I know, its hard saving up for a 42" plasma TV and PS3. The cost of Games and Blu-Rays are extortionate.

go through the links and you'll see that TVs, PS3s, Blue-Rays etc. are not the biggest concern for people in Poland.

Dont waste your time on Peter. He'll probably now throw doubt on your economics and maths skills and give you a piece of Polish government propaganda to backup his claims.

If he lived in Poland he'd know differently.

Poland is a geographic failure.

I have an idea - come to Krakow, meet me and say it directly to my face. Propably you will forget any word in your mouth. Your knowledge is zero about real Poles. Who do you know? Dirty uneducated workers from villages complaining a lot? Poland it is a country with great history and culture with many well educated, nice people...You can find dumbs in every country.

To anybody who doubts the veracity of the SPIEGEL article (which I've yet to read, by the way), I suggest they check out the news clipping "Kraków: Cud nad Wisłą" from several years back and to which I've aluded on previous occasions right here on PF. It's also available in English (Cracow: Miracle on the Vistula) and shows the amazing resilience of this once proud capital city.

The Cracovians can really pat themselves on the back!

I never suggested they were perfect, but cut 'em some slack for heaven's sake! Come to think of it, how's the air in Wrocław?

the promised land, clean, efficient and focused on the future "- writes the weekly.

Ha! Wonderful times they were. Now, after two terms of PiS in power, we are going to start anew and rebuild for decades.

Masters of Europe? my ass! Poland is and remains a FAILED STATE

Not necessarily. In truth, Poland is conceptionally similar to Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia but, much older conglomerate. The problem of Poland is that country now deviating from its original concept and that is Sarmatism.

With Sarmatism Poland have a chance. It's the only cohesive force that may keep united Polani, Kashubs, Silesians, and other kin within Poland.

Then we make the Central European Union.

the authoritarian-ruled and plagued by human rights violations of Ukraine. "Exemplary student and a naughty boy" - he writes, "Spiegel" of the two countries.

Interesting, what could be the origins of this difference? Could it be, for example, that genetics between two nations is so different? If yes, why?

It's definitely not genetics - Poles and Ukrainians are both Slavic nations. The explanation lays in different kinds of civilisation in Poland and Ukraine.

Poland is a Latin civilisation country (like Italy or France, for example) whilst Ukraine (apart, and only to some extent, from its western part that used to be Polish) has been under the influence of Turanic Russian civilisation for so long that the corruption and disregard for citizens' rights took very deep roots in Ukrainian society. This is a very basic civilisational knowledge, quite obvious for people familiar with major types of civilisation in Europe (Latin, Byzantine, Turanian).
