News / New York Post : "Polish" Death Camps and more [278]

Different name, same purpose - killing people.

wrong

there were no gas chambers or simmilar there

the deaths that took place there where because of: poor conditions, poor nutrition or bestiality of the staff - the case of £ambinowice is quite telling - after it turned out what was taking place there the command has been replaced

anyway the subject is of course a bit more complicated but I don't believe there has been any planned genocide taking place

News / 14 year old rape victim from Warsaw denied abortion! [348]

people - first of all the girl in question has not been subject to any form of rape

she had sex with her say boyfriend on her own consent (and as far as I can remember it took place on some trip organized by their parish)

were there any rape there would be investigation and conviction - there hasn't been any

Gazeta Wyborcza is actively promoting abortion on demand in that case using lies and manipulations

this is leaving the abortion dispute aside

Language / Things Polish people who speak English language say [180]

you see - wine is not the main ingredient in the sauce - it isn't in any that I know of - but I am no cook - this is why we say 'sos z winem' - were the focus a bit different or were wine the main ingredient 'sos z wina' would be a prefferable choice

the more obvious example is 'chleb z kminkiem' and 'chleb z kminku'

chleb z kminkiem - is bread with cumin

while chleb z kminku would be bread made of/with cumin

side note: I am pretty convinced what the English call cumin is not really the same thing as what the Poles call 'kminek'

History / 1940 massacre of Poles remains potent issue [35]

heh there were spies in MI5 and MI6 - remember Kim Philby - I guess he was just a tip of an iceberg of pro-Soviet espionage among the British - and the guy is after some Polish guy - btw there was a film about how brave American sailors captured enigma device and there was a Polish officer depicted in the film who was a German spy heheh - btw there was no mention in the film about the Polish contribution to the deciphering of enigma

eventually, I don't argue it wasn't possible - some Polish officer in Bletchley was a Soviet spy, but even if it is true did it matter that much in Soviet spy-riddled British intelligence

btw America was also communist spies riddled - see Algernon Hiss case, how did the soviets acquire atomic bomb plans etc.

Food / Mushroom Picking Parties (Poland tradition) [74]

Practically, only one species:

not true - one of the borowik family can be mildly toxic if consumed along alcohol - borowik ceglastopory - Boletus erythropus- quite common where I live - and quite tasty too

there are other members of Boletus genus that are toxic to various degrees for example borowik szatański (Boletus satanas) - still they are not common at all here where I live

Food / Mushroom Picking Parties (Poland tradition) [74]

first of all most mushroom that have lamellae under on the lower part of their hats are not edible with some exceptions, and most importantly some are very toxic - one species to the extent not much can be done to help a person who digested one - (they are from Amanita genus)

on the other hand most mushroom that have a spongy bottom of the hat are edible - but there are some exceptions

I did not mention other mushrooms (there are other types) 'cause they are rarely picked for consupmtion - there are no truffles in Poland - well there weren't - there are signals that perhaps there a couple locations where you can find them here

you should be careful with alcohol after eating mushrooms - some normally edible species can make you ill after following them with alcohol

Language / Hussar-the word, is it originally Polish? [10]

husarz - masculine noun, plural husarze - no articles (prefixes) in Polish - most often you can guess the gender by the form of the word (in singular nominative case most feminine words end with -a, most neuter nouns with -o or -e, and most masculine with a consonant - there are exceptions though)

Language / Formal "you" and Informal "you" : which is which? [46]

pluralis maiestatis

WAS is only for plural now

pluralis maiestatis was only used to address very high figures as far as I can tell - i.e. kings/queens, high church figures, top government figures - however it is all gone - it has no use in real life in Polish now (pluralis maiestatis means addressing a single prominent person with plural)

Language / Grammar for "Grandma Cookie" [7]

mafketis - babcine would not be comprehensible to second or third generation Polonia - it is all true that in Polish you don't join nouns just like that (like say babcia ciastka ;) heheh) but I suppose they just need a Polish accent in the name - the accent that makes one think of his Grandma and her cookies ;) Grandmas Cookies won't do the thing - but Babunia's Cookies should

