Love / What do Polish guys think of Irish girls? [187]

Even more ironic that the said Irish man spent a great deal of his life (freely and happily) in England ;0) His works are probably more read here than they are in the country he was born...So no, I dont personally find it ironic quoting Oscar Wilde. :D

What's Ironic? I know exactly what his nationality is...I dont suppose good old Oscar really cared what the masses thought of him..

Language / Paddy, Jock and Taffy; origin and translation to Polish [27]

The lime/limey reference is pretty widely accepted though I think.

Its hardly a current insult..possibly many moons ago, although you do get the odd comedian on here using it...I wouldnt say its accepted / unaccepted, Id say we're indifferent, but I find it quite strange that people still use it..

so did i, but wiki or whatever told me different

I always thought Jock was like John / Jack..

Language / Paddy, Jock and Taffy; origin and translation to Polish [27]

No one use the term Taffy these days..and they certainly dont have kids singing rhyms like that either..

(it did make me lol though)

In Ireland, the term Brits is usually derogatory

That would be in the South then, because most Brits in the North are pretty happy to be called Brits..No?

Jock

Is a diminutive of John.

Paddy

Is a diminutive of Patrick (they also use Packi too)

Taffy

The term "Taffy" may be a merging of the common Welsh name "Dafydd" and the Welsh river "Taff" on which Cardiff is built, and seems to have been in use by the mid-eighteenth century.

Taffy was a Welshman, Taffy was a sham;
Taffy came to my house and stole a piece of lamb;
I went to Taffy's house, Taffy was away,
I stuffed his socks with sawdust and filled his shoes with clay.

[...]

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taffy_was_a_Welshman

(they even had alternative endings!)

I went to Taffy's house, Taffy was in bed,
I took the marrow bone and beat about his head

It would seem not a lot of people liked Taffy :(

Love / What do Polish guys think of Irish girls? [187]

What a difference does it make ?

Well Irons, some people care what other nations think, we Brits tend not to give a flying phuck..Simply because we're pretty secure about who we are...If someone a few 1,000 miles away wants to make fun..hey, thats fine...As Oscar Wilde once said, "There's only one thing worse than being talked about and that's not being talked about!" :D

Love / Being Taken For A Idiot by my Polish girlfriend? [37]

Its advice for normal people...stupid games are stupid games regardless of age...As for middle age, your average somali male lives to the age of 48 so middle age for your lot is 24 and not 30...

Work / Black English Teacher going to Wroclaw [247]

Things take time and you can't force change,

Lax immigration laws force change, its not like the indiginous Brits had a choice.

20 years ago in the UK,if a black woman/man and white woman/man, where walking down the street, hand in hand, it would turn heads

No it didnt, there are plenty of mixed raced kids in there 20s...maybe had you said 50 years ago..I might have agreed.

If someone needs to seek advice on a forum when they are married to a Polish national, I would question the intentions of his posts.

Maybe he's looking for opinions other than that of his wife and her family.

And you already forgot how Indian people suffered under Brits?Ofc,it is because you are English now.

She's half Indian which would make her half English if in fact her mother is English..By virtue of being born in England does not make someone English (not having a go at Atosha, just pointing out a fact)..As for what we owe India, we owe them nothing, please look up the word "Independence" they gained this decades ago.

They stay here, live here and enjoy here with out any interference or any racism.

Really? Thats why you have a caste called the "untouchables"...

The fact is the doors are being closed on them in the UK. They are being priced out of university courses, and the numbers of skilled persons visa's have been slashed.

Please dont believe the hype - tier 1 / 4 visas are still readily available so are spousal / dependant visas..As for universities, most come and study micky mouse courses that they can pay for with the money they earn whilst working here (you think they stick to the 10 hours allowed?)..

Friends please tell me the best way to enter in Poland with out any problem.

Apply for a visa, there is a Polish consulate in Mubia and in New Delhi...google is your friend!

polishconsulate.com/about.html

And stop saying English people are racist

A lot are and so are Indians..

