News / Throwing away the constitution in Poland? [626]

look at the fall in exchange rates,

Markets were not affected by PiS winning the election but by the hysterical hullabaloo unleashed by the opposition as if the world was about to end. Well, to some extent that was true. The cushy, fatcat kickbacks and privileges of the foreign-capital-serving agents of influence were about to end, and they could not allow that to happen. Hence the no-holds-barred propaganda barrage and high-powered rabble-rousing. It's as simplel as that. The high-soudning slogans -- freedom, democracy, preventing totalitarianims, stopping fascism, threats to the TK and constitution -- were all window-dressing designed to deceive the masses.

Christmas customs

Nobel Prize winner's Christmas glimpses
Wigilia peasant style

Christmas, the commemoration of Jesus' humble birth in a stable some two millennia ago, is experienced at many different levels. It is a religious experience, permeated by national and family traditions. The classic literary depiction of the Old Country Christmas of our Polish immigrant ancestors was created by self-taught Polish author Właydysław Reymont who won the 1924 Nobel Literary Prize for his novel "Chłopi" ("The Peasants").

on the extremely important matters

It is ludicrous for 5 people to conclusively rule on matters of vital state importance. Even the current law states that the full panel is required to rule on issues of great significance. So the recent TK rulings were invalid for that very reason.

sight of actual money makes quite a difference

You must have some unknown Polish genes -- that's how it was during the commie years. The restaurant or hotel was all full up, but flash a zielony załącznik (green in$ert -- in a pinch a wad of PRL-era play money) and suddenly all doors opened up. "No loo paper, what a shame, and here I was hoping...." and presto the shop assistant shot back with: "How many rolls did you say you need?"

a new christmasy

Lamb in Poland is priced way out of the reach of the average Pole who wouldn't know what to do with it in the first place. But the marketplace now offers a wide range of products from all round the globe. Compared to average earnings many are priced sky-high.

they've actually

The whole Petrtu/PO/Michnik camp have been saying democracy is in danger, the constitution is threatened, we're on the road to totalitarianuism, fascism is coming, etc,. etc, ad nauseum. The shysters dont' give a flying f*ck for the high-soundingn slogans but know they could never get much of a following if they laid their true cards on the table: WE ARE LACKEYS OF WESTERN BANKS AND CORPORATIONS AND OUR PERKS AND KICKBACKS ARE IN DANGER IF PiS COME TO POWER AND START EXPOSING OUR MACHINATIONS.

hapless victims of smooth talking shysters

Indeed, you've hit the nail on the head. I am not demonising the bulk of the oppostion marchers as evil, only misguided having succumbed to teh shysters' extremely persuasive propaganda. It is a tiny minority (3-4%) of pro-corporate lobbyists and supportive elite that stand to lose their cushy posts and positions of influence. But they avoid mentioning that argument and instead try to pull the wool over the public's eyes with such slogans as freedom. dermocracy, constitution, TK, etc. The vast majrotiy of grass-roots demonstrators sincerely believe they are marching for democracy not to benefit some powerful pro-corporate elite!

sincerly think that PiS is not the best option

...As a result of the most vicious propaganda barrage (think Michnik, Petru, Kopacz, et al) in recent memory. No-one is saying repetitive high-powered propaganda doesn't work. (Think Goebbels' big lie repeated 100 times!)

are very

Only goes to show that the pro-corporate fanatics have achieved propaganda skills comparable only to those of Hitler and Stalin. To convince masses of people that democracy is in danger when only their cushy pro-corporate lobbyist posts are threatened is no mean accomplishment.

Nowoczesna won huge popularity

Indeed, PO now have a worthy successor. Nowoczesna have won huge popularity through glib, slick and cleverly phrased demagoguery designed to dupe the masses, delivered by a handsome, charismatic rabble-rouser. And it has worked so far. But like PO, the bankster Petru gang are but another pro-corporate lobby on the payroll of foreign business interests.

Before open street clashes erupt which Delph says he looks forward to, he can amuse himself by dreaming up and toying wtih different theories like this one. That Delph's a real sicko!

EU army

First they'll have to create one. But they could always call in NATO forces to overthrow the democratcially elected Polish government.
To blokes like Delph it's only a game. He missed martial law so this could provide a little excitement to watch from the sidelines. Disgusting!

