How useful do you find these congresses? Do you learn anything new?

Yes, there are always some new things
Why don't they open the windows

Usually, windows are opened during breaks, but when there is, for example, a 1.5-hour session after a break with a room full of people, the room becomes "sleepy".

a scientific congress, i.e. sitting in a large darkened room with (sometimes) hundreds of other participants and listening to lectures.

I think that's what's meant by a conference over here. Thankfully, I only have to attend them twice yearly.

you cannot control drowsiness.

That's been my problem attending them. Usually because I find them quite boring, although this year we did have one absolutely riveting guest speaker which turned out to be the highlight of the day.

Fortunately, such people also happen. Returning to clothes, the vast majority of my colleagues wear suits and, just to be clear, no one wears sneakers with suits (which has been fashionable recently), and neither do I.

German women love Birkenstock shoes, the most 'unfeminine' shoes in the entire world. Why? πŸ€”

@Alien, because Birkenstock shoes are comfortable and Germans like walking and hiking? πŸ€”

And that they "like" it is probably an understatement lol:

I was a US soldier stationed in Garmisch Germany and I would hike up the mountains on my off days. One day I took a friend who was new to the base. We got about half way up and he crapped out. As he was sitting on the side of the trail trying to recover an elderly German women passed us and asked him his age. He said 22. She laughed and said she was 78 and kept on laughing until she was out of sight 🀣

@henkharlekin
As a german I can confirm that 19 km are the warm-up."

German women

Apart from wearing Birkenstocks, German women usually dress in loose, wide (too wide) clothes, the dominant colour of which is all shades of grey. Yes, German women are very practical.

walk at least 1 hour a day.

During this time I can take up to 8,000 steps. I recommend it to everyone, regardless of the weather....in winter, of course, waterproof shoes.

Today it's -12 °C here. Time for an extra down jacket and real winter boots. πŸ€”

Today it's -12 °C here.

I told you it was coming a few days ago in a post when it was so cold here.
That post has since been deleted by the Mod. for some reason like so many of my posts have been.
This morning in Northern Michigan areas hit -25C.
We have been hit with TEN Polar Vortexes so far this winter.
Something to do with Global Warming I guess.
Put my insulated boots on and go snow shoeing.

Today we have "only" -15C, but beautiful sun and snow.

Same here, -15C ........it is starting to warm up.
The polar vortex is moving out of here.
By next week we will have above freezing temperatures which everyone is looking forward to including my deer and birds.
This means by the end of next week it should start warming up in Poland.

should start warming up in Poland.

In Germany it is usually warmer than in Poland. German men usually do not wear hats, even in winter....and they wear half-boots all year round.

The LVMH Group, which owns the Birkenstock brand, wanted to legally ensure that the Birkenstock form is a work of art. Of course, in order to collect license fees for longer. Fortunately, a wise court rejected this yesterday.
