Life / A trip to a Polish supermarket [136]

Men don't carry loose change? Hmm...curious

Just today I had the same and was cooperative. Good manners cost nothing as we say.

News / Is the E.U. good for Poland?? [180]

Needless to say, the E.U has a broad remit. There are certain areas that are rather onerous for those affected but the general consensus here seems to be that the EU has opened many doors. I'm not an ardent proponent of the EU but it has laudable intentions.

You have to ask key players in key industries.

News / Tusk's Proposal to Change Poland Constitution [27]

There were plenty models where a strong Presidency could serve as an effective counterbalance to the PM. However, power is apt to be abused and Kaczyński has seen fit to rather childishly veto Tusk at many turns. Again Wałęsa likely had a positive vision in mind.

Yeah, Belarus would be an attractive proposition but there are fundamental differences which Kaczyński, I'm sure, will be quick to labour. Not least, religion. Their faith, whilst adopting some of the dictates of Catholicism, has grassroots differences. Also, one of my students (Belorussian) notices many character differences. So, Tusk should focus on his remit, that of forging political ties.

News / England and Poland are friends [28]

Yeah, let's return to the thread. Prince, you are causing problems for members and your racism is not warranted. Try and play fair or face disciplinary action. Rules are rules, I will post them if you need a reminder.

Many Poles wear England shirts. Not through love of the country I presume, more for the love of sport. Many good relationships have been formed tho and we should be happy of that.

My ears betray me then. Maybe I should bring a tape recorder with me to let people hear how Jews are spoken of.

It seemed anti-semitic. If this is the culture we have to look forward to, God help us.

News / Tusk's Proposal to Change Poland Constitution [27]

Wałęsa can defend himself, he was operating in different times.

Tusk, to his credit, is not so anti-Russia or Germany. He realises the importance of not falling out with them.

UK, Ireland / Aberdeen's Polish Community [15]

Bedford is the main area then, near the University and St Machar Academy.

Tillydrone is on the other side of the drive, opposite St Machar Academy. Tedder Road is the entry point there. The road where I have been the most stoned ever. A loooooong time ago now tho.

I guess even Northfield and Mastrick would have Poles. Logie is also dirt cheap.

Some of the more affluent ones, well, they could be dispersed and anywhere really.

There is a Polish deli on George Street, near the Bon Accord Centre. It's a short walk from Bedford.

Genealogy / Trying to find friend (Lukasz Bezak) from Katowice [30]

I was joking, I don't see genocide with my own eyes but it does hurt to think what unspeakable horrors take place.

Yeah, I hear ya bro. Still, how do you know that the money you give to charity actually goes to charity? How do you know that your tax will not go on sth completely irrational and undemocratic? Funding warmongers is pretty serious stuff in itself.

There is a certain element of trust needed in many human relationships. Whether it be inherent or earned is another matter. You trust that you get paid, you trust that your partner isn't cheating etc etc. I had no evil intentions by helping Welshie. You go by what you read in this case, 'trying to find friend'. Much in the same way as I apologised to edward, he just wrote it in such a fashion that he was having a laugh. He told me that he wasn't so I offered my apology.

I have noticed that, whether it be translations or matters such as these, we are forever second guessing people. Context, mood etc etc. Hence my comment to others that a forum is ripe pickings for abuse and misunderstanding. Pawian agrees with me, teaching directly minimises the danger of this happening.

Let's try and give the benefit of the doubt once in a while :)

What the eye doesn't see, doesn't hurt you (does it?) (doesn't it?)

Seriously, this thread can be deleted, she got what she came for and can PM me if she needs any further assistance.

Part of the forum is people tracing, sth Wrocław likes.

Nicely done, pawian. We rarely know people's true agendas or ulterior motives.

This is a discussion, not a slugfest. Where is Sasha? He is a voice of reason.

News / Is the E.U. good for Poland?? [180]

The EU, I meant.

I remember watching the House of Commons debate on the ERM (as it was), in 1992 or so. John Major was involved in a big battle with Norman Lamont, then Chancellor of the Exchequer. This prompted a series of debates, not least into fudging of the convergence criteria and the single currency.

I'm sure Youtube has some stuff on it.

Prince is right, dialogue is critical. Russia shouldn't bite off more than it can chew. As one of your colleagues has commented, CK, most Russians don't think as hegemonically as you do. Thank Goodness!!

I really don't understand it, you guys are very powerful in all manner of ways. You have many political tools and levers at your disposal. Is it just Russian roulette that you risk losing it all for some extra piecemeal concessions? Be proud of what Putin has done for you.

News / All this mess about Danzig... [122]

Well, the Russians helped to take Britain out of its policy of splendid isolation, abandoned in 1902. I'm not sure if this was necessarily a good thing but it helped to bring about a reassessment of our global position.

I do see modern day Russia as a potential threat but I prefer to view its actions as counters to American ambitions. America, were it to be serious, would not idly stand by and let Russia support Iran and Venezuela. But we all know that the media doesn't paint the full picture. There are many deals done in smoke-filled rooms and with cash flashed.

Well, China is a different kettle of fish than Korea. They will not merely stand by and cede territory.

I keep making reference to Russian chess capabilities but it's useful here. However, the Chinese are getting better at this, they too are strong Grandmasters, they destroyed Scotland :(

You know what's at stake, CK, it is in your mutual interests to enter into bilateral agreements. Russia cannot afford to be complacent, the Chinese govt is crafty.

News / All this mess about Danzig... [122]

The life expectancy of the average Russian man is now 57, due to epidemic alcoholism (millions of Russian men drink a gallon of vodka a week), AIDS, and a fourth world health/medical system. Millions of Russian women are sterile because they've had so many abortions (the preferred Russian method of birth control).

In the Russian Far East, Russian women who still can have babies are marrying Chinese immigrant men - because they make so much better husbands. They are not drunk all the time, they're not beat-you-up abusive, they work hard, and they turn their paycheck over to their wives. This is a Russian women's marital paradise.

Care to explain, CK?

Borrka reminded me of this guy so I trawled the archives to find it.

This is an attempt at a discussion, CK. It doesn't necessarily represent my opinion. There are some rich Chinese and some poor, the same as Russia and virtually everywhere else.

This sounds like Jack Wheeler, Borrka. I've read some of his stuff. He has made the above point several times.

China contributed to its own downfall way back, by allowing lunacy to prevail. It subsequently rebuilt major parts of its economy but Siberia remains a hot potato.
