History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1080]

Poland is an post-communism, grey, Easat European country which belonged to the Slavic, Russian, East European side ..

it's kinda true, y'all. slavic language, commies for decades, gray as all hell, far from the laid back lifestyles of western countries, weather is generally bleak and cold....a Ukranian guy has far more in common with a Pole than a westerner does, it's as simple as that.

the countries of the wine, of the chilled lifestyle, romantic .. the inhabitants of these countries are sleeping the most time in Europe.

versus countries of barszcz, meat and potatoes and pierogi. i hear ya, man. to be honest, i don't know why people get so butt hurt over this either. i mean.....it is what it is.

that doesn't even count. there's really no other way to say pierogi besides pierogi. dumplings aren't the same....so what choice does an English speaker, or Spanish speaker, or any speaker actually have?

what about track suits and hoodies with pitbulls on them, finished off by those outdated bizarrely tight fighting white puma sneakers?

Chimay? Duvel? Leffe? Kwak? Hell, even Three Philosophers (made in New York but is Belgiun style) is amazing beer.

you're smokin' crack. or disagreeing just to disagree.

yes, I agree. 8% is bad for the taste.

the Belgians seem to do just fine with 8%-9% beer.....

USA, Canada / Better life in USA or Canada? - expats opinions and your comparison [143]

This info was dated year 2000-2003

you'd like to talk about statistics that are 10-13 years old.....

in that case, let's talk about the unemployment rate in the USA in 2007, a mere 6 years ago....it was under 5%.

we could see 2/3 of the country near the poverty line in the next 20 years.

but we won't and the whole world knows it.

pundit after pundit after media outlet after media outlet for decades have been talking about how the US economy is going to crash, that everyone is going to pull all their money out of the banks and credit will dry up into nothing.....it's old hat, man. the USA will continue to be the USA for a very long time because the world, as much as they like to talk behind her back, knows how much they depend on good ole' Mickey Mouse and apple pie to keep the gears turning.

.Nobody want to move in those ``holes``

nobody wants to move to Virginia? Vermont? Hawaii? New Hampshire? And if you can stand the Mormons....Utah?

Not to mention, explain how their weather is any more "severe" than all of Canada.

USA, Canada / Better life in USA or Canada? - expats opinions and your comparison [143]

Currently unemployment in U.S. is staggering.

this conversation is laughable.

"staggering" you say? the unemployment rate as of December 2012 in the USA was 7.8% with 25 states in the USA currently under 7%. It's 7.1% in Canada. So in your words, half the states in the USA see Canada's unemployment rate as "staggering".

as a matter of fact, take a look at the top 14, they are currently under 6%:

1 NORTH DAKOTA 3.2
2 NEBRASKA 3.7
3 SOUTH DAKOTA 4.4
4 IOWA 4.9
4 WYOMING 4.9
6 OKLAHOMA 5.1
6 VERMONT 5.1
8 HAWAII 5.2
8 UTAH 5.2
10 KANSAS 5.4
11 LOUISIANA 5.5
11 MINNESOTA 5.5
11 VIRGINIA 5.5
14 MONTANA 5.7
14 NEW HAMPSHIRE 5.7

Just imagine what they think about Canada's unemployment rate!

it's also laugh out loud ridiculous to hear people comparing weather in Canuck-land to the USA's. In case you guys lost your globe, Canada is NORTH of the USA and hey, they sure seem to play a lot more hockey up there, too. me thinks most people in Canada also spend a lot more time wearing parkas and gloves than the Americans.

Love / Are Polish men handsome to you? [182]

Here's what always cracks me up about Ironside......he'll write something like this:

"From times immemorial it is wise to leave judgment on looks of men for women. What you find attractive in women, irks you in men because you are used to different standards."

and then write this:

"For me many Americans men looked like really uncanny mixtures."

in other words, an obvious plagiarism followed by a sentence written in terrible grammar.

next time at least TRY to be convincing.

One day you will grow up and understand that it's not the look that women are after in a man but the way he carries himself

said the average looking Polish guy. sorry man, couldn't help it.

The OP asked a simple question, I provided a simple observation which is, if I might say, pretty dead on. I never expressed what "women are after in a man" and trying to tell me that i don't understand what women want is absolutely unrelated to this discussion.

...and not with me.
ha ha, don't be so envious.

again, i don't know why you are making this personal. i just don't get it.

