For the same reason we've never been to the moon. Another reason - life on the Moon or Mars would have been 100 more challenging than life on the Sahara desert (on the desert we'd not have to worry about oxygen and -80F temperatures though).

Not believing in nukes, is sort of worse than not believing in Moon landings or dinosaurs. If a large part of the population believes those things, it can actually result in catastrophic real world results - not the same with the moon or dinosaurs.

The psychology of it is extremely puzzling, at least to me personally.

It is more puzzling than moon landing denial... because nuclear weapons are not just a single historical event captured on film. Nukes are a vast technological system, with hundreds of thousands of people, institutions, physical artifacts, and actual ongoing consequences.

It's highly likely, wherever or whoever you are, that you actually know someone who knows someone who is involved in the nuclear industry. Maybe it's not the same with astronauts and paleontologists.

I think the principal epistemological error is - "I haven't personally witnessed it, therefore it's fake".

But unlike moon landings, this is an instance of "distributed evidence" on the same order as:

1) A Boeing 747 can fly

2) There are satellites in space

3) A semiconductor powers my phone

4) A submarine can remain underwater for months
