Armies surrendered. Neither did the state.

Erm...*sighs*...no army....no government...another country controls and governs you...Maybe Nazi Germany still existed after 45? After your description of surrender it could very well be...

BS. I just wanted to say that Poland never OFFICIALLY surrendered, that's all.

There even was a victory parade of the Wehrmacht!

Let's see:

Army surrendered? Check
No independent government? Check
Fully occupied? Check
Foreign controlled and governed? Check

What do you think is missing here?

the fact remains that much of the business, political and academic communication between 2 or more coutries is invariably conducted in english, being able to communicate sufficiently in english is therefore of greater importance to many than it is for the british to achieve similar levels in foreign language

Na ja....the most spoken native language is German and you can bet that business partners in the Swiss, Germany, Austria, Netherland, Belgium, Liechtenstein etc. speak german between them.

They have to resort to english when speaking with Brits or Americans because those barely speak german, it's a matter of necessity.

vistawide.com/german/why_german.htm

1. German is the most widely spoken language in Europe.

More people speak German as their native language than any other language in Europe. It's no wonder, since Germany's 83 million inhabitants make it the most populous European nation. But not only the residents of Germany speak German. It is also an official language of Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, and Liechtenstein. And it is the native language of a significant portion of the population in northern Italy, eastern Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, eastern France, parts of Poland, the Czech Republic, Russia, and Romania, as well as in other parts of Europe.

The role of English as a worldwide lingua franca is irreversible.

I doubt that!
Once it was Latin...it is no more!
Once it was french...it is no more!
Once it was german...it is no more!

na richtig super, ja?

ps doch

I have to apologize! :)

Neither Latin, French nor German were ever the worldwide lingua franca to the extent that English is.

The dimension differed but in the time of Latin Rome WAS the world and Latin was long after their fall a most important way to communicate.

Much longer than english is.

If an Indian meets a Dutchman, they'll speak English not German or Hindi.

And the Indian speaks english not by DEFAULT but due the colonial history and the British Empire. That goes for ALL english speaking countries outside the islands - they are not NATIVE languages!

Life / Polish people and racism. [943]

For me the fact that Poland had over 3 million Jews before WW2 is enough to prove lack of racism. No other nation would ever accept such a large number of Jews.

Not like the Nazis but "lack of racism"????

They also had commonwealth.Have you ever heard of a French-German commonwealth,or an English-French commonwealth,or even a Dutch-German commonwealth or French-Belgian?Only Scandinavian countries had some similar form of unity(where all parts were not always satisfied or not forced to accept union).

Germans lived most of their history in one commonwealth (Staatenbund) or the other...starting with Charlemagne, the holy roman empire of the German nation spanning nearly whole Europe, the Hanse, the many duchies and kingdoms included often

also neighbouring people etc...
The nation state Germany came only into existence 1871!

Why do you think there was the biggest European Jewish society in Poland before WWII ? Second after USA in all over the world.

And didn't they live mostly in their little shtetls without much contact to the Poles...with their own language (Yiddish - a German dialect), their own schools, their own professions, their own clothes? Strict Ghettos even before the Germans came? Not very assimilated I would say. Not to forget the regular pogroms!

The Jews in Germany to the contrary were totally assimilated...not many famous scientists from polish shtetls either...why is that?

From whom would you like "finger pointing" Lukasz? :)

So they loved living in Poland and liked the Poles so much that they decided to stay apart amongst themselves and not to assimilate??? Interesting theory...

The Jews in Germany to the contrary must have hated it...:(

Really astounding to read about the Polish-Jewish love story...erm...marriage here on this board!
:)

They didn't come to Poland for the love of Poles, but for the fear of Germans, English, Spaniards, French etc.

I agree!

Yes...I think so too....they are not very popular...to different from the Germans...they don't like us and we don't like them (the exceptions prove the rule).

I had the Turks in mind also as I compared the Jews with the Poles....that's why it's hard to believe that the Poles were all peachy to the Jews....

Or comments like that:

For me the fact that Poland had over 3 million Jews before WW2 is enough to prove lack of racism.

Nope...the exact opposite happens.

Either there is fully assimilation after a time or they live just side by side in more or less ignorance.
That goes well as long is the environment is stable and no group get's to hostile to the other....
But please...even in the most wealthy, most diverse society (the US) there are strong ethnic/racial tensions. What do you think will happen when the wealth is dwindling and people have to fight for scraps?