So far the only people here complaining about Polish men look are foreign males.

as if there isn't a simple explanation for that? Do you expect Polish men to say much about this subject, considering they're the ones being judged right now? Do you expect foreign females to chime in, because we all know how few and far between they are in Poland. And as far as Polish women, well chances are they're either dating a Polish guy or married to one so don't expect them to be subjective either.

if all you wanted is nice things to be said about Polish guys, you should have indicated that at the beginning of the thread, I thought this was an open discussion.

I don't know if this is any indication, but where I'm from, the disparity between looks of women versus men isn't nearly as evident as it is in Poland. Poland has beautiful women and I constantly found myself saying, "you gotta be kidding me, how is that girl with that guy?" I wouldn't say that the US has better looking women than Poland either so that would say to me that Polish men leave a little something to be desired on the average.

I always thought Polish guys needed a lesson in hygiene as well. Lots of messed up smiles and in class I smelled them all the time.

Language / How hard is it to learn Polish? [178]

I think you're not quite getting what I wrote

nah, i got what you wrote just fine.

they may be in the same language family but not on the same sub-branch)

i'm assuming you couldn't keep a straight face even as you typed that.

According to what you said, I assume you know Russian, Ukrainian and Belarussian as well as Czech and other Slavic languages

no need to speak all those languages and you know it. I used to sit down and watch 'Nova' and catch maybe 25% of the spoken words, over 50% if it's subtitled, and I'm not even a native slavic speaker. Rumor has it that the Slovakian language is even closer to Polish than Czech. My wife can understand at least 50% of spoken words in Czech and when I went to Prague with my Polish friends, they spoke Polish to the Czechs and did just fine. My brother in law is straight from Moscow, we talk about Polish vs. Russian all the time, I'm well aware of the similarities/differences.

Don't make the mistake in thinking I'm one of those dime a dozen jack ass americans that went to Poland to chase tail, spent 9 months teaching in some garbage callan school coming in every morning stinking like Zywiec and gave Polish the ole' college try and failed miserably, only now to come on here and tell everyone how impossible it is. I studied my pants off to learn Polish (yes, I LEARNED Polish) and know just how difficult it is compared to other languages I've studied. So for everyone shopping the bookstores for 'Hurra! Po Polsku' or 'Isc czy chodzic?' or '301 Polish Verbs' or 'Colloquial Polish', to answer your question, yes, Polish is a b!tch to learn.

Language / How hard is it to learn Polish? [178]

I'm in the beginning stages of learning?

YES.

British people find it more difficult to learn Polish rather than Russians. It's easier to switch from a language of complex case system to one that has got them reduced rather than the other way round.

are you being serious with this statement? you think that because Polish has cases that THAT'S why it's easier for Russians to understand Polish? haha, how about the fact that both languages are in the same damn language family and half the words sound similar, sometimes the same! Not only do both languages have case systems, they both have very very similar case systems because.....drum roll.....they're in the same language family.

Here's the real truth.....an English speaker is going to struggle like hell with Polish because Polish is hard as hell and in a completely different language family, not to mention there's pretty much zero exposure to Polish for the average English speaker and unlimited exposure to English for a Pole, or a German, or a Russian, or whoever.

Let's answer the OP's original question: Polish is hard as hell to learn for non slavic speakers. There's no other way around it.

Law / Polish Visa Refused, Going To Make Appeal, What should I do ? [81]

I don't doubt it, but there are a lot of people on this forum that flat out won't believe, or accept, that it's possible. The ONLY possibility is that the USA has a full blown conspiracy to keep out Poles from the Visa Waver Program. Any other explanation.....now that would be impossible.

USA, Canada / Getting a VISA to USA by a Polish person nowadays [339]

Poland's unemployment rate as of September 2012 was 12.4%, or roughly 5 million people. Are you saying that if another 3 million unemployed people left Poland to live elsewhere, Poland would gladly pack their bags because it will lower the unemployment rate?

Polish government is worried about people emigrating to the USA and at the same time is not worried about the same people emigrating to others countries in Europe.

are you suggesting that the Polish government simply "didn't care" when millions of Poles ran to Great Britain as soon as the borders opened up? you obviously need a refresher course on how socialized countries operate.

