12 People were murdered last year in Malmo. 17 people were murdered in half an hour last week in Florida. The murder rate in this medium-size Swedish town is about 15 times less than that of most comparible American cities.

That shouldn't be a surprise obviously Sweden is much safer than Florida because they are gun controls there. in the US you can keep your guns if it makes you feel hard but we're all happy with the laws over here.

Simply measure the number of incidents, injuries and fatalities - the US is multiple times higher than any other OECD nation. Why might that be, because they have no controls.

All of the other things you write are exaggerated or not true (Malmo - a no go zone ? Really ?) but I'm not going to wade through the Internet to check them - I can spend some time with my kids knowing that they are in a safe country without lunatics having access to guns.

Czech And Switzerland both have considerable gun controls compared to the US. France and the UK both have Wailoa gun crime than the US - as in fact does every other developed nation. So actually gonna control is a fantastic success if measured by reduction in lives lost.

And that's why in Poland there is never going to be free access to guns.

By the way, I don't know any professionals who are training to use firearms. The only people who might be interested in that are not jobs wearing what right wing T-shirts. With Macierewicz out of the way i think the idea of his weekend toy soldiers will quietly be disbanded.

But they are all responsible law abiding owners up until the moment they pull into the school car park - we only find out they are nutcases post factum.

I think it will take a few decades in the US for change to come. In Poland thankfully all parties except the Kukiz morons agree that gun controls should not be loosened.

There are not many migrants in West Virginia either, but it has a gun crime rate 20 times that of comparable coal mining towns in Poland.

Stop lecturing us about migrants and deal with the terrorists in your own country first.

But Atch is right. When i was at college in the US i would say maybe 20 percent of people i talked to shared your views. Guns were banned on campus but now I see there has also been some clash with state law.

But in Europe that kind of view is an extreme position - I cannot think of anybody sensible that I have dealt with who would share it in Poland for example. Turning up to university with a gun would be a socially acceptable as shooting heroin in a lecture theatre.

Thats very comforting if your teenage kid was shot in the back in her school corridor.

Also not true - there are hundreds of innocent people killed every year in crossfire in drug wars, taking out drugs and suicides the murder rates from firearms are still 5-6x higher than in Europe

Absolutely - they will have to arrive at this solution themselves. Segregation seemed completely natural to Americans but eventually the tide turned, the electoral and business logic for it melted and the system changed.

Sig I don't think you have kids. If you did would you want their science teacher to be a good teacher or to be confident with a gun ? Would you want more guns in your kids school or less ? Such simple questions to the rest of the world but polity and culture in the US are so different.

Is it conceivable that a teacher might lie when asked if he is an alcoholic? Ever met many alkies who will admit it ?

The mental gymnastics used to avoid a simple truth would be hilarious if there were not 30.000 people a year dying.

Maybe a simple solution is to ban schools.

But its not binary and its not clear. If i went into the streets of your honetown and plastered a bunch of posters saying you were a child molester that would be malicioud but would not harm you physically. People could believe it or not but you only need a few idiots to believe it for that to have life changing consequences.

I remember about 20 years back hindu clerics whipping up a crowd who literally dismantled a mosque stone by stone and caused riots that killed a few hundred people. Should that he allowed ?

Your idea that free spech should be unlimited assumes people to be noble - they are not. Saying it is binary belongs in the high school debating society

He has not been in power since 2007. According to wiki he joined parliament in 1997, 8 years after the round table, ,held no office in PRL times and was a kid when his parents changed their name.

But for you he is a problem because he was born Jewish - I don't like the guy myself but he seems like a fairly dedicated public servant

I have family who lived in those times.

Who from the 60s who changed their name is still in power today ? They would have to be extremely old !

Is changing your name a crime ? If so it's one committed by literally millions of Polish diaspora all over the world.

There is no logic in your position on Jews in Poland today.

And how long does this continue ? One generation ? 3 generations ? 30 generations ? Most intelligent people can make up their own mind about the world - things I remember from my Grandma ? Share your toys with your brother and don't mix your drinks.

So what you are saying is that someone born in Poland, with Polish citizenship, speaking Polish, raising Polish kids, paying Polish tax is not Polish ? What if their grandparents were not Ubeks but were roadsweepers ?

What is weird is that attitude is coming also from Americans - I thought a sacred tenant of American life was to be who you want to be based on your own merits.

Even if someones Grandfather was hanging AK soldiers why does that matter now ? Im sure i have some ancestors who have done bad things but its nothing to do with me.

For the same reason i dont care what Kaczynskis dad was doing - all in the past.

No i have not read Fear. I read Neighbors and was not sure about it - i have family from that part of Poland and kbow relations between the communities were very difficult.

No mental gymnastics required - I visited Polin because I had some spare time and I felt like it. Just like today I fancied taking my kids to the mall and doing some shopping andd visiting Pizza Hut - I know that will shortly be on the list of proscribed activities too.

As for what Polish Jewish acquaintances are doing or think about this law, I have no idea and I am not going to ask them because I don't care. One for example is a tax lawyer, another works in real estate and my interactions normally start with some chit chat about family and holidays and move on to whatever business we have to cover. It's called normal life and I recommend more people try it..

But a jew who lives here now and was born after 1945 murdered nobody, betrayed nobody. I know such people and they are true Poles - speaking Polish, living as good citizens, employing people and contributing much more to Polish society than an expat Pole spewing senseless and nihilistic ancient hatreds from his bedroom in Chicago.

Most white Zimbabweans would identity themselves as Zimbabwean in my experience- they certainly wouldnt say they were Dutch. Your obsession with blood and miscegenation is rooted in the 1930s - an era that most people except PiS and Orban would like to leave behind.

Amazed at the number of sensible people here talking about collective responsibility, reparations etc - what my grandparents did is nothing to do with me. Try to live your own lives right rather than rewriting the past

Dirk in 1939 there were more than 100.000 Jewish soldiers in the Polish army.

There were none in WWI because Poland did not have an army then.

Not sure why these racist rants are allowed really - for the first few pages of this thread there was a sensible discussion about the law. Then they cracked open the krupnik at the Red Apple buffet and all sorts of nonsense theories started.
