Flight: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hezarfen_Ahmet_Celebi

The number zero: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al-Khwarizmi

Submarine (I should have qualified) Turks were the first to use torpedos on submarines:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Submarine#Early_history_of_submarines_and_the_first_submersibles

"Nordenfelt then built Nordenfelt II (Abdülhamid) in 1886 and Nordenfelt III (Abdülmecid) in 1887, a pair of 30 metre (100 ft) submarines with twin torpedo tubes, for the Ottoman navy. Abdülhamid became the first submarine in history to fire a torpedo submerged."

It's actually one of the few time in history in which white people AREN'T the inventers of some kind of destructive force.

Coffee, flight, numbers, the mechanical clock, the water closet. Leukemia treatments are mostly Turkish in origin. Also submarine technology originated in Turkey. Also Turks heavily influenced Europe and Germany's classical music including Mozart and Beethoven.

USA, Canada / Do many Polish people in America hate Americans? [592]

if you don't like it, leave.

That's one option. Another, which is all but unique in America, is you can change it. If you don't like something vote against it, lobby against it, run for office, or start a letter campaign. America has been changing for 250 years, it can change some more.

What happened only 1963???

I'm not sure I understand that.

Yes, I oversimplify a very complicated war when I say that the sole enemy was racism. However, you are just as guilty when you say it had nothing to do with racism. Case in point, the image you so callously try to throw in my face represents a segment of segregation that existed officially in America for hundred years, AND that system wasn't challenged until Blacks came back from the war and realized that while they were risking their lives fighting racism in Europe they were neck deep in it at home. Besides, I've already conceded that America is a racist nation. The image you produced is the product of it. However that racism is a byproduct of diversity, diversity that contributed beyond words to culture, politics, economy. I'm not here to judge societies by their worst attributes. Nor am I here to excuse societies because of their best attributes. But the fact of the matter is that diversity and multiculturalism have created great things.

USA, Canada / Do many Polish people in America hate Americans? [592]

Immigrants in America have always faced resistance from more conservative groups. It happens today, it happened when most immigrants were from Europe. Surely, there are bad stories. And bad people. America's redeeming quality from prejudice and racism, has always been oppurtunity. People come here because they believe that if they work hard they can make a better life for themselves and their children and that is usually the case. The resistance, while not forgivable, is part of the process. Sometimes immigrants make a better life for themselves withen a single generation, other times it takes longer. But America, for all her faults, has nearly always provided the thing people come here looking for; hope and opportunity.

Because they came out of WWII as the real winner...

A war in which the enemy was racism.

Being racist, meaning centering in ones own heritage, is nothing "unnatural" or "muddy", "bad" and "avoidable" but rather totally natural.

Of course it's natural. But does that make it right? Babies NATURALLY want to put a bunch of crap in their mouths. Should they? Is it out of ignorance? That's a crude example, but it isn't that far fetched. People are naturally fearful and reserved about things they don't understand. That's natural. But the roadblocks and differences between races, those are man made, thousands of years ago perhaps but man made none the less.

But please...even in the most wealthy, most diverse society (the US) there are strong ethnic/racial tensions. What do you think will happen when the wealth is dwindling and people have to fight for scraps?

Why do you think the US is the most wealthy and successful society? Because of its commitment to diversity that has allowed a wealth of ideas and viewpoints. Yes, there are racial tensions. America is the most racist nation on earth, but it is also the most progressive. For every action there is a reaction and people who fight it, but racist sticks in the mud are simply not a high enough cost to not move forward as human beings.

Love / Are there Polish women who date black guys? [281]

it isnt racism to oppose perversion the black man has his own women y regard white women as superior these interracial relationships are founded on abnormal perverted lust and only rough trampy women engage in this behaviour

If that ISN'T racism, I'm not sure I'd like to know what is!

No worries, Julie. Your family is comendable for capturing the "Blood Countess." I think is so cool that you're a descendant of such a historic family.

While, I've spent more than my fair share of time deep in the Ozarks, I was raised an Iowan. Plus, most of my MO time was spent in the Northern half around you in St. Peters, F15guy.

Hey, us Californians gotta stick together, even if the people out here still think of me as a "slow, little" Iowan. I've read about Elżbieta Batory--bad lady. I'm partial to her grandfather, though.

my family helped to lock up Elizabeth Bathory

You did what?

But to Julie's point, prejudist people are everywhere. In California plenty of people think I'm dumb because I come from the Midwest. And people in the Midwest think I'm lazy because I know live in California. Ay ay ay!

Plus, LAGirl, while I appreciate your opinion and I know where you're coming from, plus, your heads in the right place so I don't want to be preachy, BUT to say "I hate antisemitic people" continues the cycle of hatred perpetrated by antisemitic people. I hate antisemitism. I don't hate people.

I think the issue is, capellanna, that when you announce yourself as "atypical" simply because you're not a racist, uneducated, complaining bigot, it would ruffle some feathers around here. Regardless of your intention, your first post, while informative and well though out, comes off a bit snooty and high and mighty. Again, regardless of the intention in which it was written, I certainly was left thinking that as a someone who would describe himself as a Pole I must really be awlful. One shouldn't be so cynical and negative about one's own people. You mention how homogenous Poland is but fail to mention that this is a fairly recent phenomena, that before WW2 Poland was one of the most diverse and tolerant nations on earth. We Poles are proud, we understand there's things in our history and people in our present that don't do us any service, but we don't like having just that side of it thrown in our faces.