USA, Canada / Getting a VISA to USA by a Polish person nowadays [339]

there are a few sides to that argument, though. how many Lithuanians have the means to pack up their life and move to the USA, find a Lithuanian community that will eventually supply them with work, resources, social circles.....ask any American where there are Polish communities, at the very least Brooklyn and Chicago will come to mind.....but Lithuanians? What's a Lithuanian? Is that in Europe?

it's been covered a hundred times on this thread........but again, you must at the very least consider the possibility that Poland's government is the driving force against Poles getting visa free travel to the USA.

"artyści scen polskich"

learning phrases is a good way to get some grammar to stick, as long as you eventually understand why it is in fact written that way. if all you do is cram phrases, you will be caught in a small bubble. when you are in conversation and need to use the word but in a different context, or a different quantity, you start scrambling.

you "concede" Lyzko, but what do I read in the very next post? Someone correcting your grammar. And then you kept on going. Gotta stop, holmes.

Lyzko, you are a nice guy, and we all try to protect you and give you credits for your valiant efforts. But "artyścia"? Where on earth did you get it from?

uhmm hmmm.

when i read your post, you looked like you were here in the USA trying to get all sorts of people visa's to the usa, some of them being illegal. i posted accordingly because trust me man, you wouldn't be the first person on this forum that just can't understand why the process is so hard, all the while having no business being here.

if you're legit, my apologies. btw, what is your job title.....do you work for the USCIS or something?

you really should stay away from these types of threads, Lyzko. you constantly make grammatical errors when trying to provide examples. no offense dude, but seriously, every time you type something while tryping to help someone out, somebody else needs to correct your polish grammar.

Shapeshifter wrote:

i'll tell it to you straight, Shapeshifter. based on this question, you haven't even begun to understand polish grammar, therefore, you're asking the wrong question. you're so far behind that you wouldn't even understand the explanation.

But I have been instrumental in getting legal and illegal mexicans Visas (my mum married a legal and his cousins were NOT).

and you don't think the feds take that into consideration as you continue to do your paperwork?

of course "it is hard" for people such as yourself.....and it should be. your situation doesn't exactly put you at the front of the line.

USA, Canada / If America is so bad, why move here? [254]

The typical American will have around $40,000 in debt with significant interest rates by the time they graduate college. This typical American will then find a job that is not what he (I will use the male identifier for all people) got his degree in and does not pay enough to what he expected upon graduating with his BA.Our country is a country that is all about indentured-servanthood and having no money and lots of nice things.

and yet, sooooo many people have come here.....and millions continue to.....every......single......year. it MUST be a total $hit hole.

reading posts like this absolutely crack me up. this guy's got it all figured out. just another young kid who just got done reading a month's worth of statistics about "us vs. them" and is just running with it. He's an over the top holy roller on top of that.

listen young whipper snapper....your life is not going to make some miraculous change by moving to Poland. you are who you are and if you think going to Poland is going to somehow transform your life, you are mistaken. all the things you want in life are nowhere more readily available than in the good ole' USA. it's simple dude.....don't be a statistic! just because "the average American does x, y, and z" doesn't mean you have to as well. I lived in Poland for 4 years and never wore a track suit, didn't practice religion, didn't watch soccer, thought Polish beer kinda sucked, refused to eat paczki for breakfast.....I could go on and on. You're trying to run from something and whatever it is, it is going to get right on the plane with you if you decide to move. Do what you want, but "the cure" doesn't lie in Poland, a place you know next to nothing about.

News / 1.3% birth rate = Poland's slow death [221]

I think we really oughta to return to a house model where the man works and the woman takes care of the house and the children.

it sounds nice but there's a reason most people don't live that way anymore. like anything else, it comes down to money.

the middle class especially is and has been deteriorating which is why one middle class salary cannot support a family anymore. the days of "Daddy is a fireman and mommy is home washing dishes with a bun in the oven" are over. people aren't making conscious decisions not to live like that, they simply can't swing it on single income.

I mean, why would anyone

anyone? oh I don't know, what about women ages 18-25 that have no interest in children yet and need money to....uhhmmm.....eat and stuff. how about when she's already had her children and they're all in school? for a 35 year old woman with 2 kids, both old enough to get on a bus and go to school, what lies ahead for her if she doesn't work? some may enjoy just sitting at home, but to question why anyone would opt to go to work is a bit extreme, no?