Yea but only because you don't want to let him to England so he has to marry Polish broad first and then go to UK.

He doesnt actually want to come to England, he wants to set up home in Poland and have lots of kids and invite his family over to live :D

Love / Being Taken For A Idiot by my Polish girlfriend? [37]

It is about demand and supply, no effort is made as you bang someone else you just creating demand for yourself and she is supply just like a farmer just seeding so you can bang her later without any effort of pursuing her.

You and I are on a different page sweetie...I dont see the point in the whole chase thing, I already know what I want and I personally perfer stable people who know their own mind...Nothing romantic about someone playing games, how is that a good basis for a relationship? I like games if they involve notes that give me little messages telling me I should take my passport to work..

agree here... but we know only his side of the story... i wonder what hers is...

She's insecure...She likes the ego boost..simples! Plus she's probably got an guy on the go giving her the same attention...but I think weekend guy is more special ;0)

My mum gave me some advice when I was 18, if he's not calling you, then its time to move on because he obviously doesnt think much of you...best advice I ever had!

UK, Ireland / How long would it take for an English style restaurant in Poland to go bust? [80]

Right I had another thread Looking for chef jobs, Convex made a suggestion to perhaps go into catering so my question is this. If a Restaurant/ Cafe were to open in Wroclaw serving top qaulity home made food at reasonable prices with Polish and english speaking staff how long would it last is there a market for this? was over before and I'm just not sure. From where I stand the Polish eat at home and like what they like.

From an English persons perspective (tourist who has visited Wraclaw) - its got some excellent little restaurants, for me it knocked spots off Krakow (no offence to Krakow) - so you have some very tough competition. Im not one to go for the whole "lets find somewhere English to eat" but there are those that do..Im sure ex-pats would love it..nothing like a taste of home..

I think this is a good idea:

English speaking staff might be a novelty value especially if you opened near a University.
Affordable food in a funky environment with some subtle music and interesting decor as well as a good range of teas and coffee.

But remember English speaking might mean they're from Asia so stew and dumplings and shephards pie on the menu might not go down so well...

I think to get locals in you have to be competitive (no different to the UK these days) and have an edge of what's already there...small menu with a mix of Polish traditional and English traditional dishes....perfect!

Thats not a bad idea, you have two types in the UK - the stationary burger vans (they usually knock out great cheese burgers)

You mean cheap "barely legal burgers" that only people who've had at least 10 pints will drink?

News / Poland hosts lowest proportion of foreigners in the EU [115]

Whereas 31.9 million foreigners are living in the EU -

Is that legal immigrants? I very much doubt those figures are correct...They reckon we have at least 2 million in the UK that are under the radar.

just 0.1 of those living in Poland (35,000) are not Polish citizens, shows Eurostat, the EU’s statistical office.

Hmmm..EU statistics..says it all really...Most countries cant even get their own figures correct so how can one rely on the EU to tell us how many foreigners we have in our countries!

However i'm certain this will eventually change

You can be damn sure of that!

It would be wise for poland to have stricter immigration criteria than western europe to avoid bringing in uneducated/useless 3rd worlders.

Thats up to Poland, laws take time to pass, so they better get their act together!

Love / Being Taken For A Idiot by my Polish girlfriend? [37]

This is what you do you start date someone else and have fun with new date and make sure she knows about it.

So much effort, such a waste of energy! If someone is playing such stupid games, my advice is move on to someone who is more mature and knows their own mind, because lets face it we all know, if we like someone we're happy to accept an offer to spend time in their company...Or at least thats what "normal" people do..

News / Poland goes bankrupt? [110]

I'm 24 years old and still have no driving license!!!

Start saving and get it done, its the best thing in the world to have, you may not always use it, but its there and may help one day securing a job...

well they haven;t managed to distract society from the fact that since new year vat will be 23% (now is 22%)

We're going from 17.5 to 20% after new year, tax is going up 1% and NI is increasing in the UK too..So all in all we're being shafted left right and centre, oh and they've just raised my pension age by 5 years...

