i been learning to cut gemstones for past 3 years . in my free time
only work with opals from Australia.i dont work with expensive stuff, cus its only a hobby .but its a hell of fun.
very pretty and unpredictable when cutting. fairly easy to learn. very addictive.

That's interesting... I've never heard of such a hobby. Could you post photos of your works?

@Paulina
i dunno. it says file too big.i have like 1000 images .and videos
its really not that expensive. equipment about 500 euro, and opal material about 500 for the start. should be enough to keep you going for 6 months
can even make money if you learn good.
but its so chilling. you wake up,make coffee ,scratch your balls ,and 8 hours off cutting goes so fast.

Yeah, I imagine it must be relaxing and satisfying :)

Download IfranView - it's free and easy to use. You can resize the photo to make it smaller and if that isn't enough you can save the file in lower quality - that will make the file smaller.

Pretty :))) So those are opals after cutting, yes? What do they look like before cutting?

some rough opal material look like a stone/rock,with abit of color inside. so its gamble. you never know if there is enough opal inside to cut stone.

but sometimes i buy opal crystal chips from cutters and i make doublets. i basically glue opal crystal to obsidian
but i cut solid stones as well

That sounds a fascinating hobby. I've way too bad eyesight for something like that, even reading print books and newspapers are out now.

I stop and start creative writing and do lectures for something a bit like the university of the third age in Poland and preparing them is a bit of a hobby.

you dont need good eyesight. funny that you mention it. i have bad eyesight.
the way you do it is that you use one of those big magnification lamp with led light. you know ,,those ones that surgeons use in hospitals. and they actuality correct yours sight when you look through it .

what your writing are about?

Mostly history, futurology and applied psychology. Delivered as lectures and available in written form. The joy of it is in the writing and preparing. I thought of writing something and trying to flog it on Amazon however it takes a lot of discipline to get right and a lot of time to do the marketing.

I also make cheese at home. It took a lot of trial and error but the end results are now good. We've got a store room full of big Parmesan style ones and plenty of Warsaw Cheddar. Originally I started doing it on breaks from work but my OH has started doing it more so I've taken a backseat. I also used to do home distilling and may start that again.

Right now I'm living in hotel rooms in Africa and getting bored of just looking at the internet and drinking coffee.

Cliodynamics will be something we hear more of. I suspect China are stealing a match on the west in this. They are veering days harvesting for it.

From another thread:

I'm never going to be the next Leonardo da Vinci no matter how hard I try!

Very few will! Leonardo da Vinci wasn't "just" talented, he was a genius (and not only in the artistic field) :) There aren't many people like that, I think. 🤔

Yes. I spent years drawing, at one time it was my obsession.

A kindred spirit! :))) So, out of 4 women on this forum 3 are into art and making art... Interesting... 🤔

I still have all my artwork. Some of it is so old that the paper has yellowed.

Oh wow, that's so awesome! I was throwing away most of my drawings when I was a teen, because I thought I will make something better one day... I didn't realise that the adult me will be sentimental about my old drawings :(((

Could you possibly post any of your stuff on here?? =)))

I wanted to go to art school but my parents said no and when I left home at 16, I put thoughts of going out of my mind as I had to work.

I feel for you... For all my parents' faults at least they didn't object to me going to art school.

Further education for me came years later.

So at some point you got to go to an art school or an art course? Or do you mean your scientific education?

@Novichok, do you have any hobby that doesn't make people squirm? lol

Dug out from the depths of Polanda:

You'd probably like it because it can be wet again and reworked.

Atch, I've been watching videos on YouTube of artists painting with gouache and I'm getting more and more interested. It will probably take some time before I try it out, because I have acrylics to use up before they dry out lol, but could you recommend any gouache brand? Which one are you using? And what kind of paper do you use for gouache? 🤔

I like cruising the US on country roads and talking to random people.
All I have to do is say how is life here and people will talk revealing the most private facts.
Did I say I love Americans and that I never felt so much at home as here?

Me too!

One of my favorite things is to get lost while driving along country roads. You see some interesting stuff you'd never come across if you weren't lost.

I like getting "lost" in new-to-me cities. Being a guy, the first question on my mind is where is North. Then everything falls into place.

How could you! I only ever through drawings away if I wasn't happy with them. Bit of a perfectionist I'm afraid!

Could you possibly post any of your stuff on here??

Don't think I'm up to the PF criticism! Especially since I'm the only one that hasn't studied art at an advanced level.

Have you posted any art on here before?

Or do you mean your scientific education?

Yes. I did my A levels and both degrees as a mature student.