That you have people just to "educate" is just wishful thinking of multicultis who see the world through their pink glasses...and is proven wrong!

Ethnics tend to stay with each other, be it China town, the turkish ghetto or the white surburb...that is the rule!

Because of its commitment to diversity

That is crap!
The US started out as a genocidal settlements movement and how you said yourself, is one of the most racist countries on earth.
It just works till now as there is still so much wealth to distribute...wait when this will be over!

Why do you think the US is the most wealthy and successful society?

Because they came out of WWII as the real winner...

Being racist, meaning centering in ones own heritage, is nothing "unnatural" or "muddy", "bad" and "avoidable" but rather totally natural.

A war in which the enemy was racism.

Ooooooooh puleeese:

What happened only 1963???
And don't tell me the US did give a sh'i about the Jews as they entered the war....

That war was about EVERYTHING but racism, it was about the future breakup of Europe and the world, the future spheres of influences, who would get what.

The British Empire and the US couldn't allow a such potent rival run amok and squeezing them out...not to forget that nobody knew if Hitler wouldn't make it over the pond in the end.

A lot was at stake...human rights or the jews in the Ghettos interested nobody!

racism

AND that system wasn't challenged until Blacks came back from the war and realized that while they were risking their lives fighting racism in Europe they were neck deep in it at home.

Agreed!
And I don't understand how you can say this war was against racism if one of the main players was also
deeply racist openly till far after the wars end?
(And still is as you said)

Tell me...would Washington have been able to motivate the country to go to war for...say...to free the poor blacks of Europe???

racism is a byproduct of diversity

I fully agree!

But the fact of the matter is that diversity and multiculturalism have created great things.

Pray tell...what great things have the Turks in Berlin added to the german society?

Not in Berlin, sorry!

You see?

PS: "flight"??? The Turks invented flight???
PPS: "numbers"??? The Turks invented the numbers???
PPS: "submarines"??? The Turks invented submarines???

Do you have some links for that???

Google said something else:

The first submersible with reliable information on its construction was built in 1620 by Cornelius Jacobszoon Drebbel, a Dutchman in the service of James I of England.

for flight: ueet.nasa.gov/StudentSite/historyofflight.html

We have Leonardo da Vinci, the Mongolfiers, George Cayley, Otto Lilienthal, Brothers Wright...but no turks!

It is speculated that the first known use of numbers dates back to around 30000 BC, bones or other artifacts have been discovered with marks cut into them which are often considered tally marks. The use of these tally marks have been suggested to be anything from counting elapsed time, such as numbers of days, or keeping records of amounts.

Tallying systems have no concept of place-value (such as in the currently used decimal notation), which limit its representation of large numbers and as such is often considered that this is the first kind of abstract system that would be used, and could be considered a Numeral System.

for the water closet:

circa 30th century BC: A primitive dual channel, fresh water and waste, toilet system was in use in the houses at Skara Brae, Orkney, Scotland
circa 26th century BC: Flush toilets were first used in the Indus Valley Civilization. The cities of Harappa and Mohenjo-daro had a flush toilet in almost every house, attached to a sophisticated sewage system. [1]
circa 18th century BC: Flush toilet constructed at Knossos on Minoan Crete[2]
circa 15th century BC: Flush toilets used in the Minoan city of Akrotiri.
1st to 5th centuries AD: Flush toilets were used throughout the Roman Empire.

- no Turks either

Coffee is also not a Turkish invention...it didn't even grow there to begin with!
But the mechanical clock is a Turkish invention...

For the taste of European musicians I don't know...

The German language rocks!

Flight:

See...nobody knows about this ottoman flier so..frankly...there is something smelly!

And neither did the Turks invent the submarines nor the numbers...so?

It's the same with Panzers...the Germans took the idea and run with it, from the Tiger to the Leopard - German Panzers are the best. Still, the first idea was a British one...

sounds like you have to stand up straight lift your head up high just to speak a few words.

You are just looking for cheap shots in an argument...

Mark Twain:

...There are some German words which are singularly and powerfully effective. For instance, those which describe lowly, peaceful, and affectionate home life; those which deal with love, in any and all forms, from mere kindly feeling and honest good will toward the passing stranger, clear up to courtship; those which deal with outdoor Nature...
