News / Polish President Lech Kaczynski and gov officials die in a plane crash in Russia [686]

and the fact that there was no love lost between the current Polish government and the Kaczynskis, maybe there is a human element where some in the current Polish government may not be as aggressive as they should be in tracking down all the leads in this investigation?

That's the last thing they'd want to be remembered for. My own feeling is that they'd upset the Russians if they had to, but there simply isn't any mystery - it was just an accident.

History / Roman Dmowski-Patriot, Nationalist, Anti-Semite? [251]

who should and shouldn't belong to it, i think they meant ethnic Poles, Slavs, descendants of the tribes who inhabited that land when it was formed.

Centuries before, Europe having irrevocably changed in the intervening years. Though when "the land was formed" it was a pretty mixed territory too.

yet they were half of all doctors, lawyers, business owners

Good for them. What should a talented, intelligent landless people do? Depend on the 'good will' of others?

they'd lower the prices so much that u'd go bankrupt in a month or so, it did happen

And still does. Sharp though it is, it's still normal business practice. I've seen it happen in Warsaw - Poles doing it to Poles. It isn't a particulary Jewish thing.

in their own country

The "own country" of anyone who lived there - when the Second Republic's borders appeared there was nobody still alive who remembered Polish independence.

Poles in their own country and can't get to the top because some other ethnicity wont let them, blocks all their their attempts, does that sound right to you??

No, given that the institutions of the state, all ministries and universities, the Church, the police and both branches of the armed forces were run by non-Jewish Poles.

His "counterbalance" therefore, involved advancing his own ethnic group at the expense of another, sharing the same territory. I prefer Pildsudski's inclusive approach. Nevertheless, he has his followers, even today!

the element of protectionism which he introduced.

Which he proposed introducing, without success. Given the parlous economic state of Poland during his lifetime, some degree of protectionism sounds seductively appealing - but on the grounds of race or religion? No.

Jews ..... keep all the business for themselves

Do you know any single person or group of people who give businesses away?

keeping Poles as little more than their serfs,

Or customers?

He was referring to their modus operandi and wasn't stabbing at ethnicity too much.

He believed in a monoracial state. Fortunately, Marszal Pilsudzki didn't, and in any case Dmowski's bunch were never in office during his lifetime.

cheating that many Jewish business folk were engaged in at the time, I'm hardly surprised that he wanted to carve out a Polishness which meant protecting themselves against being exploited

Hard to imagine that you believe that.

Check out some of the things Dmowski wrote - nastiness drips off the pages.

Life / Polish authors, books & literature. [95]

Set reading - my son is horrified by this book. Come back Giertych, the only Education Minister with sense in post 1990 Poland!

One of the great classics of Polish literature, and one of the few Polish books to be known arount the world! A great read.

Surely you're being tongue in chhek about that ape Giertych!

Life / I saw Polish nationalism today [249]

they are not neonazis. They are ultra-nationalists. The Dmowski ideology heritors

The two are not mutually incompatible. I suspect that for the baying jackbooted skinheads, National Socialism holds as much, if not more, appeal than the philosophy and ideas of Roman Dmowski.

No buts, and the location and nationality of the person who uses a phrase is irrelevant - especially when it's in a foreign language - which for Poles and Poland, English certainly is.

You called it a "Polish Concentration Camp", which I personally wouldn't - but there you go - you've just confirmed that you agree with the truth of Harry's various posts on that issue.

I was expecting it to be Bereza Kartuszka, troll. Interesting you describe it as a concentration camp. Would you go so far as to call it a Polish Concentration Camp?

(he asks as the trap shuts with a big clang)

I know that and I hope you didn't think that I thought they were a popular movement.

Not at all. Your comments echoed those of a friend who moved to Poland during the 'ducks' regime', when they were trying to ban everything. He's feeling a bit more settled now, but stuff like today's march (on the news round the world) does nothing for Poland's image and doesn't bring many badly needed tourist Euros!

watching the news this evening has made me regret moving here.

These nuts come, get arrested, then go - and the rest of us get on with enjoying life. The numpty-nazis aren't representative of Poland and her centuries-old liberal tradition. They just do what they do to attract attention, which ultimately they don't get.

Leftists call everyone nazis, fascists, racists, and antisemites

So what would you call an angry crowd of skinheads with jackboots and uniforms waving home-made flags and shouting "Zydzi won" and "Zakaz pedalowanie" in the streets? Peace protesters?

Boots and uniforms,

You on cracks?

Both boots and uniforms were very much out in force.

Agreed. Boots and uniforms, dodgy flags and hate-filled slogans have no place marching through town on such a day. Seeing these (invariably ugly and pasty-faced) neo-nazis makes it easy to forget that true patriotism should be a positive thing.

History / Poland is great Mother of all Slavs from Baltic to Balkan [177]

If so, aren't you speaking above for them, including, ahem, myself?

No.

Have you?

... So that's what you meant when you stated: "Most people in Poland have probably met few if any Poles"?
:)

"Most", is not "we". A very, very different animal.
