Hi guys. I have someone who lives in Krakow and is dear to me. I want to send them a web camera and some money so that they can install the internet and use it for Skype.

How much does hooking up cost? And what is the monthly fee for internet (please transfer it to dollar terms)?

Thank you all so much!

Low end broadband (5Mb/s) will be about $20 a month and about $30 as hook-up fee.

Does that include the wireless router? They have a laptop so it'd be nice to have internet in the whole apartment.

No. But a basic wireless router is about $50-70. Don't get one from the internet company, they always charge more than if you just buy one in the shops.

I wouldn't have thought that you can run a webcam over that often or for long.

UPC polska: 60PLN/month, 10Mb/s, no limit. Dirt cheap IMO. Fast too.

But what's your monthly limit? Some are as low as 2Gb per month.

Give them a call and check: a mate of mine recently bought a USB 3G modem, stuck his Era SIM card in it and promptly ran up a bill of 4,100zl in three weeks by going over his monthly limit!

3G internet has a limit here in the U.S. (and anywhere for that matter).
2 GB per month for 25$ using AT&T.
But home Internet is virtually unlimited in almost all countries. I would imagine it is the same in Poland. unless you are using the old and pre-historic dial-up connection.

so what is the best option? and how much is the cost in US $?

all they will be running is skype and normal internet usage. i wouldnt want them to get the limited internet with a certain max (like 2GB a month or anything like that).

so its about $20 / month for good internet speed? and $50 to install the service for the first time? correct?

if you can recommend a good company, id appreciate that...they dont know much about computers and internet and stuff. so i'd like to know whats good there so that i can tell them who to call and get it all set up ! thanks!

Did you read anything posted in this thread?

There are unlimited 3G plans in most of Europe now. UMTS and HSDPA is all over the place in Poland.

i didnt see how much the installation was for UPC polska. 60PLN = 18 bucks. which is cheap!

But ORANGE seems like a good deal too.

I guess my question was, who should they go with, UPC or ORANGE?

It's amazing how much has changed. These days, Multimedia Vectra offer a 600mb/s connection in Kraków for 65zł a month, while the cheapest connection is 150mb/s for 45zł a month.

1gb/s is also common in cities and new developments, too.