I hope for the army on the streets

Only a crazed poltical fanatic hoping his side win at all costs to the nation and country could advocate a situation that could well lead to armed conflict and a bloodbath. You are sick in your zoological hatred towards PiS. As much as I dislike and distrust them, I would say let the Tusks and Petrus keep serving their foreign corporate masters at Poland's expense if that could avert a physical confrontation of unknown consequences.

with the TK mess

... conceived and stage-directed by PO. It appears to have been a deliberate trap designed to unleash confusion, chaos and unrest which would harm the new government even before they won the election. PO knew they could count on vicious smear tactics from the Michnikite synagogue and that would get picked up and widely publicised by the Western leftstream media.

The bottom line is the prevailing thesis that Poland must be ruled only by a pro-corporate political formation (KDL, UD, UW; PO, Nowoczesna). All the pro-democracy rhetoric is but a smoke-screen because if pro-corporate forces are ever threatend, even the voters' veridct can be undermined and overturned by hook or by crook!

sensitivity

Both sensitivity and firm resolve were reflected in PM Szydło's address to the nation on Tuesday evening, and she poitned out things I have felt right along.

"In oru culture it is accepted that a new governmetn gets 100 days to impelment its first mesasures. We were not given that time. PO proved incapable of rising above (party) divisiosn," Szyadło said. "Today thse shoting the loudest are in actualtiy defending onyl theri own itnerests. PO wanted the make TK their interests' last bastion of defence, They wanted to stop the 'Family 500' proejct, lowering retirement age and taxation of banks and hypermarkets. For the interest groups that enrichedd themselves at the expense of Poles recent years have indeed been a golden age, but it has come to and end." The PM added Christmas was coming and should be a time of reconcilitoan and forgiveness."

split down the middle at the minute.

Do you think it's good to maintain or even deepen polarisaiton? It's been going on since PO went bonkers after losing in 2005 and deepened over Smolensk 5 years later. Shouldn't attempts be made to seek compromise and broaden national? In actuality both sides have dug into their trenches and are unwilling to budge. That never bodes well for national accord. That is usually the prelude to war.

Nowoczesna - 24%

Petru has all the makings of an effective demagogue. Strong, dynamic, well versed in rabble-rousing rhetoric that appeals to the masses and is even handsome for the ladies. All those are vote-getting attributes which does not necessarily mean it's what's best for the nation.

Jarek and his ilk

The problem is that PiS is a "partia wodzowska" (leader-centred party). So was PO under Tusk. When he left, Kopacz tried but failed to become someone to rally around and keep sympathisers within the Platformer fold.

on small entrepreneurs

For starters but the long-range goal should be the creation of large, viable Polish corporations. Maybe in some cases mixed public-private companies could be developed combining treasury and private capital. Are there any such mixed companies at present?

against a bunch of political opportunists that want to use Poland to line their own pockets.

I could agree with you if you had said: one bunch of political opportunists who want to use Poland to line their own pockets are opposed to another bunch of political opportunists who want to use Poland to line their own pockets.

But you are spouting a naive fairy tale which you yourself don't believe: Petru is a selfless, dedicated knight in shining armour with no ties to banksters or corporate forces who is opposing a band of PiS opportunists.

All PiS have to do

FYI -- A VOICE FROM ACROSS THE ATLANTIC (of a PolAm political science professor):

From afar, I think Walesa is wrong in calling for a referendum to out PiS.
Poland has a democratic system of governance. PiS won the presidency and the parliament - fair and square.
Moreover there is no constitutional rationale for nullifying the elections of 2015.
The positions of Duda and Szydlo may be at the heart of this issue.
They - and not Kaczynski - are the elected leaders of the country. They should act as leaders and not appear as if they are puppets of Kaczynski.

Just maybe it is time for Kaczynski to go?
Walesa, Jaruzelski, Mazowiecki, etc., etc, - are all real or political goners. 1989, 1981, 1980, 1976, 1968, 1956, 1947, 1939, 1926, 1918 - it's history.
IMPORTANT HISTORY but still history. Let the new generation govern. In the best interests of the Polish people.
