Law / The right to own guns: would you support such legislation in Poland? [2562]

Oddly enough, we don't. Perhaps that's something to do with the far lower gun crime rates. That and the free healthcare.

As the poster above says - if you don't like the way we do things here, Lotnisko Okęcie and a flight out of Europe is but a cab ride away.

Obviously you don't care about real facts. Safety perception is lower in Europe than in the US, argue with the people doing the stats.

Oh, jump out the window, it's only a step or two away......

Law / The right to own guns: would you support such legislation in Poland? [2562]

EdwardC:
I think it's a shame that any country doesn't allow their citizen's the right to own firearms if they have no history of violence.

Most countries in Europe allow for that and most European countries have sensible safeguards in place to protect the public.

We have been over this countless times the simple fact remains more guns means more gun deaths.

Only simple to the simple-minded.

EdwardC: they can live with the consequences.

Like far lower gun crime and a far lower murder rate.

And feeling less safe, go figure. [Explore Nationmaster sometime.]

I think it's a shame that any country doesn't allow their citizen's the right to own firearms if they have no history of violence.

Then again, it's their country and if the super-majority doesn't want them, they can live with the consequences.

To each their own.

USA, Canada / Would like to move back to Poland from New York after living in USA for 20 years. [155]

Jeezus...........never let little things like facts and realities get in the way of your agendas.

The national average for a home loan is $222,261 with a $1,061 average monthly payment for a 30-year mortgage at 4 percent, according to LendingTree. (2012, realtor.org)

UK, Ireland / Finding ingredients for traditional British Xmas dinner in Poland? [21]

My plan is to do a medium-weight turkey (5-6 kilos) for Thanksgiving and the traditional Christmas ham for a few of my American and Polish friends. For thanksgiving, I just began looking at stuffing recipes on Friday. Dinner rolls shouldn't be a problem and I will go with baked apples as my second side. Still thinking about dessert but the visit to Carrefours will tell me whether I can do a pumpkin pie or not.

For Christmas, I'm planning on the traditional ham (but might fall back on turkey) that most Americans do if they keep the customs, along with stuffing, rolls, gravy (brown not giblet) and probably a pecan pie. America is somewhat regional in their eating traditions but it is pretty common to find potatoes which I'll probably mash and maybe some glazed carrots.

I'm more worried about the invitation list than the menu though.

Australia / Australian Immigration for Healthcare Professionals [2]

I have a student who is looking into immigration to Australia. Are there any fresh perspectives for Poles wishing to attempt this? It would be particularly interesting to know of any with an understanding of working in the regions as a healthcare professional.

Thanks for any information and perspective on this sort of situation.

USA, Canada / Any Polish communities near Memphis,TN [3]

While there are certainly Polish people, businesses and extended families in that area, I know of no "communities" per se, but......

A couple of interesting pops on Google though:

The Polish-American Society of Memphis: pasofmemphis.com/index.php/en/

The Polish-Catholic Mission of Memphis: polishcatholicmission.org/web/documents/20yrs.htm

If you're moving down there I understand getting in touch with like-minded folks and kindred spirits who likely have more things in common but really if you're visiting short-term get the flavor of the city by visiting the Civil Rights Museum, Beale Street, Mud Island and make a point of hitting the Top 5 BBQ joints for the best BBQ in the world.

Whatever your choices, ENJOY Memphis!
