USA, Canada / Polack/American Polonia/Plastic Pole "culture" [568]

There is a difference between a Pole and a foraigner criticizing Poland..

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you're a Pole living in America, not the descendant of a Pole living in America. And honestly, people that live here, in Poland, will complain about the things that are worth complaining about. Just like we do anywhere else that we are because believe it or not, quite a few of us aren't sheep. Why is it bad to point out things about your surroundings? Why do Poles have a monopoly on making comments about Poland?

Oh please let it rest.Seriously 90% of Poles do not give a flying phuck about this issue.I don't go any country which requires visas for Poles.I will not let anybody to harras me in order to spend my money in his country.

Good to know that. I thought it was taken as an insult? Guess I'm wrong there.

Anyway, the point that was made was that Polish-Americans were somehow instrumental in getting Poland into NATO, I asked a couple of basic questions. Like whether or not the Slovenian-American community was instrumental in them joining NATO as well, and why the oft complained about visa waiver program issue hasn't been affected by the vocal Polish-American community.

They are my people, they come from my country (or at least have Polish ancestors) and if
there's anyone entitled to insult them and hurl abuse at them - IT'S ME!

So what's your limit? A parent? A grandparent? A great grandparent? Going back to an old topic, what makes a Pole? Great grandfather was Polish and I speak Polish, visit once a year, and celebrate Polish culture vs. Polish parent, no knowledge of the language, and not really caring too much about the culture other than when they can hyphenate their ethnicity? Which one is more Polish? How about people with half Polish children, that live in Poland, and work in Poland? They should just be quiet because great great grandpa wasn't a Pole? That makes zero sense, wouldn't you agree?

Delphiandomine seems to take delight in any negativity about Poland and its people.

I don't think he's criticizing Poland and Poles as much as Polish-XXXX, whatever nationality, as overstating their connection to Poland and having more of a say in Polish politics than people that live her long term (and of course pay expensive taxes, VAT, etc). Just an observation, not necessarily one that I agree with.

Also it never hurts having a vocal Polish American community putting pressure on government officials here to help Poland when it can. The Polish American community was definitely a contributing factor for the US to have Poland in NATO. There is a NY Times article which talked about how Polonia was pressuring the Clintons and other goverment officials to have Poland in NATO. Back then there was no gaurantee Poland would be accepted in NATO.

Not so sure about that. The vocal Polish American community hasn't been able to budge the state department on the visa waiver program. I highly doubt there was much of an influence in pushing Poland into NATO. Was the Romanian-American community paramount in getting Romania into NATO? How about the mighty Slovenian-American lobby? Not buying this one.

No doubt delphiandomine started this topic in an attempt to divide and create tensions between Poles in Poland and people of Polish ancestry.

He created this thread because I didn't want to keep sending crap to random. You both obviously have things to say about it.

Also like you my ancestry is not 100% Polish, yet I have an interest in Poland and Polish people which I think is good.

Absolutely.

Who cares if a supporter of Poland in America doesn't know about some little detail here and there about Poland.......what counts is what's in his or her heart. Does he or she like Poland and is interested in Poland or not is the key. I may not agree with every single thing some Poles say here or there, but NOBODY of any group of people agree 100% all the time on everything lol

Now, the big question, do you feel qualified to make political decisions in Poland? Do you feel the need to defend Poles, or Polish-Americans? Do you think that Poland, as a nation, as a people, need defending in the US...or do you think that Polish-Americans need to be defended?

Life / The Polish Dream - move out from Poland as fast as possible [73]

I blame the americans....

Really? Americans invented greed? People have been wanting crap they couldn't afford since there first was crap people couldn't afford.

They don't have plenty of food back home, that's the problem. They want what the west has, like a varied diet, the ability to save up for a home instead of waiting for granny to die so you can get hers, buying a car so you don't have to spend an hour and half to get to work in the morning.

Greedy indeed.

I know plenty ;)

Entry level? I highly, highly, highly doubt that. Would be interested to hear about them though. That's 5k a month. I'm sure that a lot of people would like to know of an entry level job that pays 5k a month...

eh? As if SU ever sustained Poland ....

Poland is still complaining about fuel prices. Do you think if Poland had to pay market rate with a planned economy, that it would have survived for more than a year?

"Sure it was a planned economy, but it was a Polish planned economy, therefore sustainable..."

ahem.. :)

I know they helped, but please don't try and convince me that Polonia freed Poland, cause that's just a blatant lie.

You know what freed Poland? Neither the people at home, nor the ones overseas. Simple economics freed Poland. The Soviet Union not being able to sustain Poland. That's it. So, the biggest contribution to the communist government in Poland faltering would have to be the failure of planned economies.

So here's to you economics!

I think it's just the general way that they seem to think that they're Polish, but they are so completely removed from Plish life that it's not even funny. Take the whole Smolensk issue - the Polonia media was/is full of complete garbage about it - essentially regurgitated Kaczynski talk.

