USA, Canada / Sending a package to Poland for a Polish friend living in the US [3]

Sorry but I only speak/write English and a tinny bit of Spanish:
I am a subway train operator in the city where the United Nations was founded, (No it is not New York, it was founded somewhere else.) A woman slept through all stops and I woke her at the end of the line. She did not fit the usual profile of a homeless person but there were clues she was. I said I would try to help her. Her brief story: She came to America on a traveling student visa. She found an area she liked and fell in love with a young man and they moved in together. Marriage is not popular among many males in the U.S. as when you do, there is a lasting financial commitment even if you divorce. If you want to immigrate you have to get married. This couple got in trouble at a club for drug posession. Both had to do small jail time. The visa was over extend and young woman became homeless and was deported by the INS without an extra cloths to her mom's country of Poland although the young Woman is a Ukrainian citizen of Polish Jew decent. I want to get her an ipad so she can e-mail me once in a while but we are having a labor dispute right now and that will not happen until the labor dispute is over in 6 months.

How safe is it to send book packages in the mail or a check. Can a U.S. Bank check be deposited in a Polish bank account easily?