Language / Grammar for "Grandma Cookie" [7]

oh well if just want to have grandma in Polis it can be Babunia's Cookies or Babuni Cookies or perhaps Babunia Cookies - proper grammar is not so important - you are not going to market these in Poland anyway - only the perception of your customers counts - I personally would go for Babunia's Cookies

Babunia is sort of diminutive of babcia and it is much more affectionate than the original babcia

Language / Grammar for "Grandma Cookie" [7]

ciasteczka babuni

wouldn't bother with the pronounciation :P

ok babuni - would be baboonee ;) seriously ;)

and ciasteczka hmm - can be approximated as ch(i)astechkah

so cha(h)-stech-kah ba-boo-nee - italics indicate the accent/stress

Language / Translations of Gadu-Gadu [158]

I am not sure it is possible - though someone showed me once another Polish communicator - tlen where he could see his gg contacts - must be that tlen works also as gg client - so if you 'pidgin' can act like a gg client then you can register but seriously I doubt if any universal (international) communicator does act as gg client

Study / Did anyone (from this forum) face Master or MBA defence in Polish University? [4]

most questions on the exam deal with general knowledge (in your field/faculty)(but somehow connected to the field of your thesis) - there's three maybe four people in the examining commission - each is gonna ask you questions

there will be questions about your thesis of course

the exam is most of the time formality

Life / Driving License - B1 that allows 16 year old to drive light vehicles? [27]

wouldn't bother dnz - it would be difficult to get rid of 80kg in maluch - window panes not that heavy after all - you could only replace front boot cover with fibreglass thing don't think engine cover (in the rear) could be replaced, cutting a hole in the roof could help perhaps but it weakens the construction considerably I guess - getting rid of both doors can help significantly - but not sure you could register the vehicle after all these changes - it would need some extra inspection by a professional which doesn't cost a pittance - and still there's no guarantee the vehicle would be allowed to use the public roads - also you could think of replacing the original maluch wheel which are quite heavy with something lighter - but it wouldn't be anything straightforward

oh I can see now you need 550 kg so perhaps it wouldn't be that difficult

News / 14 year old rape victim from Warsaw denied abortion! [348]

I'm sure that the choice faced by many mothers considering abortion is a difficult one - and simply denying them the right to do so (banning abortion) is no real solution (if there is no support from the society) - on the other hand abortion at will is even worse - that most people fail or don't want to notice that it precipitates dear consequences doesn't mean there aren't any

News / 14 year old rape victim from Warsaw denied abortion! [348]

well - you could believe me or her ;)

i'm a Pole too heheh

should I believe Sean you take anything you read in newspapers as beyond doubt?
Gazeta Wyborcza is actually leading manipulatory medium in Poland and for years they pampered a guy who was a secret services informator instrumental in the case of Pyjas's murder as the main editor (TW Ketman)

Sean - during sleep you are temporarily unconscious - and that is not that you are completely unconscious - loud noise can wake you up

the same goes to the stoned - after the stoning stuff gets metabolised they regain much of the consciousness, don't they :)

Sean - i am not sure science will ever be able to determine when a foetus becomes a sentient being (or inhabited by a conscious being) - anyway our being is far more than the material - i won't argue/dispute much on that - don't have enough missionary zeal - if you have your own views that's ok - just what teachings I have had a chance to study make much more sense than anything else - and I could also say I have some experience to back my beliefs but not to argue for them

News / What Poland thinks about China [27]

China is a big mildly totalitarian state in the middle of Asian continent that invaded Tibet somewhere in the 50's and will start a mission to the Moon God only knows what for

aaa and hhmmm China is strange in many ways ;) eating rice with stick - dear God ;)

oh and there are so many Chinese people there who say Amelika instead of America ;)

oh and there is hardly any religious freedom there

News / 14 year old rape victim from Warsaw denied abortion! [348]

don't get your point Sean

Well, it was translated by a Pole, gumishu.

a baby in womb is a concious being - it is a being even before entering the material universe - all life is spiritual - even the material world is built with spiritual energy - most of us have been to this world many times before

there is a BBC series about pregnancy using some quite recent discoveries and footage that would make many of you change your views about the subject - i don't know the title I have seen just one part of the series - what they present is scientific approach not metaphysical of course [

btw I am not saying I know better what the girl should have done - but the choices we make have consequences sooner or later

Marek

nouns and infinitives ;)
