History / Poland war propaganda poster - can anyone explain this picture? [292]

Theres no needs for propaganda posters refering to Poland as why would the Nazis need the German people to harden their resolve against an easily beatable enemy?

Easily beatable my butt, need I remind you it took both Soviets and Nazi's and still we are here. Not to mention, well one more time, fought from start to finish on all fronts.

German propaganda against Poles

It shows the Poles as aggressors and ...

Feldzug in Polen (The Campaign in Poland) is a 69 minute documentary/Nazi propaganda film depicting the 1939 invasion of Poland and directed by Fritz Hippler. It shows the Poles as aggressors and ethnic Germans living in Poland as an oppressed minority. It also highlights the unheroic tactics the Poles used in the war and their senseless defense of a besieged Warsaw. The film was often screened by German minorities overseas to clarify the German point of view. (more...)

History / Katyn- forgiven and forgotten? [111]

Actually I can't blame Poles for their average attitude towards Russians. That what I felt rightaway after watching.

OMG are you seeing another point of view. :) The attitude is not towards the Russian citizens but your goverment that continues to lie and now teach this to your children. This renewed worship of "Stalin" boasting his actions is a slap in the face to the victims.

Millions were ready to join the Wehrmacht but Hitler with his conquering- and opression goals blew it all!

My family was already in Siberia at this time, but you bring up another interesting thought. I wonder what if Hitler didn't turn on Stalin?

You are form this part of Poland you should know who killed so many Polish there.

Stalin killed the Polish. This was Poland. We lived with Jewish, German's, Ukrainians and Russian.

Merged: Katyn 'poisons' Polish-Russian relations

Seems the time is at hand for Russia to take responsibility for actions. It does not seem to me that Russia understands that this must take place to move forward. Can they really feel this will just go away. Long term you would think they would be able to look at their actions in the past just as all other nations have had to do and deal with it. Thoughts?

"Former foreign secretary Adam Rotfeld, a member of a bilateral history commission, urges Moscow to be more open about the perpetrators of the 1940 murder of 20,000 Polish officers, know as the Katyn massacre."

"Moscow's seeming indifference to the sensitive subject of Soviet treatment of Polish prisoners has helped sour relations between Poland and Russia."

"In July it was reported that a new school text book will paint Stalin as an efficient leader and the killing of Polish officers in Katyn was "revenge", committed by Poland during the 1920 war between the two countries."

Moscow's seeming indifference to the sensitive subject of Soviet treatment of Polish prisoners has helped sour relations between Poland and Russia.

History / Only two countries in Europe did not accept XVIIIc partitions of Poland.. [54]

Charlie Chaplin said it best.

Charlie Chaplin's Great Dictator's Final Speech - (Oct.1940)

Now you tell me: Why did Britain and France declare War on the German Reich in 1939? There was something call the "Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact" which was a Treaty of Non-aggression between Nazi Germany and the USSR which amonst other things includded the invation, partition and subsequent anexation of Poland by these two countries.

This of course, as agreed happened. Still, Britain and France declared War on Nazi Germany, but not on the USSR.
The Question is: Why if both the USSR and Nazi Germany commited the same crime one got away with murder and the other didn't? Why when a fascist state invades another country we talk about "Crimes Against Humanity" mean while when a Communist Country does so ...or for the same reason a so call Democracy does so...they can bend all the rules and get away with murder? Do you get me? I bet you do!!! Peace Out!!! ;o)

News / Polish court systems [11]

Who can use these powers? Where is the EU heading?

"Here is something the Government told us would never happen. When Britain signed up to the European Arrest Warrant (EAW) six years ago, critics pointed out that an individual could be extradited to another EU state to face prosecution for something that is not a crime in Britain and had not even been committed in the requesting country. Ministers dismissed such concerns as fanciful, but it has come to pass."

History / Why we talk about Nazis not Germans [138]

That's in part due to what I was taught here in US schools. WW2 was all about the "Holocaust". Funny we could not mix religion with school in public schools, yet Jewish history was aloud. I used to question how partial history could be taught as the truth.

Should Poland let in refugees from USA ?

Are you referring to DP's or all refugees. DP's from WW2 just to USA by 1953 600,000 and their children are still Polish citizens.

Only after they prove they are not terrorists.

How would they do that? If only there was a special test.

History / Why we talk about Nazis not Germans [138]

I was merely pointing out that the Poles and the Russians tend to talk about WWII as if the events were still vivid in their memories whereas most people in the west have moved on, in the sense that WWII events are a distant memory.

They are and need to be talked out to move forward.

History / Who were European natives? What happened to them? Where they are? [79]

Haplogroup

Thanks for the information, I was not aware they could break it down like this.

