Off-Topic / What's your connection with Poland? Penpals. [554]

I was born and still reside in America. Several years ago I met a lovely Polish girl who was visiting, working here for the summer. She was a natural beauty and best of all she was staring at me! I immediately fell for her sweet manner and loved that she was so genuine and had not been Westernized. I was taken like never before. We enjoyed wonderful visits together for the couple of weeks I knew her.

We discussed differences and similarities between Poland and America. Knowing nothing of Poland really, I conducted some quick online research to learn about Poland so I could impress her with my new knowledge. She was flattered that I showed such interest in her homeland and culture. Score!

At the end of the summer she left and returned to Poland. We had exchanged email addresses and she insisted we keep in touch. But due to an unforeseen email problem between here and Poland, we were unable to keep in contact and we hadn’t thought to exchange other contact information. I have tried everything I could to find and contact her. With the time that has passed she has likely moved on.

I don’t even have so much as a photograph of her.
Some nights I still cruise the internet, looking at things Polish and thinking of my lost Polish girl.
One of those nights I stumbled upon this board and my first post was in a thread about the very same cursed email problem that had kept her from me. After reading around some more, the people here seemed like a friendly bunch so I’ve stuck around, hoping to gain more insight into Polish people and their wonderfully unique cultural heritage, and maybe offer them a different take on America while I’m here.

Before her I’d never given Poland a second thought. Now it holds a soft spot inside of me. Because of her I find myself interested in learning about all things Polish, their history, culture, politics and geography. So, if I ever meet up with her again I will really be able to impress her now! I have never visited Poland but I hope to someday. I’m just waiting for the email to show up in my inbox inviting me.

I know your words here are wise, Lexi. But it all has not been a total lost. The entire ordeal has served me with some valuable, if hard learned, life lessons that could be good for all to pay heed:

Exchange ALL contact information. Do not rely on one technology.
I have since purchased a small camera to keep in my car at all times to record the memories of life’s little unexpected pleasures when they arise.

Be certain to cherish what you have while you have it, for you never know when it could be fleeting even if it seems lasting.

Polish girls are yummy.
Find a reason to explore other cultures.
Hunt down and skin the guy who designed the Polish email server system.
Things of this nature.

USA, Canada / WHAT IS THE US POLONIA LIKE? [42]

While the focus of the article on Polish people paying taxes here may at first seem odd, there may be good reason for it.

What one has to understand is that Philadelphia is for the most part inhabited by lazy minorities on the public dole sucking the system. There are more tax consumers than producers there, leading to a perpetual financial problem for the city. So at every chance they attempt to put on a good face for the city in an attempt to make it more attractive to investors and to draw new tax payers. (Rarely do you see mention of the high murder rate in the city.)

I suspect the tone of the article reflects the need to be tolerant of others –foreigners- (something our bitter and lazy minorities are not known for) because they bring with them financial benefit.

In other words, the article is saying “Be nice and welcoming to the Polish since they are hard working and are paying your taxes!”

Life / Polish Organizational Skills [83]

It's almost as if they are just waiting for their leaders to give them the next instruction.

This has caused many problems in the past. Every society has them.

there is another side and many are super efficient

This is the side of Polish I have seen. Hard working, smart, efficient... sweet, soft, pretty... (weep)

I do not believe this is part of a larger effort. I suspect this may prove to be the entire effort.
Watch as in the near future Obama tries to paint this pathetic stunt showing as a good and adequate alternative to the grander missile shield program deal between Bush and Poland

Obama is an anti-military Leftist, determined to undo things his predecessors did in this area and is already making noises about becoming friendly -“reestablishing relations”- with Iran and Russia …at the expense of our friends who count on our protection…

there's advisors and people behind the face who make the decisions

Yes. But their job is to advise and decide with respect to their boss’s agenda on a matter. Different agenda, different advice and decisions. And he still gets the final say.

The missile shield was a provocative measure and is really not needed.

I thought you were for the shield, Seanus?

Like a Liberal tosses around "racist!" Lol...

However it was in the Polish interest

Indeed it was. Regardless of motives.