Ah, no rush, public transport in Poland is generally decent and inexpensive :)

Thats not the point, having a driving license is a benefit, as I said to zet, it can open doors where jobs are concerned, plus it gives you more freedom...

He says: "I think we are absolutely heading towards Argentinian scenario, and surely at least Hungarian. I think that worst times for our economy are yet before us. Crisis comes to Poland with delay but its effects will not be less dramatical than in Hungary or Greece."

From what I can tell Poles are quite thrifty and not as credit happy as certain other countries, so I think its rather someone over reacting...

News / POLISH ART is not well represented in the West (especially in the US). Why? [25]

One question: why is Polish art not very well represented in the West? Especially in N.America. There's too much emphasis on Anglo, French, Dutch and German artists (photographers and painters). Is it a form of discrimination? I think it might be.

You forgot Italian and Spanish.

It might because they have more exposure? Their style was preferred?

Wilhelm Sasnal
Igor Mitoraj
Magdalena Abakanowicz
Rafał Olbiński

are very well represented.

I think the point he was trying to make is that they are not on the tip of the tongue of all Europeans like Picaso, Van Gough, Botticelli, da Vinci, even a 5 year old could point one of their paintings out.

I did actually create a threat about Polish art a little while ago but it gain hardly any interest at all.

Life / The Polish Dream - move out from Poland as fast as possible [74]

it does not create opportunities for young people...

We have an office in Warsaw, they have a graduate programme, I dont imagine they are the only company that do that kind of thing, so maybe people have to create opportunities for themselves, there are plenty of Poles that are doing just fine in Poland.

One week ago i was speaking to my friends little brother what he wanted to do after he finished school. He told me that he would like to go to the U.K and find a job. I told him that i don't think its a good idea since many Poles return empty handed, but he told me that all his friends in his class had the same plans like him to move out from Poland as fast as possible and that he didn't want to waste his time in Poland.

Instead he can waste his money and his time looking for work in the UK..Maybe direct him to some web pages explaining that the UK is going through its worst recession, possibly ever!

I blame the americans....

You just have to blame someone David! Have you ever heard of accountability?

Language / Polish slang phrases - most popular. [606]

The English bobbies once had copper-coloured (brass) buttons on their uniforms, hence the term copper. Or at least that's what one urban legend claims.

Isnt it strange as an English person I have never heard your version...But...

Cop or Copper
While commonly believed to be an acronym for Constable On Patrol, the term refers to "one who captures or snatches". This word first appeared in the early 18th century, and can be matched with the word "cap", which has the same meaning and whose etymology can be traced to the Latin word 'capere'. (The word retains this meaning in other contexts: teenagers "cop a feel" on a date, and they have also been known to "cop an attitude".)

But, I can see where you got your version from:

Variation: Copper. It is also believed that the term Copper was the original, unshortened word, popularly believed to represent the copper badges American officers used to wear at the time of origin, but in fact probably used in Britain to mean "someone who cops" long before this.

Love / Filipina married a Polish man, need more advice [90]

His story about having to stay with his wife even though they're divorced can't be true. The government gives money to women who need it so that they can pay their bills and buy food, especially if they have children. That's why women come here to have kids.

This happens in the UK, but I knew a couple that lived together for a year after their divorce, simple because of financial reasons - large mortage and kids to support.

If he had really told his wife about you, she would have left him and maybe taken him to court and sued him because that's what women do in the U.S.

But they're not in the UK, they're in England and they're not American, different culture.

but it's very common in the U.S. for a 45 year old man who has been married to the same woman for awhile to say these things.

True, its the same all over the world, its called a mid life crisis.

A man will usually look for someone who lives in his city. If he looked for someone overseas it's because it's easier to hide you that way.

