News / Poland's aid to Ukraine if Russia invades - part 25 [1150]

@Grabi

There is some truth in that but still personal freedom (also freedom of expression) is incomparably higher in Europe, and people whom the governments don't like are still not flying out of windows (a subtle difference, yes, but a difference nonetheless).

You forgot their contributions to amateur **** and the shoes they invented made of tree bark

You guys are so annoying, it's unbelievable. Continue in such vein and I will feel tempted to join Novichok's one-person camp. 0_0

against a far smaller and poorer enemy

Smaller but still the size of France, patriotic and determined to defend their country. Poorer but flooded with money, weapons, ammunition, intelligence data and many other resources by most of the Western world.

Plans for everything Ruskies have build have been stolen by KGB from the west.

Did you even read my post? How could they have stolen something that other countries don't have and never had, genius?

Russians may have inferior social/government system but apart from that they are the most intelligent and most resourceful Slavic people.

Ruskies are incapable of inventing anything

If you really insist on being a retard...

due to racial limitations

... then at least don't be a racist retard on top of that.

How many countries operate nuclear ice-breakers? Or how many countries provide space taxi services for Americans, when they aren't able to transport their crews themselves?

The first space station was Russian (that implies they didn't copy it from anyone else, doesn't it?). Russian rocket engines were so efficient and reliable that the U.S. bought and used them for Atlas V rockets for decades; Russian floating nuclear power plant (Akademik Lomonosov) is the world's first operational one, deployed in the Arctic. They have fast breeder reactors in operation (BN-600, BN-800). What else? Buran space shuttle with fully automated orbital flight and landing on its maiden voyage is something NASA never achieved. Many Nobel Prizes, including the discovery of superconductivity in certain compounds, excellent results - almost the best in the world - in international Mathematics and Physics olympiads. I could go on but it's ultimately pointless, because - as Mark Twain once said - "no amount of evidence will ever persuade an idiot" (how true!).

Both are capitalist

That is absolutely correct, Grabi. However, in Europe capitalism developed gradually since Middle Ages and it is backed up by those silly European ideas of human rights, individual freedom, rule of law, property laws, independent media and legal institutions - you know, small things like that.

In Russia, on the other hand, it is more like Wild West (or Wild East rather) capitalism, with weaker civil society, oligarchs dominating key sectors, people falling out of windows, most media subordinated to state, and lack of real accountability of the government to voters.

Technically, yes - they are both capitalist. It's like a chair and an electric chair - they are both chairs, but the differences are not trivial.

What is happening - Poles?

Same old, same old.

What are you worried about today?

The coming war with Russia, inflation, the state of Polish football, floods in Pakistan and India, landslides in Sudan, war in Gaza - you name it, we worry about it. This is our national sport. :)

How can I make you feel more comfortable?

Just be your good old self, Bobykul. *high five*

They for sure can see the advances in wealth and freedom made by their Romanian cousins

Well, the European model is certainly more appealing to ordinary people than the Russian one, that's true. However, seeing how the support of the EU for KO helped them achieve their electoral success in Poland, I dare to suspect that there was some involvment (not a direct one, of course) in the Moldovan elections as well.

Nothing bad in that, mind you. The last thing we want is another putinist Trojan horse behind our lines. Hungary and Slovakia are more than enough.

They were deprived of voting - what kind of legitimate elections can we even talk about?

I think that's how it should be also with elections in Poland - if someone lives abroad permanently and pays taxes there, why should he vote in Polish elections? The same applies to Moldova.

As for their elections, both Russia and the EU meddled in them. The EU turned out to be better at meddling.

There are five or six other politicians who should fall out of a window but I shall not name them or the site will have a "server malfunction" again and all posts made around that time will be lost. xD

No one's buying your spiel.

What do you mean 'spiel'? Bobko is as honest as it gets: he supports Putin and his war in Ukraine and never made a secret out of it, he is a Russian imperialist and never made a secret out of it. You can dislike him or disagree with him, but accuse him of dishonesty you cannot.

maybe torq is

I'm not buying anything, Maf. Do I like the guy? Sure. Sue me.

Anyone want to start a pool on how long before Ilan Shor falls out of a window?

He should fall out of a window. You make business with gangsters, you end up accordingly.

