These remarks by Höcke are not that strange for many Germans at all who rediscover nationalism.

The AfD election slogan "Alice for Deutschland" sounds alot like "Alles für Deutschland"....

Anti-Semitism was surely earlier a badge for rightwing extremists....today it's the Right which supports Israel and fighting Jews.

Today it's the Left which is openly anti-semitic and want Israel annihilated and jewish life in the West destroyed (Boycotts etc.)....crazy times!

You have a codex based legal system which probably means that people can't be prosecuted for the Alice thing. In Common Law systems there's the concept of "reasonable understanding" which means they can. I'd just ban it.


Both are important. There should never be a state narrative about history as there is in Poland. It should look at the good and the bad and above all understand the way people thought. It sounds like Hocke wants school to teach the 'Great Man' approach to history. I'd be happy about that (after all it was invented by my most famous relative who admired and famously wrote about Frederick of Prussia) if it wasn't inherently fascistic and if it didn't ignore the social context and the incredibly complex sets of circumstances that drive things along and if it didn't invariably extol the virtues of individuals, hero-worshipping or demonising them.


Fascists pretend to be anti or pro all sorts of things. It's solely about what suits their cause: power and destruction.

To which any decent person would reply: "Whats wrong with you?"

Just because more people come around to extreme views doesn't mean those views are acceptable.

Höcke didn't say "Alice für Deutschland" and he never claimed that he did in his defence. He made that remark well before Weidel became the candidate for the federal election.

He uttered this slogan at two seperate occasions. The second time after he had been indicted, ao he could not claim ignorance about the meaning.

And there is nothing you or I need to accept or like about, but you or I are not the decider....and as long as it proves to be successful with their audience in raising their numbers, why the *** should they stop that?

But as long as they are gaining ground with that totally democratic, meaning ONLY through elections, there is nothing the gov could or should to end that, THAT would be undemocratic...the GDR gov did that, banning the opposition, it didn't help them in the end at all!

Hm... an average German knows a lot about Holocaust but is largely unaware of what the Third Reich did to Slavs (there isn't even a decent memorial to Polish victims of nazism in Germany - 3 million ethnic Poles murdered!). I wonder if this lack of education is perhaps to blame for the rise of AfD and its popularity.

A party can try to win power through democratic means while planning to abolish the democratic order afterwards. Our concept of a wehrhafte Demokratie was born out of the need to deal with that kind of forces.

Populists tend to attract rich backers and are very good at getting in by the back door. They are superb at PR and if there's a sudden crisis they use it cravenly and very quickly. They scare people with imaginary threats. Orban, Milei, Vance/trumpet, Saddam, Franco, Stalin, D'Annumcio as well as a famous Austrian. All like that.