The Philippines is a bit far to go for a bit of slap and tickle though, wouldnt you agree? Unless this guy is quite wealthy and can afford to do it and judging by the OPs comments, he doesnt fall in that category..

Yeah I am new in this forum. What's the difference between old and new member

If you are renting out your property in the UK you MUST inform your mortgage company

Not to mention his insurance company (buildings), if he doesn't do that if his fixtures and fittings go missing (Ive know of people rip houses to the bare brick in the 6 years I worked for an Insurance Loss Adjusters) his insurance will be null and void and he wont be able to claim a single penny.

Food / Any królik (rabbit) fanciers on PF? [76]

Swans, however, are 'royal birds' simply because only the Royal Family had the right to eat them. The British Royal Family

??? to be precise, one Swan was offered once a year to the Royal family, I very much doubt this is practiced these days...So to state the Royal family eat swans is a bit stupid.

Anyone got a good rabbit recipe?

You cant beat rabbit stew, I find it a bit tough if its not braised for a long time, its actually having a bit of a revival in the UK, it was popular after WWII because meat was in short supply but it fell out of favour and was seen as a poor mans meat when things got better..Now its seen as sustainable and healthy..

farm-bred rabbit

Why would anyone want that? I prefer wild rabbit that has had a happy and organic life, not some animal who was raised in a controlled environment..

Child Benefits Child Trust Fund and Child Benefit etc? Will we lose that and is there a Polish equivalent?

If you're not paying tax and NI in the UK you are not eligable for them, as for Poland, from what I gather from a friend its means tested so if you earn enough to live comfortably in London, you wont qualify for anything in Poland. Plus I think the trust fund is being abolished and if you earn over £44K you wont be getting child benefit anyway in a little while, even if you do contribute in the UK

PropertyWe have a property in the UK we will probably choose to rent out for the first year, at least until we know the job works out and we are settled. Has anyone done this before and are the tax implications complicated? I've looked on the gov websites but am getting properly confused between residential and overseas lettings.

If you are letting out your property, you are liable for tax on that, its classed as earnings (got a friend who is going to work in our Aus office who is in the same position).

Im sure Harry will be able to help you with what areas are decent.

Australia / POLISH GIRL NEEDING INFORMATION ON IMMIGRATION TO AUSTRALIA [6]

if yes, i wanted to ask how did you find employer willing to sponsor you and who waited for you as for a worker 2-3 months before you atarted to work. processing the visa takes 8-12 weeks so how did you arrange things ?

bbcmigration.com/australia-immigration/eligibility-point-calculator-australia.html

(this gives you an idea)

Check on the web site you have the right skills and points required and then:

Visas for Australia can take up to 3 months or more to be honest...Im just talking from a inter-company transfer to an overseas office perspective and work colleges who have gone there on their on their own initiative...At the end of the day it depends on the processing time, my advice is get a good immigration solicitor who know their stuff and doesnt just want to take every penny you have and let them deal with it...Speak to the Austrailian Embassy in your own country and ask who they would recommend...They'll probably be able to point you in the right direction...

I find that hard to believe to be honest...Due the restrictions of becoming EUA citizen, Saudi has a very small population, amongst which a very large amouth of wealth is distributed..So I just dont get the whole GDP thing, can you post a link please.

there..hey..call a spade a spade!)

We need to be more cognizant of local artisans and stop buying the mass produced junk. Give your local artisans and craftsmen a try!

I do that when I can but I also buy Fair Trade..

T...

Your outlook is phucked up...We dont have it soft in the west..we work long hours and hard..but we get paid what we are worth (most of the time)...Also I have no issue with coffee going up..for me its a treat as I dont drink it that often same as eating chocolate (neither are good for you)..What we need to do away with is the disposable society we live in..Its destroying the planet..And keeping people in poverty in certain countries..we replaced, quality with quantity...Just imagine...a washing machine that lasts 20 years but costs $1,500...would you pay it? Probably not..because you have the false economy lie that ingrained...