Life / Polish movies with English subtitles [87]

Also Criterion issues a box set of three films by Wadja- "Generation," "Kanal," and "Ashes and Diamonds." A&D in my opinion is the greatest Polish film of all time and Kanal is just a few steps behind, although I wish they offered Man of Iron instead of Generation but what can you do. All three have English subtitles as well as great bonus features. They're expensive (around 50 to 70 USD) and you can't buy them separately (at least not through Criterion which does the best job of DVD transfer in the business) but I think they're worth it. If you're into expensive Polish films, the ten part "Decologue" is also breathtaking and it can be ordered through amazon with subtitles, but it will set you back upwards of 100 bucks.

USA, Canada / Polish Tutor in California [23]

phillygirl, I'd like to learn Polish for fun. When my grandmother moves on, no one in my family will be able to speak Polish and this would be a shame, I'd like to remedy that. I speak a little Polish, but I mean just a little. I know hello, goodbye, I'd like something to drink/eat, where is ______ street? Please, thank you. Just very basic stuff. I can't read or write any of it. I'd love to meet with you. I'm a fast learner and I could pay you. We'll have to keep in touch until June.

Life / Polish and Czechs [190]

What nationality likes us?

Liechtenstein loves us.
Czechs and Poles have an uneasiness because they were fellow Communist sufferers. Anytime a group of many factions suffers, there is a resentment among these groups (just look at the recent Poles and the Holocaust thread). This is why Ukranians and Poles have a rift (although that one's more complicated and longer). From the mid 1800s through Communism all these Slavic Nations were struggling for Independance and Poland was lucky enough to achieve it quickly so the other nations resent it. That's a simple, slightly Polish-biased version, but hits the mark a bit, I think.

Life / Poles are not racist [873]

Just because you're a feminist doesn't mean you can't be feminine, I say. It's about equality, understanding that we're different but still being treated the same.

As far as racism in Poland, I suppose I can't say. But there are racist people everywhere, why would Poland be any different. For my part I can say that America is maybe the most racist country on Earth. I surely hope that no country is worse than the US in this field. There are 350 million people here and many different cultures and peoples so racism is bound to happen. I love a America, I really do, but it's racist as hell. It's as bad now as it was 60 years ago, don't let any one fool you. As for Poland, historically, she has been as tolerant as any nation but that doesn't mean she's devoid of racism and to think otherwise is irresponsible. Poland may be better than anywhere else but she certainly isn't perfect. And don't we all want perfection? Shouldn't we all try for a world with zero racism? And Poland certainly fails that test.

News / 10,000 ISRAELIS READY TO CLAIM FOR POLISH CITIZENSHIP AND POLISH LAND! [628]

Doesn't anyone realize that just 100 years ago Poland was as diverse as any nation in Europe? Just 70 years ago? When Julie describes Southern California, it might as well be Poland in 1923. It was a giant melting pot of people of different faiths, creeds, and nationalities. What happened is due to giant powers on either side, Poland went from being one of the most diverse countries to one of the most homogenized. It's a shame, but all the people who thought differently or were different from the approved list of people from both Germany and Russia were forced out, left on their own, or were killed. Poland not long ago was as diverse and tolerant as can be, why couldn't it become this way once again?

UK, Ireland / Polish and Irish should love each other [65]

Ireland and Poland are kindred spirits. They are very much the same. Poles and Irishmen have been through nearly the same struggles and burdens, there should be no hatred, only respect and admiration.

What kind of present? A small present would probably suffice, but something too big could scare her away if you're only in the courting phase.

Here's the thing about Poland, if you don't come with flowers you might as well not come at all. Always flowers, all the time. A gift would be too forward, but flowers are nearly mandatory.

Thanks, Tom. I've looked into Rosetta Stone, but it's so expensive. I guess you've got to spend money to learn a different language, though. Thanks everyone for your advice. beckski, I go to that church, so I'll have to look at the bulletin board, thanks.

I live in LA and want to learn Polish. I have CDs and books and know a little but have no idea if I'm pronouncing things correctly. Learning languages on your own is so difficult and I'm looking for a tutor in the Los Angeles area to help me out. Any suggestions?

Food / What is your favorite Polish Vodka? [653]

Chopin is my personal favorite. I prefer the smoothness of a potato vodka compared to a grain vodka like Belvedere. Don't get me wrong, if there's Belvedere around, I'm going to drink it, but I prefer Chopin above all else. It's so difficult to find Polish vodka in the States, anyway, I take what I can get.

History / Whom do the people in Poland hate more: Germans or Russians? [869]

The problem is, scorpek, in the case of the Russians, things are still happening. Just a few weeks ago they denied their involvement in the Katyn massacre and have threatened Poland if they allowed for the US missile shields to be built there. As a Pole, I don't hate anybody, and I wouldn't assume anything about a person just because he comes from a certain country. But there is such animosity historically between Poland and Germany and Russia and Poland that these things don't go away. I don't dislike Germans. I don't dislike Russians. But Russia's government, I don't trust. This is an important distinction. As Poland and Germany are EU friends now, wounds begin to heal. But Russia and Poland continue to antagonize each other. And it's been this way for 500 years. So to answer the post's question, without the hate, RUSSIANS.
