Love / Should I bring gifts? - help with a Polish wedding [46]

hi, i got married to a polish woman in july. On our invitations the only thing we asked was that instead of bringing flowers could our guests compensate this with red wine. On the day outside the church some people brought flowers (a handfull) its tradition apparently! But most bought us bottles of wine, and handed us envelopes with cash in. One guest bought us a gift. We never specified what we wanted ie money they just turned up with the cash.

I think your taking away the main point of the day thought its a coming together of 2 people that love each other and im sure they will be happy with whatever you get them as long as your there!!

UK, Ireland / Getting the most from my hard earned money (transfer money from England to Poland) [41]

I work for an english company, paid in GBP into an english bank account. With exchange rates fluctuating so much i never can be sure exactly how far (or not) my money will go. Is there a better way of getting my money from England to Poland? My bank tends to take 0.14 PLN off me to the live rate. So if live rate is 5 zloty i get 4.86ish zloty from my bank when i go to the cash machine. I have tried signing up to a company that does a no fees exchange but the rate is less than then bankbecause i dont want to transfer £50000 at a time. Throw into this my bank charges me £1.50 everytime i use my card over here and this company doesnt charge me but my polish bank does when the money arrives here im still no better off! I can transfer in a lump sum from my bank on internet but this costs £10 and works out i get less than taking it out from the cash machine (if taking out £1500 a month).

Any help or ideas welcome!

Law / Bureaucracy in Poland [53]

Tell me about the older, stubborn bred office workers!!! They know everything (or so they think) the women in the offices here think everyone outside our town is wrong, even the Polish. Letters from the embassy about my marriage were wrong, my birth certificate was wrong because it was missing a full stop (joke there) everything is wrong. Do these people get employed to make things more easy or more difficult? ooooooh your english!! oooooo nie this is no good!!! wham and the stamp goes back on the pad without touching the paper!! Cheers luv!!

Life / Never want to leave Poland! [8]

Thanks to you both for some concrete info!
Yes my wife is Polish. With regard the flat, we have approached a company rather than an estate agent that are selling flats that they have built. They provide all the information, help etc regarding the flat. They charge 0.5% plus the current interest rate (which i think is about 4.5%) so its obviously 5% combined. The only catch to it all is you have to pay it back in 10 years. I think this is quite a good deal??!!! My brother in law (polish) seems to think it is?

With regards to residency etc i will have to head down to the relevant offices in centrum to speak to them with my wife now i know which ones they are.

Thanks
Tim
