Let's talk about shoes

Normal in Poland.

I wouldn't say that tiles are common in the 'living' areas. Kitchen, Bathroom, hallway-yes

Bathroom

We have additional electric underfloor heating in the bathrooms to use when the main heating isn't on. Though we don't use those much. It's more expensive and basically overkill and in any case, we have a cat litter tray in one of the bathrooms and I don't fancy keeping that on a simmer. The rest of the rooms all have underfloor pipes with a higher concentration in the living room and hall and less elsewhere.

It works very well and I'm glad we have it.

Sorry, I meant the tiles.

tiles

I wouldn't really have thought about ceramic tiles outside bathrooms and maybe a kitchen, however they're really good (providing they're heated) ours look like parquet except they never scratch. I'd have them again.

They're not particularly soft and they're usually brown

I have them in white for summer; they look quite acceptable - and I have red ones with sheepskin lining and gold embroidery for winter. I prefer open back because they can slip on and off quickly. I only started wearing slippers in the house during the day when I came to Poland.

In Ireland I followed in my granny's and mother's footsteps - literally - by having house shoes. That was quite common in their generations. We also had them in school. You had to change into your indoor shoes which had rubber soles in order not to mark the parquet floors in the convent. Everybody had the same. It was part of the uniform.

I'm probably the only one in our house who wears slippers around the house. The rest just wears socks around the house and even barefoot in the summer.

Thank Gods and Goddesses for that. Good job. Thanks to that you not only are more hygenic and esthetic but you look more feminine and sexy.

OK, but leather slippers? They'renot particularly soft andthey're usuallybrown (I somehow don't find that sexy in home slippers for women). Could you post a photo as an example of what you have in mind? 🤔

I wear them in the house. I have a leather pair I bought in Poland for the summer and I I have sheepskin boot type slippers for winter. My feet are often freezing cold :(

Those look OK (although when at home I prefer softer slippers, rather than leather ones).

My city grandpa was wearing brown leather slippers with those little "air" holes and that's probably why when I think about "leather home slippers" I don't associate them with anything feminine :)

My feet are often freezing cold :(

I have the same problem - I have low blood pressure :/

Oh, cold sensitivity, In case of hypothyroidism, thyroid hormones help.

@Alien, yes, they do help - I take Letrox, but I still have a fairly low blood pressure even when my TSH level is normal.

Well, if not slippers, there are good old thick woolen socks and leggings.

thick woolen socks

I've never seen bed socks in Poland. Perhaps because homes are usually heated well. They're old fashioned, but as well as wearing them in bed, they can be a good alternative to slippers around the house.

I do have slippers, mostly the ones they give you in nice hotels and did had some leather ones but the cat shredded them.

These socks in the photo look like they were hand-crocheted by grandma.

But today's grandmothers don't crochet anymore.

Some people do still crochet, though sadly creating things at home is less popular than it used to be.

Yes, for example Miss Marple, whose films I like to watch, she constantly crochets, but it was in the times of Agatha Christie.

Plenty do now though not as many as yesteryear sadly.

The Olympic diver and gold medalist Tom Daley crochets between winning prizes.

Just today, while going for a walk on holiday, I discovered a shoemaker near our hotel that also produces handmade shoes. It's called Stellavato Raffaele. I couldn't resist going in and talking to him. I looked at the shoes, patted the guy on the back and we talked about his shoes, which start at around €560 per pair. I just forgot to ask whether he was the owner of the workshop or just an employee. Unfortunately, I probably won't find out because I won't order the shoes from him, although they are beautiful.

Stellavato Raffaele

I just googled him. You're on holiday in a nice place. Not cheap though.

start at around €560 per pair

That's over £400 and over 2000zl however some people pay more than that for ones that are mass produced so it seems a good price. They would probably last a very long time and fit like a glove.

The city Imspend most time in when in the U.K. has a shop which sells Church's shoes. Not quite handmade but almost. Certainly hand finished. They're not cheap but I'm thinking about it.

Beautiful shoes, and so far at a reasonable price (they were). Unfortunately, they are currently owned by Prada, which resulted in prices increasing by 100% almost overnight. £750-850, when not long ago you could choose from models for £350. If you find some at the old price, it's worth considering.

Indeed. I 8now a priest who always wears them. Perhaps the name appeals.

I was wrong though, it isn't Church's. It's Loake's that the shop sells. They're an old British brand. I had some years ago and they were good.

Loake's that the shop sells

Very elegant, I happened to have one pair. However, they are Goodyear welted.

Picasso, van Gogh and others were seen, yesterday admission to museums was free. After visiting the museum, I even found instructions from one shoemaker at the exhibition on the difference between handmade shoes and the so-called Goodyear welted shoes. Both can be very good and expensive.

An example of desirable and relatively cheap shoes made using the 'Goodyear welted' technique are Chapman & Moore shoes. The shoes are offered in the UK but manufactured in India. Classic models made of thick leather, thick sole, nice to look at, and are 2-3 times cheaper than, for example, 'Echte Budapester' from Budapest.
