles?

Love / Do not marry Polish woman [212]

Yeah, the Jews have a different view towards sex than many Catholics. They see it as a natural giving of love and don't have the same hang-ups. Southern will be glad as Israeli girls are pretty hot :)

You just have to get on their right side and luck also plays its part. The rewards are pretty satisfying for staying 'onside' with them.

He likes to discuss his Catholic religion so let him explain what a Catholic is. I find many can't. They love the label but know not what it means.

Food / Why did Taco Bell leave Poland? [82]

The guy who liked them was from Cali. Americans like to name drop as to what they have. That's not a criticism at all.

Mexican would go down well back in Scotland but Indian curry and Chinese food are mainstays in my home city.

Taco Bell is a bit too spicy and flavoursome for many Poles. They prefer blander foods with less kick. They claim to like mustard but I wish I had taken some karashi Japanese mustard over. That makes Colmans appear mild.

Law / ZUS questions - maternity issues [7]

Geez, don't quote me on this but I think that they receive a one-off payment of 1000PLN from the state. She should still be entitled to this payment.

Food / Why did Taco Bell leave Poland? [82]

I remember the dialogue between Jules and Vincent in Pulp Fiction and them finding the whole idea of smearing mayo on fries disgusting.

America loves its chains and that can be good and bad. I don't know if it exists in Europe, probably not, but I've heard great things about Jack-in-the-box burgers. Do they only do burgers or do they do Mexican stuff?

Taco Bell was one brand I wanted to try but some give it a bad rap. I could make my own stuff as the deli has loads of good ingredients.

Yup, his chicken be flyin everywhitchaways ;) Am gonna get some ar in ma tar (air in my tyre, lol).

Mayo is probably from France. Americans took donuts and mayo from there.

Taco Bell couldn't match Subway in the UK.

I know a guy from Jawjaa but he doesn't have much of a drawl. He mocks them half of the time.

Food / Why did Taco Bell leave Poland? [82]

Yeah, I've been there a few times with my buddy from murder capital, Washington DC. He doesn't know what's more dangerous, the way Poles murder Mexican food or some of the pipe-hittin nigg*s in DC. Nah, seriously, he rates it reasonably though not a patch on big-city America.

Yeah, kick that sh*t to the kerb/curb. Propagating lies and bombarding people with them is just lame but money is spun that way.

I wonder what Shrubco has on his menu. Crawford req squirrel? Sewer rat? Who knows!

How typical of a redneck accent is that 40-second scene in Cool Hand Luke? I know it as it was superimposed onto Civil War by Guns&Roses.

She has plenty on the 9/11 thread. Mexican food has a place here although it will take time to catch on. Tex-Mex has more in common with Mexico, no sh*t Sherlock. Don't they eat rats and squirrels more down in Texas? I saw a video with Steve-O from Jackas* and he hurled after eating that nasty stuff.

Life / TESCO SUPERMARKETS IN POLAND. Where are they? [15]

There are 2 here in Gliwice, one big one and a small local one. Both are fairly well-stocked outfits and have many of the brand names from back home.

Food / How often do you have Polish Food? [49]

Another food that Poles sometimes claim as their own is herring though I gather that the Dutch eat it very often too. Herring is not particular to one localised part of water. We have it in Scotland but it's not overly popular.
