Genealogy / Moses Wertheim - Poznan [4]

Hi Wroclaw,

I did indeed look at Jewishgen and have just looked now. Every time I go onto that site I get completely lost and I am unable to find any results. Maybe I am doing something wrong?

Thanks for your quick reply. Apologies for mine delayed response, my e-mail did not notify me of your reply :)

As you can guess...I am completely new to this!

Regards and thanks again for your swift response,

Matthew.

Genealogy / Moses Wertheim - Poznan [4]

Hello all,

I am trying to trace my 4x great grandfather, Moses Wertheim, who according to the 1841-1871 census for Bristol, England, was born in Poznan, Poland/Prussia. His death certificate in England and the census all point to him being born in or around 1806, when I know Poland was not necessarily a state, is that correct? Goodness knows where I am to look for Moses - he was also Jewish, so i am not sure if baptism records will be kept for him. I have his death record which shows him to be buried in a Jewish cemetery in Bristol. He is listed as a stranger, whatever that means, I presume he was not an active worshipper at Bristol synagogue. interestingly, his surname is spelled WERHEIMER. I am not sure if this is accurate as a few details on this death record are also a bit out of sync too, but it is definitely my Moses'r record.

He married in Bristol too, in 1837, so the period from 1806-1837 in this man's life is completely blank.

This is a real mystery and I have been trying to solve it for my granny's family for a while now. I have e-mailed Polish archives but with a dodgy translator I found on the web. I have e-mailed them again this time in English and am awaiting response.

Any information anybody here could share would be warmly welcomed. I am so confused by Poland at this time, when Napoleon was playing his war games, I am not sure where records will be for a Jewish boy born in Poznan, if any were kept at all. I hope and pray there is something here for me to find, any record of his parents or when he was born I hope still exist...it's just knowing where to go.

Regards, and thankyou for reading this message.