Is it that they're voting "conservative"?

Then there's the way that they get offended on Poland's behalf, when Poland isn't even offended. And we won't talk about the way that they get upset when they come to Poland, because it's "morally decaying" or some such nonsense.

So it's a feeling of superiority?

Seriously, why do real Poles put up with them?

Why shouldn't they? Even though it's somewhat diluted, isn't it a bit of Polish culture overseas? I for one don't mind eating "pierogies" in Oklahoma :)

News / Polish Lithuanian Diplomatic War? At last. [533]

It's from the website I have posted above, as to the actual context of the sentence, I am not quite sure what it relates to. Although whether intentional or not, and I am guessing that the context is quite secondary to the actual quote, it is a really careless thing to say for a politician.

Context means everything. Do they mean teaching in Polish? Or Polish as a second language?

“Someone that encourages a young person to study Polish is robbing him of the possibility to compete on the job market. He's shortchanging him because later on at most he may be a help on a building site.”

Do you know what the context of this sentence is? The article doesn't give much.

Poles go to the U.K. because they have a huge gherkin in the capital and like a moth to a flame, they are drawn.

Talking about the hordes of repatriated Poles currently being oppressed by the Lithuanians. Regarding the gherkin, without a decent amount of buttered bread, they're just another table ornament.

Europeans need a visa for the states and the U.S. has been unkind to Poland in this regard but it is probably more a matter of the little communist issue.

Lithuania is part of the VWP, Poland, not so much.

Theoretically, they have better opportunities to seek work overseas than their brothers with Polish passports.

It is however, all a bit ridiculous. If laws are being broken, there is a really expensive court in Strasbourg that it should be brought up in.

Do you propose to bring all those people in so they can go to Ireland or the UK
right away? That wouldn't benefit Poland and would ethnically cleanse Poles from traditionally
Polish areas on Kresy. Not the best of your ideas, Grzegorz.

But hasn't that been government policy with the whole Karta Polaka thing?

PS, wouldn't they have already gone to the UK...or the US, where they don't need visas? :)

So let's make them happy. Is Poland overpopulated ? Or is Lithuania ? Both countries are in a very difficuly demographic situation. There's few better things for Poland than bringing to Poland Polish people educated for foreign money. All Poles from ex-Soviet countries should be encouraged to do that.

In fact, isn't that government policy with the Polish ancestor card thing?

Law / The right to own guns: would you support such legislation in Poland? [2237]

If that was the truth, then America would have the lowest crime rates ever, but it seems that reality proves otherwise? Anyway, if people aren't going to use their guns because of these laws, then I really don't see why guns should be legislated in Poland.

Come on now, it depends on who has the gun...

..and this is probably why guns should be banned from society.

Because homicide rates are as low as in Poland, and yet the people still have the right to defend themselves? Seriously, if someone else were to threaten your life, you wouldn't be grateful if I were to shoot that person and therefore save your life?

I did Judo to blue belt - my fathers choice that I get some skills in this department, plus my uncle taught at the time...so from the age of 9 I was a ninja :) or not quite, but I had self-defence skills..which my brothers didnt hmmm :D

So I'll run with this. Is it ok to kill people without guns in Poland vs killing people with guns in, say, the Czech Republic? What if that stats point to the equal amount of homicides? Would you rethink your position?

Then he should have screamed back, shock tactics are proven to work.

Who knows what happened, but I'm fairly sure there were screams, crying, yelling, etc while these two were being shot and stabbed.

In all my life Ive never been in that situation, but Ive been careful where I go...I lived in a not so nice area and didnt go out after dark, where I live now I can go where ever I want when ever I want..

It's sad to have to put up with being kept in your home after dark :( . Good that you live somewhere safe now. Here in Poland, guns are difficult to get a hold of, but people still end up dead...often actually! Anyway, my Krav Maga and Muay Thai courses are going well. It's pretty popular over here, people beat the bejesus out of each other, and sometimes people die :(

Rather a beer at U Vejvodů (its almost my local) but I wont eat those pretzels, I swear they've been there for as long as Ive been going in! (the same ones!)...

Pfft, there's Zizkov, the rest of Prague...yea, pfft!

Oh pleezzze...Europeans are (or at least the English) more reserved...We dont come at people screaming..God for bid we should be so undignified whilst commiting such heinious acts, we're more sneakers than screamers...We leave dramics for the stage "darling"

In this case, was a screamer...

Because of the tooth fairy, thats a bit drastic..now do you see what I mean about gun owership? People feel they are slightly more enpowered and above the law than they should be...By the way what are you ideas on the tooth fairy?

Above the law to defend your life? Would you suggest just sitting back and seeing what the insane screaming man waving the knife and gun wanted?

Then you are just adding to the problem

Can't deny, lots of private ownership in the Czech Republic, and quite a few of us carry. In fact, next time you're in town, let me know, we can go to Kladno and "pop off a few rounds"...