U5: The mitochondrial super-haplogroup U encompasses haplogroups U1-U7 and haplogroup K. Haplogroup U5, with its own multiple lineages nested within, is the oldest European-specific haplogroup, and its origin dates to approximately 50,000 years ago. Most likely arising in the Near East, and spreading into Europe in a very early expansion, the presence of haplogroup U5 in Europe pre-dates the expansion of agriculture in Europe. Haplogroup U5a1—a lineage within haplogroup U5—arose in Europe approximately 30,000 years ago, and is mainly found in northwest Europe. In the context of its rather ancient origin, the modern distribution of haplogroup U5a1 suggests that individuals bearing this haplogroup were part the initial expansion tracking the retreat of ice sheets from Europe. Bryan Sykes in his Seven Daughters of Eve book named this mtDNA haplogroup Ursula.

USA, Canada / Do most polish people want to stay in the US? [17]

My father was born in Poland and I in the USA, In 1951 my family came here. Even if I went back my fathers home is no longer Poland but, W. Ukraine. My Grandfather was born in Rzym, Polska and he instilled a love of Poland. My Dad living through Siberia deportation speaks very little of Poland.

I can't wait to visit and see for myself the beauty I could feel in my Grandfathers words. As for staying, IMO the DP's children had to wait to long to return. We now (as Miranda pointed out) have jobs, marriage, mortgage etc. My family came here and had to learn to speak english and new ways, I would have to go to Poland and learn Polish and their ways.

I guess Lukasz fancies himself as a hotshot prime minister

I don't feel this opposition to Nord from Poland comes as a suprize to anyone. It's just one more way for Russia to takeover EU and screw Poland in the process. If Poland and say USA were doing this I am sure Germany and Russia would be having a fit.

Germany is looking at this as an investment and not wanting to miss the boat, so to speak. Lets hope they do not cut off their nose dispite their face.

Russia Rides the German Rails

Russian Railways intends to buy 5 percent of the shares in the German Deutsche Bahn railway, when it holds its IPO in the coming weeks, Russian Railways president Vladimir Yakunin told The International Herald Tribune. "For us, integration is an essential part of our strategy. Obtaining a stake in Deutsche Bahn's international public offering would be a good investment," Yakunin said. He did not comment on the deal further.

History / Why we talk about Nazis not Germans [138]

It's like as if the war ended in 1945, and then u lot went into collective coma until 1990, u then woke up with WWII timeline still so vivid in your heads.

While the "Holocaust" was able to speak of the crimes directed on Jewish, the Polish in "occupied Poland" had to remain silient. While Germany took responsability, (with Soviets as judge and juror) the Russian's refuse to look at their role. While Germany showed remorse over Hitler actions, Russia to this day idolize Stalin.

Although today the lies are being brought to light, Russia's flaunting Stalinism in Poland's face is adding insult to injury.

I know it is huge in farm country in the US

This is not true as far as where the problem in US is. In fact it is not an isolated problem and it hits all income levels. Treatment that has been most effective is medication along with mandatory therpy. I still feel laws should be stricter, today the max time for this offense is 10 years served, mandatory reporting (see megan's law).

In the USA we do have ways of tracking the offenders. Do you have this in Poland yet? I can search any area and see where they reside after released.

They also cannot live near schools, work that puts them in contact with children and many cannot have contact with children under 18 years of age.

Moscow Can Now Offer Russian Citizenship to Eight Million Ukrainians

Rice says Russia more authoritarian

"Russia's attack fits into a worsening pattern of behavior over several years - among other things, its use of oil and gas as tools of coercion, its threat to target peaceful nations like Poland with nuclear weapons, and its curtailment of law and liberty at home," she said. "The emerging picture is an increasingly authoritarian and aggressive Russia."

"Our strategic goal now is to make it clear to Russia's leaders that their choices are putting Russia on a one-way path to self-imposed isolation and international irrelevance," Rice said.

iht.com/articles/ap/2008/09/25/europe/EU-Poland-US-Russia.php

"The delegates began to discuss the war between Russia and Georgia first thing in the morning, but only 26 members were able to speak. Most of them criticized both Russia and Georgia with extreme severity. "There is a concept in criminal law of premeditated crime," said Swede Goran Lindblad. "This war was a premeditated crime. We know, for example, that the Russian 58th Army was ready for the war in advance. The premeditation on Russia's side is obvious. On Georgia's side too. The only difference is that Georgia acted on its own territory and Russia invaded another. Both are completely unacceptable."

"The Russian delegates talk about some new world order, but what they call a new world order is the really same old Soviet world order. And that is unacceptable."

Moscow Can Now Offer Russian Citizenship to Eight Million Ukrainians

According to that newspaper, "those who want to receive a Russian passport do not need to live on the territory of the [Russian] Federation for five years, provide evidence of the source of their incomes or demonstrate a knowledge of Russian" if they are former citizens of the USSR and were born on the territory of Russia.