I suspect as a result many nations have come to rely on America to provide such things for them that they themselves could do if they wanted to undertake such an initiative. After all, why take on such expense if someone is offering to do it for you?

Often politics are a reflection of common social interaction, just on a grander, international scale.
Here, Russia and Iran are the big drunken bullies, the U.S. the cops and Poland the little guy who needs a hand defending from the louts. When if Little P took some self defense lessons, he wouldn’t need our help so much.

Where was I going with this?? I guess that’s it. Lol…

It seems to me, Sokrates, that you let your personal feelings about the U.S. influence your understanding of issues.
Like it or not, the U.S. indeed has been and remains a major influence around the globe. I don’t think there is any serious disputing of this.

You help Europeans out - They hate you.
You don't help Europeans out -They hate you.

It's cheaper to do nothing.

Yeah, for all our efforts, not a lot of appreciation gets expressed.
They love our help but hate us at the same time. Not unlike how American blacks feel about whites. Ingrates…

Well, it's in the news today that indeed Obama is going to scrap the missile shield in order to appease Russia on Iran.
The world is screwed with Commies Obama, Putin and Amadinajahd calling the shots.

Isn't he all feeble, like sick and dying? I think I could kick his midget ass.

Obama looked like a weak idiot capitulating to Russia over this. They threw it back in his face and made it public. Good. That’s what happens when an unfit amateur tries to appease enemies. But I doubt he learned his lesson.

This may be so but it is not why an anti-military, enemy-appeasing Lib like Obama has trashed the idea. Even if he economic times were good he’d be against the shield.

Real Estate / House prices in Poland to drop more or rise again? [228]

Right, there is an upside. Despite the daily doses of bad news, if someone has money, a stable job and good credit, now is a great time to buy. It is a buyers market, the likes of which may not come around again once economies recover.

Oh, I don’t know. I suspect for a time people will be more cautious with their investments and how far they extend themselves, but before long things will get back to how they were before. People –society- rarely learn their lessons.

Keep in mind, as I have often mentioned numerous times on Polish Forums, land exceeding 1 hectare has not been allowed for sale to foreigners without permission from the Polish government. That law will end in the year 2016. This pertains to private houses on such land, and small farms.

This is quite interesting. I hadn’t heard this before, not even in the thread about foreigners buying Polish properties.

It is true.

I like it. During the discussions about foreigners buying up Poland I was hoping to see some sort of government protections in place. But no one mentioned this provision.

A little protectionist nationalism is good, particularly during difficult times. A hectare is like an acre?

Thanks. That is all very interesting.
Hey, you’re the guy that’s gonna open the outdoor/ off road adventure camp, right? How were you able to buy your property if you’re not Polish? Your wife?

Agro / Eco Tourism

Cool. Like Dwight! What else? Bed & breakfast? Weddings? Corn maze? Horse riding? Hay rides? Vineyard? Haunted barn at Halloween?
If I ever get over to Poland I’ll stop by for a beer and the Saturday night barn dance!
What part of P-Land?

What a bunch of amateurs...

It was great to see that stupid gimmick blow up in her face. Lol...
"Press the reset button" was a stupid and amateurish thing for Obama to say anyway.
We have idiots running our country trying to play on the pro level. We're all doomed...

I'll give you some examples of the recent activity in my village. A Spaniard who has a Polish wife just recently purchased a large brick home here near the parish church.

You seem to know a great deal about the local transactions, Scorpio. Are you involved in local planning or tourist board? Are you and your friends trying to turn southern Poland into a rural tourist destination? Maybe this would require its own thread?

I'm not promoting this area in any "organized" way

Well, so far your have a vineyard and a ski area and your B&B&bar… (and whatever else you may have mentioned that I have forgotten). Seems to me you should all organize together and promote your little region to international tourists. Particularly now with Poland being in the EU and Western tourists heading that way.

I don't mind when tourists do visit and stay with me.

Are you presently up and running, prepared to accept guests? I mean, suppose a US tourist visiting Poland was interested in a place to stay, a base to return to while touring P-Land.