That's strange all men Ive dated get more exited the closer it gets to bed time!

Personally, I enjoy emptying my clip anytime of day. But alas, it's difficult to go to sleep all worked up.

But all in all, considering the disparate laws in Europe regarding gun ownership, I don't think there is a single European perspective on the topic. At least, not yet..

Crazy guy stabs you in the back or shoots you in the back..you have no chance...or just make that "random" move as you look on and you are not expecting..you have no chance...

Yea, but he came in screaming...

I have the same argument year after year with my brothers about the tooth fairy, if they tell me one more time it was my parents putting cash under my pillow I may just try and get a gun!

I would shoot you in Prague if you threatened me or anyone around you, as would plenty of Czechs.

5% too many if you ask me, but I did note that there are a lot of Americans living in CZ these days..are they counted if they are classed as citizens..Im not accusing, just asking?

Not many Americans own guns in CZ, I don't know of any that do, and I know a bunch of 'mericans.

Why? Ive been visiting for over 10 years and never felt threatened but I might now knowing you're walking about armed!

There are lots of us walking around armed, seriously, I'm not making this up!

Nah...You know that your hardon will wilt if we do :D

ah, wilt, wilt, wilt... It's getting close to bedtime..

did you know that the amendment was added after the Shays rebellion, to strengthen the militia agains the citizens' revolts? Funny how the things work out..
The idea was for the people to select individuals, hopefully sane ones, to carry arms to protect the rest of us.

That runs contrary to what people like Patrick Henry, John Adams, Jefferson, etc wrote about long before Shays Rebellion.

Nonetheless, it's there, and we like 'em in the US.

Probably ain't going to happen over here. We'll see how the attitude changes as things slip further...

Should we fix something that isn't broken? I mean, look at the number of shooting incidents in Poland, and then compare the number of such incidents to what's going down in America on a daily basis. And of course I'm talking percentual here.

Are you looking at the last year, the last 20, or the last 100? Some interesting things went on in the 40s, one side had all the guns, and the other side was getting shot.

Sorry, you didn't get it man :-)

it has to do with the availability of guns, no more and no less.

Guns are available to US citizens as a check to government power. That's not an interpretation, that's why it's in there.

John Adams, "Arms in the hands of the citizens may be used at individual discretion for the defense of the country, the overthrow of tyranny or private self-defense."

Thomas Jefferson, "The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government."

So guns will stay, most Americans agree on that.

Now the big question is, what drives those firearm deaths? Why are New Zealanders twice as safe as the French with the same number of households with weapons (from the chart)?

If violent crime keeps rising in Poland, do you think that there will be a bigger push to loosen up gun laws?

... they are scared. The NRA campagns have them completely brainwashed.

Don't know, Katrina and what's going on along the border make a pretty good case that the government can't adequately protect it's citizens. Crime is still on the rise even though the number of guns in the US is fairly stagnant. That would point to the police not being able to do their job for whatever reason. Those exact same people that you're trusting to provide you with the last line of defense to protect you and your loved ones. Would be interesting to hear from older Poles (WW2 survivors) and hear what their opinions are.

That's true, that's what they're for. But that's not what the debate is about. Most Americans support gun ownership because at the end of the day, they don't trust their government to defend them...neither against people or ahem, the agents of the government itself.

Funny how they had the foresight to head off future gun-grabbing. See, even they knew that the first thing tyrants do is seize the weapons of the people so they are rendered defenseless. How come those old guys in powdered wigs and funny hats so long ago could see this but Libs today can't?

But, the only problem is....in Poland, that right is not enshrined in the constitution :(

From what I remember, you can eventually get a permission for a handgun to protect your house, yet, by the law, it has to be locked safely at all times, unloaded. The police, before shooting at the criminal, have to shout a shooting warning (Policja, uwaga, strzelam!) three times, then shoot in the air, then aim at the legs.

A handgun to protect your house is almost unheard of.

Regarding the Police, they can shoot when they feel threatened.

Might genetics have a cause on the troubles caused by guns? After all genetics undoubtedly affects education, income, and IQ to a certain extent...

Now show us the same stats for Russia. Genetics has less of a role than society.

I'm still under the impression that Poland should take the Swiss approach.

Well this is good. At least peeps can be exposed to guns to some degree and see they're not as scary as they've been made out to be. :s

But...not many people are interested in them. Poles really don't seem to care much for guns.

To remove some of the stigma and fear and promote safety... to remove some of the mystery so a kid finding a gun isn't so intrigued by it...

Absolutely. Needed in the US, wouldn't make much sense in Poland.

Are there different laws regulating sidearms and long guns? Are the two differentiated like they are here or are all "guns" just lumped together?

They're categorized separately. The laws here are very restrictive when it comes to personal ownership. On the other hand, there are shooting ranges where you can rent pistols and rifles :)

Strange.
