Life / Poland's National Anthem "Mazurek DÄ…browskiego" (download mp3) [49]

March, march Dabrowski from Italia's fair lanes"

the chorus is "March March Dabrowski, from Italy to Poland
under your command, we will reunite with our nation"

The song was written at a time when Poland was fighting for its independence.
Dabrowski was a general in the Polish legion in Italy, who were fighting along side napoleon's French revolutionary army. It was basically an inspirational army song.

Life / What do Poles want, what drives them...? [58]

Everyone of your listings involves needing money, its interesting reading the responses everyone mentions money with the exception of Torq. I wonder what would replace money if we didnt live in such cynical world.

You should take up philosophy;)

lol yea thats about right.

I come form the highlands and there is a saying their when someone is being pushy "tak sie pcha jak Goral do spowiegi"....."his as pushy as a highlander to the confessional" (I can testify to that, as when i visit I almost always miss communion because I cnt get through to the scrum of ppl) Anyway the impression I always get is that its just for show. As in you need to be seen at church or u'll be ill spoken of (particularly among the older generations) So to some extent the piety is put on

I wonder why there is a common belief that we are especially piety

We are more pious then most countries. Probably the most devout country in europe. I remember when I arrived in Poland 2 years ago (first time as an adult) The first thing I noticed travelling through the Polish country side was the packed church's. People were standing outside as there was no room and kneeling.

Life / What do you like about Poland? [100]

but were invited in and the wife promptly put out coffee, water, bread, cold cuts, salad and cakes! What a surprise!

When I was In Poland visiting friends/family or other random ppl, I noticed to every house I went to, ppl would put out ridiculous amounts of food in front of me, and expect me to eat it! People in the Highlands of Poland in noticed are far more hospitable then other areas of Poland. But yea Polish hospitality is a great thing.

I wasn't attacking national virtues...because glorifying suffering is not a virtue and
not something Poles should dwell in.

All countries take pride and glorify ppl who died fighting for their countries, not jst Poland. As you said Poles like to think of themselves as romantics and are also staunchly catholic, you put 2 together and suffering is going to be glorified big time

For that I had my helmet...but the mods stole it...and the other avatars

what do u mean, what was it, like a forum picture or somthing?....avatars?

Yes...once we were a great looking forum with nice avatars for everybody and all things your could dream of but then a mod decides to steal our avatars and put them in some gulag godknowswhere!

hmmm sounds good, wonder why they decided to do that?. I'll defiantly join the resistance! Btw no hard feeling about some of the comments before ay, to be honest w/ u most Poles have a lot of respect for German's these days...

No, I dnt want ppl like you attacking our national values and virtues is one reason. Secondly in the words of our famous poet Mickiewicz "If I forget about them, then you God in heaven forget about me"

You are the newbie here...I'm a favourite here and my helmet is legendary!

I guess you must already have rhino hide skin, from all the various insults;)

Today you just don't get real respect or sympathy

Ur absolutely right. Poland never got respect or any recognition for what we went through. We were sold out on numerous occasions in WW2 by our allies. Despite our huge efforts in WW2 we weren't even invited to the victory parade. So yes we will keep on harping on about how much we went through. We are a proud and stubborn people, we will not go quietly in any matter involving justice, truth and character. These are the reasons why in almost every country where there is a Polonia population their is a big Katyn memorial statue.

Sure...if my mom had any balls she would be my dad!

This is a bit off topic...but why are you even on this forum? what interest do you have in Poland. all you do is mock our values and history. What makes you think any Pole on this forum will take what you have to say seriously. I mean honestly do something better w/ ur time. Go drink a beer or plan an invasion, or whatever germans do these days.

Just saying...I know that the common Poles sees it more like the common German or else Poland wouldn't work on getting their country up and running but instead sitting whining in some dark corner wallowing in self pity!

No u couldn't be more wrong. Our ways of thinking are completely different then urs. Germans are subservient, Poles are strong minded and independent.........Consider why the partitions of Poland began. Any Pole knows that had not the misfortunes of modern history befallen on Poland we would be a richer and more prosperous country, many times more than Germany.

Also I think ur misinterpreting my "Christ of nations" quote for self pitty, which could'nt be further from the truth. The belief is an acceptance of our fate, a call to action.