Life / If you lived abroad, would you like to have a Pole as a neighbor? [93]

you are coming across as a peasant

Polish peasants are very decent people - salt of this earth and good Catholics, not falling for either communist or nazi nonsense. It is by and large thanks to them that Poland emerged from nazi occupation and then communist rule as a still Christian country.

I can't imagine that they just smile and hold the other cheek

I can't see it either. The mutual relations would definitely deteriorate even further.

But it is not Germany who should worry too much. This time it is Russia who started the war, and it is behind Russia that the stink of this war will drag for decades.

are these fears und grudges against Germans or Nazis?

Hmm... a difficult question. Did the German women who were raped by Russian soldiers had later fears and grudges against Russians or Communists?

it's abit puzzling

Not that much. If Russia can still exploit old fears and grudges in their propaganda, they will do it. All dirty tricks are used in a war.

Torqi, do Poles feel they want to be be saved by Russia from big bad Germany?

No, but it is still possible to persuade them (especially the older generation) that Germany has evil intentions. Do you remember when Kaczyński expressed opposition to Germany stationing Patriot systems in Poland, and it was only after much debate that the PiS government changed course? 80 years after the war, and Kaczyński still tried to exploit the opposition to the presence of German troops in Poland, even when you only tried to help! Never underestimate old grudges and old fears, BB.

Germany trying to overtake Europe again like the Nazis

It is still possible to scare people with Germany in Poland. 80 years after the war, after 21 years in the EU, after millions upon millions of Poles have lived, studied and worked in Germany - it is still possible (Kaczyński built his entire political career on this scaremongering). So why are you surprised it is also possible in Russia?

Someone wise once said that one of the first victims of any war is the truth. During war all dirty propaganda tricks will always be used.

The USSR

Hey, you won't hear me complaining about the USSR. Sure, Lwów and Wilno were Polish cultural centres but the areas around them were infested with banderites and samogitians. Untenable in the long run. We got Szczecin, Wrocław and Gdańsk in return--a brilliant deal! Improving our borders in the West was one in a 1000 years chance and thanks to dyadya Stalin we took it. If I was offered the same deal today I would take it again... and again, and again.

As much as many people will hate to admit, Poland after the war, with borders shifted West and ethnically uniform, was better than the one before. Ravaged by war, decimated and deeply hurt, but still better.

they could be ukrainians or bolsheviks in the east of old poland

...or Belarussians or yet another minority notorious for welcoming the Soviets with flowers and having many communists among them (I shall not name this minority for fear of being called an anti-semite).

I doubt many Poles were waving at Red Army mere 19 years after the Polish-Soviet war.

You mean full of Russophiles. Either genuine (like you or me) or in denial (like Maf or Cms).

Probably you are lying. The only ham they have in Russia is hedgehog ham (Chinese hedgehog). ;)

Thanks for the info, Grabi.

But your city does have AA defense traditions (or at least used to have some time ago)... or am I confusing something as usual?

One way or another, if you are ever in Klin and have to go to the dentist, and the guy drilling your tooth is named Yuri - tell him Torq sends his best wishes. :)

We had Nathan and I was beastly to him at first. *red face* But then we got on rather well.

Is it because the history with Poland?

I don't think so. It's one of the mysteries of the universe - with two million Ukrainians in Poland, not a single one joined PF. :(

Stick around, Grabbi. You will find out with time (a lot of time) that we are not as bad as we seem at first. :)

The only thing that matters is what he posts.

Don't be so ridiculous, Ryszard. This is PF. Everything matters and people are treated in a horrible way all the time. If they survive it, they become PFers - a part of the family no matter what.

@Grabber

Apart from being paranoid we are also very nosy and prying, so don't be surprised if we eventually find out who you are in the real life. Happens all the time here. I know who some posters are because they told me, but about one of them I was so curious that I had to find out myself without his knowledge. I am a discreet person though, so don't worry. ;)

He doesn't need background check

you can't be so suspicious

We are all very suspicious here - like a cross between Agent Stirlitz and Sherlock Holmes on too much coffee. The history of this board and its users made us so.

I am willing to give you the benefit of the doubt. The truth always comes out in the end anyway.

You will never convince your enemies and you don't have to convince your friends.

Better an honest enemy than a false friend.

Russian or not

Hm... I'd say there's 60% chance he's real Russian (my questions were difficult) and only 40% agent provocateur.

In any case, it would be nice to have more of both Russian and Ukrainian posters on PF, so that we could always hear both sides of the story.
