One or two people on the forum might be able to give advice, but you may have to wait a couple of days, as it is Christmas and many people are away.

She is very sick and has a "Canadian Power of Attorney".

Is it not possible for you to be given Power of Attorney ?

I have no idea of Canadian law. Just asking.

Life / Wigilia Greetings - When is the best time to send them? [11]

Purely out of interest, what is the earliest time PF members have started Wigilia supper?

young married couples might have to visit both sets of parents. So they will start late afternoon/early evening.

Some shopworkers are just getting home now. (Biedronka closed at 4:00pm)

The answer is: around four or five. (my guess)

Tradition says: when the first star appears in the sky.

Life / Dog's life or what to expect when living in Poland with a dog [22]

What are the general rules for dog owners there

Difficult to say. Each region goes through periods of enforcing rules in their own way.

leashing,

This depends on the breed and if the dog is wearing a muzzle or not.

picking after,

Wroclaw has recently installed orange bins/trash cans for such a purpose.

bringing to restaurants and stores.

Stores, maybe. Restaurants, I doubt it.

What about dogs on public transport - buses, trams, trains...

They will need a ticket too.

Wait for other thoughts.

Love / Ask for permission before marriage (I'm from England, she's from Poland) [25]

Hang on, who say's the father in law pays. Those days have gone as well.

Being traditional doesn't mean I will say no. I understand the modern world too.
I also understand that it's not me who's marrying the groom.

As for paying for the wedding. The one I attended this year was paid for by both sets of parents.

Life / POLES' ENGLISH COMPARED TO EUROPE AS A WHOLE? [39]

Magdalena,

I take your point completely.

I still think that, if lessons were better structured at the lower level, students would have a better attitude at the higher level.

Part of the problem in all this is the way parents push their kids to learn. I doubt many language schools would have so many pupils, if parents weren't paying for it. And then making sure that their children knew who was paying.

It seems that there might be a battle between pupil, teacher and parent.

I can't speak for all teachers, but some English Language Teachers in state schools are excellent, with natural ability and a way to effortlessly motivate.

I wonder if some parents realize that they are paying a languge school to cover the same material as a state school. And that pupils don't speak much in language schools unless they want to.

I could go on and on, but I'll save it.

Life / POLES' ENGLISH COMPARED TO EUROPE AS A WHOLE? [39]

I blame it on the way kids are being taught the language at high school here. There is just too big focus being made on grammar, with the time spent on conversations almost equal to zero.

This is an opinion that I share.

I'm not too keen on the fact that every school uses a different set book. The teacher chooses what's best. And I sometimes wonder who they are choosing the book for. Is it the students or themselves (the teachers)

Most English Language students I know have done well for themselves, but most of their advanced language skills come from a desire to do better.

There would be no need for many of the language schools, if more priority were given to school pupils.

Can someone tell me if, for example, Dutch pupils go trotting off for extra English lessons, in the numbers that they do in Poland.

Genealogy / DNA test, me, and finding Patricia Welker [6]

Welker appears mostly in German records. (Keep in mind - a foreign name does not always make you a foreign national)

Was this your mother's maiden name ?

Where do you think the Polish connection is ? Is it through your mother's mother ?

I'm afraid we need more information, if we are to help with your family tree.

Life / POLISH MORTAL SINS? [7]

[half-quote=Polonius3]
A lack of follow-through
Inability to cooperate with others
Emanating from the above are poor organisational skills and coordination, and worst of all:
distinterested envy
[/half-quote]

I think that this will show in any culture.

Most of the above seems to occur in business more than anything. But it's changing. Young folk are learning new busness practice and seem to be putting it to good use.

"inability to cooperate with others" New and old ideas, which come from different training methods.

Life / ANYONE OWN A POLISH DOG? [22]

Came complete with a Polish passport.

I've mentioned the doggie passport before. I think it's more about the inoculations than citizenship. The fact that the dog needs a passport does amuse people though.

Love / Polish Girlfriend gone missing [154]

Not much to add.

It is possible that she simply moved to a cheaper flat.

Didn't mention it to Ted because she was making a new start.

The family arguement is over exaggerated
...................................................................... ..........
No-one on the girlfriend's side seems to be telling the truth. A least they won't commit themselves to a yes or no. A reaction like this suggests: end of

If she went for a termination then the hospital visit would probably have been shorter.

She knows that you (Ted) are a determined person and she is just hoping that you will go away.

Do we know for sure that she has dropped out of school ?

For peace of mind I would give it another week. If there is no result. Give up.

Edit: Christmas is just around the corner, if you don't get a card or SMS then........

Life / Who brings presents in Radomsko or Poland in general? [7]

Most people these days will probably say Santa.

As the Star man, Angel and Santa all come through the window. You could leave a cryptic message. Something like: "You didn't leave the window open, so I had to leave your gift at the door". Then it covers any of them.

So you are not thinking of her future.

m_26,

I was going to write a long, level headed reply, but your post simply shows how stupid people can be.
No-one can force you to get married, but legal action can force you to pay for any child's upkeep.
Talk to her now, if you have any sense.

Genealogy / Looking for Pilecki's from,or around Gwoznica, or Rzeszow [3]

I think I found my Great-Aunts address. I don't speak, or write Polish.

Maybe send a Christmas card. That way you can write a short note for her to confirm if you are indeed related. It might help if you include an addressed, return envelope. Also include an e-mail address... then a younger English speaking member of the family or a friend of your Great-Aunt might reply.

A short note wouldn't be a problem for someone on the forum to translate.
Don't use an online dictionary-translator.

Have you checked the name and address in the phone book ? It might be easier to phone, but not always wiser.

Genealogy / My grandpa was from Poland - Gresom Jopfa [44]

The problem that you have now is that some of the place names are in German.

This is because of German occupation. The place names changed again after the war.

You need a map from about 1850... for German place names. And a modern map to compare what you find.

There are websites which have lists of Polish - German place names. You just have to find the list for the area you are researching.

As I understand the baptism: Gersom Jopfa was baptised at St. Gregory's church.

I'll get back to you in a while about the other places and names.

Szczecinek

Go to: pilot polska

It's a map. Enter szczecinek in the box marked Miejscowosc. Then press Pokaz

It's north-west Poland, near Germany.

Rather than look for an old village. It might be better to locate the church. It might be still standing.

Also, look for some old maps... pre war. They might have something too.

sw = saint. (St. Gregory) I think it relates to the church.

Check online for photos of the village. You might find something useful.

Do you need help to locate addresses of orphanages in the areas you mentioned ?