Polish are brave, heroic....losers! That's how you love to see yourself...the world is only so cruel to you all the time with purpose....because you are Poles...you suffer so nicely

YOU need to understand somthing you bloody Kraut, no one gives a **** what u have to say about history, as a dirty hun u disqualify urself from issues involving history..........

a simple reply of HITLER, is enough to win any arguement with u

Poles are romantic wussies who think their suffering is something special! That their suffering makes them something special

Polish romanticism and the idea of suffering inspired the person considered to be the man of the 20th century, Karol Wojtyla. Yes we are romantics, yes we embrace suffering as inevitable and the need to fight on despite it. I dnt see any thing wrong w/ that on the contrary, what noble and empowering distinctions! if it wasn't for this there would be no Poland....what character, the stuff of legend.......anyway u consider Gorals to be german, so ur clearly an idiot, and this might go over ur head

The whole Christ of Nations thing is just plainly ridiculous,

"Polish Catholicism particularly is inclined to define itself around the idea of its victim hood. Since the nineteenth century and through most of the twentieth, Poland was self-styled "Christ among the nations," an epithet associated with the nineteenth-century Romantic poet Adam Mickievicz. Poland's passion and death, repeatedly enacted at the hands of imperialist neighbors from the early 1800s to 1939 engendered a stoic hope Poland's suffering would redeem the godlessness of modern Europe and would at last restore Christendom."- James Carroll

But you don't live here, so how can you know anything about Poland?

Well obviously I do know somthing about it, as I know more of what it means to be Polish then you.......................also what exactly do u consider a liberal govt. abortion, prostitution, legalization of drugs? The current govt is and should be as liberal as it gets

I would hope it would translate into compassion and charity, and mutual solidarity, and selflessness, not dogmatism and narrow-mindedness

yes Absolutely, spot on

The usage of "we" is particularly sickening when you aren't actually Polish, nor do you live in Poland.

Well I am Polish, and although I dnt live there, that is the philosophy I was not only taught as a child but the philosophy i discovered myself when reading Polish history. Also who the hell are u to say who's polish and who's not. My perspective of what it means to be Polish makes me more Polish then you. Yeah things are changing....wow....that does not destroy the virtues a values that make up the character of the nation.

It is the most disgusting thing it could ever happen to human - to be gay.
There is nothing more to say.

Im not gay, but ur comments disgust me. Either ur hiding ur own insecurities or ur a idiot. Come on! how can we distinguish our selves from the rag heads in the middle east who stone people for being different.

But it just makes me wonder if it's even possible to be a non-Catholic in Poland, with religion being taught at school and even on days off (rekolekcje) as a mandatory activity.

You have to understand what catholicism means to Poles, it is much more then jst a religion. It is the roots of our identity. It would be fair to say that if it wasn't for the church there would be no Poland atm. Catholicism has played monumental roles in our history. We also perceive ourselves as the Christ of nations due to our history. That is why most Poles are so devout. And most of us are very mindful of our liberal past, and being a non-catholic is absolutely not an issue.

What was this, then?

The fact of the matter is that Poland was the most tolarent country in Europe!......when England and Germany threw out all their jews, who gave them a home.....When protestants and catholics were slaughtering each other in England, Poland had something called freedom of religion. And I could go on.......all you show me is some instances in the 2RP a fragile country were most of the population didn't fully understand the values and virtues which make you Polish as they were influenced by foreign powers

The II RP was one of the most intolerant countries in Europe.

also Pilsudski was a philosemite, and although yes it would be fair to say that their were some cases of intolerance. It was all a direct result of occupation, which influenced some of the population. had they lived in a free Poland all their lives it would not be the case.

The more one reads about Poland, the more evidence there seems to be that the whole country just prides itself on intolerance.

That is absolutely not the case. We were the most tolerant country in Europe throughout history. We had the first democratic constitution in Europe, freedom of religion (centuries ahead of our time) and were also the most multicultural country in Europe. We take pride in hero's like Kosciusko of whom Benjamin Franklin wrote " The truest son of liberty I have ever known". It is Polish nature to be tolerant. Unfortunately like in every country you get a few uneducated peasants who want to vent their frustrations on other ppl because of their differences. It might seem prevalent atm in Poland because communism and WW2 wiped out a huge proportion of our elite, but this trend will not continue

Life / I saw Polish nationalism today [249]

The Polish ONR Hitlerjugend

Absolutely shameful. This is what happens when ur elite gets wiped outed by 2 tyrannies and most of the scum if left over to say and think what they please. I think the biggest crime here is their thievery of oxygen!.........Whats more shameful is that most other Poles tolerate this(I doubt this happens in Germany where denying the Holocaust is an offense). What kind of a spineless generation of Poles is this, our ancestors, fought 2 tyrannies staunchly yet this is allowed to happen. Its an absolute disgrace and the Poles who stood by and watched instead of doing something should feel the most ashamed.
